If he is content, he must either be blind or live far remote from our main centres of population. Let him visit the nearest industrial city and then defend, if he can, the system which brings such places into existence. Our industrial cities produce the wealth which is necessary to modern civilization; and what sinks of misery they are! Everyone detests them, except perhaps the capitalists who grow rich there. What English family would choose to live in Sheffield or Wolverhampton, still less in that full-blown growth of competitive commercialism, the East End of London? The material evils of our system are gross and palpable, and have made us a byword of reproach throughout the world. But corresponding to them there is also a spiritual mischief, which is even more deplorable to a thoughtful mind; a low morality, which is not confined to the poor people who live in the slums but spreads corruptingly through every rank and class of the community. I have tried to be both concrete and constructive, believing that the best way to expel anti-social tendencies in thought and action is to instil pro-social ideas and give the reasons for pro-social conduct. As Comte said, Nothing is destroyed until it is replaced and the Vandals are out in such numbers, and their blows fall with such vigour on the fabric Of conventional morality, that some replacement does indeed require to be done. Those who read these papers as they appeared week by week in justice will perhaps notice that the Chapter on the drink question has been omitted, as well as the portion of the second chapter leading up to it. This has been done, not because Of any material change Of opinion on the question, but because such a topic was apart from the constructive aim and character Of the book. L. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Socialism in the United States Since the first appearance of this book (October, 1903), four editions of it have been printed without any change in the text. But now, when my publishers are about to send it out into the world for the fifth time, I feel that the task of subjecting it to a thorough revision can no longer be delayed. There are several reasons why such revision should be undertaken at this time. The last six years have been years of uncommon interest and eventfulness for the socialist movement of this country, and no history of the movement can claim to be complete without at least a brief record of these events. The task of bringing the narrative down to date has made necessary the addition of an entirely new and somewhat extended chapter. An attempt has also been made in this edition to analyze the character of the American socialist movement and to forecast its probable future. When the "History of Socialism in the United States" was first written, socialism was only beginning to gain a foothold in this country, and the organized socialist movement was barely in its formative stage. The Socialist Party, which, to-day represents the bulk of all organized socialist activities in the United States, was only two years old. Its following was small, and its policy was somewhat unsettled. During the last six years, the party has almost doubled the number of its voters and trebled its enrolled membership. It has largely extended and perfected its organization, and has evolved more fixt and efficient methods of action. Since its organization in 1901, the Socialist Party has held three conventions and has passed through two national political campaigns. Its mission and place in the politics of the country have become more definitely settled. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialists and Socialism F you've nothing else to do and are at all interested in the subject, suppose you come along with me, and have a look at the Howling Dervishes. It takes all sorts of folks to make a world, you know, and the Howling Dervish is a time-honored institution. He has enormous faith in himself, and no amount of the opposition literature could exterminate him. He's a fix ture, the Howling D. Is, and we must reconcile ourselves to him, as we do to other inevitable and unescapable actualities. The most amusing thing about the modern H. Dervish is, that he considers himself something new under the sun. He isn't. Plato dreamed of him; ancient Sparta knew him well: each savage tribe had to shake him off and even the American colonies experimented with him. In their young and silly days. But the Socialists of our time bitterly deny the possession of a historic lineage, and wildly claim originality as they bowl and whirl. If you have no decided preference as to what part of the Socialist capon shall be put on your plate, I'll begin with young Robert Hunter. Young Robert is the Socialist leader who worked a get-rich-quick scheme by marrying a millionaire's daughter, - after which he published a book on Poverty, and began to wear pink socks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Socialism The report is on a crop of bushels, and the commissioner divides the total data by giving the cost for 20 bushels. Human labor 2 hours, 58 minutes (call it 3 hours). Animal labor (an item that we shall later see will soon be eliminated), 8 hours. Twenty bushels for three hours' labor. Add 1-3 that it may more nearly conform with our definition of labor cost, and we have 20 bushels for four hours, or our assumed Socialist day. How many bushels can you now get for a 10-hour day? And mark this, that this report includes every item of labor from the time men go forth to plow the ground until the wheat is sacked and stored in the granary. But men do not go to this work with a single plow, a pair of bob-tailed mules and chain harness - do not go forth to wear them selves out plodding all, day to turn over about one and one-half acres. They go with steam plows and steam threshers; they do the work as it should be done. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How I Became a Socialist: And Other Papers The pamphlets included in this volume were published at various times during the last four years, 1908-1912, while conducting Socialist propaganda in England and the United States. They were never intended as a connected whole. Some of them were delivered on special occasions, as for instance the "Bible Argument for Socialism," to the Methodist preachers of San Francisco. "How I Became a Socialist" was first printed, red hot, off my tongue, in a little paper published for campaign purposes in England. Before the last copies are exhausted, I have had three hundred sets bound for those who wish to preserve them. A new type of propaganda material will appear as the social revolution proceeds. This has had its place, and such of it as may yet prove useful may be reprinted. I count myself happy to have spoken or written anything, to have had any part however small, in this great hour of human trial and triumph. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plain Examination of Socialism In Book I., I state certain fundamental facts of human nature, as well as certain economic principles which I believe to have the character of immutable natural laws. In Book II. Is given a brief description of the present system of human society with respect to its economic dealings; the socialistic attack on this present system, the weakness of the objections thereto, and the insuperable difficulties of remedying them. In Book III we step into the socialists' camp, take up their general proposals, examine them in detail, and show what, if anything, they must lead to. I have endeavoured to treat the subject strictly from an economic standpoint, believing that socialism in any form can only be combated successfully by presenting valid economic arguments against it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism for Students This little work consists of a series of articles reprinted from the columns of "The International Socialist Review," and written in answer to the request of its editor for a study course in Socialism. The aim of the author is to indicate in briefest outline some of the more salient points in the Socialist philosophy, so as to give the reader an inkling into the nature of the modern Socialist movement. At best this treatise can serve only as a framework. The much more important task of rearing the structure remains for the student. It is hoped that the course of reading, suggested in the appendix, will be found of service in this respect. So far as possible the author has followed the beaten path of Socialist thought and purposely tried to avoid phases of the question over which there is serious dispute. Where anything new is offered, of course he alone is responsible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Socialism We all know that the propaganda of socialism has been attended with intemperate and violent language with wild opinions which are often inconsistent with the first principles of social order, with revolutionary outbreaks leading to bloodshed, desolation and long-con tinned unrest and suspicion. These things are greatly to be deplored. But we shall be wise if we regard them as symptoms of wide-spread and deep-seated social disease. The best way to cure such disease is to study and remove the causes of it. No physician will have any success in combating a malady if he content him self with suppressing its symptoms. For the study of socialism two things are essential on the part of the reader - good-will and the Open mind. Socialism has at least a most powerful pro visional claim on our good-will, that it professes to represent the cause of the sufferers in the world's long agony, of the working-classes, of women, and of the down-trodden nations and races. If it can make any solid contribution in such a far-reaching cause it has the strongest right to be heard. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Strength and Weakness of Socialism The United States has now the opportunity which Germany had twenty years ago. It is not by any means too late for us to escape the situation in which Germany finds herself. However it may be in Germany, the policy of social reform is still practicable among us; but we must always bear in mind the high ideals which social ism has placed before the masses of the people, and which they have absorbed. My object is to lay before the people, in order that they may carefully consider them, the reasons for thinking that Socialism is in theory and practice absolutely opposed and contrary to the principles of Americanism, of democracy, and even of the christian-jewish religion itself.
