Book Synopsis Self-management and the Crisis of Socialism by : Michael Wayne Howard
Download or read book Self-management and the Crisis of Socialism written by Michael Wayne Howard and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2000 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While some conclude from the revolutions of 1989 that socialism is dead, interest in socialism continues because of persisting problems of contemporary capitalism. In this exciting text, Michael W. Howard offers critiques of liberal, communitarian, postmodern and some Marxist perspectives in order to develop a 'left-liberal' defense of a model of self-managed market socialism that includes a basic income for all. Specific applications of his view include analyses of its implications for the global marketplace, the changing nature of workplaces, and media restructuring and ownership. This work is sure to be of interest to social scientists, public policy makers, and economists as well as to feminists, ecologists, and others concerned with how market socialism is relevant to their social issues.

Book Synopsis Workers Control and Socialist Democracy by : Carmen Sirianni
Download or read book Workers Control and Socialist Democracy written by Carmen Sirianni and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent scholarship has rediscovered the genuinely mass character of the Bolshevik-led revolution that toppled Russian absolutism in 1917. In this major study, Carmen Sirianni undertakes a comprehensive study of the forms of popular power that emerged in the course of the struggle against Tsarist, and their destiny in the formative years of the new Soviet state. He successively discusses the factory committee movement, the attitudes of the trade unions and the left parties towards workers control, the unfolding of dual power, the tole of the peasantry, and the organization of labour and industry in the civil war. The developing theme of these chapters - the unsettled, often antagonistic relationship between working-class and peasant initiatives and demands and Bolshevik political and economic conceptions - is subjected to theoretical examination in the second part of the book. Here Sirianni analyses the particular constitution of Lenin's Marxism, and discerns in it a 'productivist evolutionism' which, he maintains, adversely affected the Bolsheviks' appreciation of working-class self-organization both in industry and in the exercise of political power, and vitiated their perception of the rural masses. Finally, Sirianni sets Russian policy and experience in its international context, considering the different, but also limited, views of Gramsci and Pannekoek, and the 'councilist' movements of Western Europe. He concludes with a reflection on the subsequent course of the revolutionary state and the options available to its leaders, as the defeat of the Left Opposition and then of Bukharin prepared the triumph of Stalinism. Workers Control and Socialist Democracy unites historical, political and theoretical judgement to make a fundamental contribution to our understanding, both of the Russian Revolution and of central unresolved issues of socialism in the twentieth century.
Book Synopsis Yugoslavia in Turmoil by : James Simmie
Download or read book Yugoslavia in Turmoil written by James Simmie and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 1991 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the context of civil war the economic structure of Yugoslavia is being tenuously held together. Having the legacy of neither a free-market nor strictly socialist economy, the experience of Yugoslavia is unique amongst East European countries. This book draws out the important experience of a self-managed market-socialist type economy and asks the question of whether or not this point of departure will secure an advantageous position for the country. The contributors to this volume analyse the theory of self-management and how it operated in practice. They conclude that this approach did not bring the anticipated benefits, and that inequality not only persisted but actually increased under self-management. The economic situation has therefore been a driving force for political reform. In the concluding section, the editors draw out the lessons that emerge from the Yugoslavian experience for other East European political economies now in the complex process of transformation to market-style economies.

This Reader traces the development self-government as a worldwide phenomenon and dealing with all This Reader traces the development of self-government from its beginnings as an apparently utopian idea of a handful of visionaries a century and a half ago to its implementation on a national scale in the contemporary world. All fundamental aspects of this development are dealt with--historical, philosophical, sociological, political, and economic. Contributions from some twenty countries are included. Several synthetic papers have been written especially for this book; because of their inclusion, as well as the comprehensiveness of the book's coverage, this work transcends the usual confines of a reader. The edtiors' goal was to assemble all important contributions of historical and theoretical value in one book.
Book Synopsis Socialism After Communism by : Christopher Pierson
Download or read book Socialism After Communism written by Christopher Pierson and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christopher Pierson assesses the evidence of terminal decline, but finds rather a whole series of deep-seated challenges to traditional forms of socialist and social democratic thinking. Above all, these problems are to be found in the political economy of social democracy and its commitment to incremental change in the context of an increasingly globalized market economy. The latter chapters of the book are devoted to an assessment of market socialism, one of the most vigorous and innovative attempts to seek to recast socialist aspirations under these quite changed circumstances. In essence, market socialism represents an attempt to reconcile new forms of social ownership with the seeming ubiquity of the market. Having outlined this position, Pierson carefully and systematically critiques it and, in the process, develops a set of distinctive arguments about the nature of social ownership, the potential of the labor-managed economy, and the appropriate forms for an extension of economic democracy.

Book Synopsis Law, Socialism and Democracy by : Paul,Q,Hirst
Download or read book Law, Socialism and Democracy written by Paul,Q,Hirst and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the political and legal institutions necessary for a democratic socialism in advanced industrial societies. It argues that a democratic socialist society needs a firm framework of public law, and a formal constitution. Populist conceptions of direct democracy and informal justice are argued to be inadequate as the primary means of democratic control in a complex society; likewise Marxist views of the "withering away of the state" are challenged as utopian. The book maintains that radical reforms in political institutions are necessary in order to effect social change.
