Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Social Reformers The object of these few sketches is to elucidate the chief influences for social and industrial reform that have been active in England in the past, and, in one or two cases, to show their relation to problems of the present. In writing of the men from whom these influences proceeded, I have tried to let them, where possible, speak for themselves. If, therefore, it should seem that too large a portion of the text in certain places is in inverted commas, it is because the present writer recognizes that the words of the reformers he quotes are much better than his own. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reforms and Reformers of England One omission requires to be noticed here, which escaped the Editor of the present edition. Mr. Wal lace of Kelly, the late member for Greenock, was the original champion of Postal Reform, and should have been mentioned as such along with Mr. Rowland Hill, who has himself done full justice to Mr. Wallace's early labours. On page 218, also, Colonel Thompson has been named by Mr. Staunton as the colleague of Dr. Bowring, in the first proceedings for abolishing the Corn Laws, instead of Mr. Archibald Prentice, who presided at the original Manchester Meeting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Thelwall: A Pioneer of Democracy and Social Reform in England During the French Revolution When it comes to noticing the immediate influence of the French Revolution upon England in the years following 1789, the facts at first sight seem to con tradict all probabilities and expectations. Owing partly to the excesses and the ill-advised aggressive ness of the French, partly to a quickening of the traditional hatred between the two countries, the direct influence of the French Revolution in England was an all but universal rise of anti-revolutionary feeling, a panic of the property-owning and govern ing classes, the temporary suspension of constitutional securities, and a five-and-twenty years' interruption in the onward march of political progress. Her home-life, among the educated classes, is natural and refined; her literary society delightful; the work of her noble women in reforms, an inspiration to effort; and her philanthropic measures unexcelled, even in our own great Republic. Whatever England has done for the Higher Education of Woman, or in opening to her new lines of employment, or in reducing poverty and crime, or in helping to solve the complex labor-problem, deserves our earnest consideration. Not all the good of this world is centred in any one people, and each nation can learn from the other. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Three Reforms of Parliament: A History, 1830-1885 This volume has grown out of a. Lecture which I delivered last winter in several towns of the North of England. I soon found, as my reading on the' subject advanced, that I had very much more to say than could be comprised within the limits of a single lecture; and, besides, the subject itself so increased in interest to me, that I could not be satisfied till I had set down, in writing, not only what I had gathered from books, but also some of my own recollections and reflec tions. Thus, this history rather grew than was made. Under the circumstances, I dare not claim for it that it is exhaustive. It is, in fact, an extended lecture. But my aim in pre paring it has been to trace the successive steps, and the struggles, by which the existing repre sentation of the people in Parliament has been reached; and likewise to show how each step in Parliamentary Reform has been followed byeconomic and social reforms of scarcely less value. Of course, this latter part of my inten tion could be only partially accomplished by me or by any one at this time. I have recorded some of the results of the first two, ureforms the results of the third and the (so far) greatest Reform must be recorded hereafter by another hand. I envy him who will have to tell the tale. For, grand as is that chapter in' our history which is looked at from a single point of view only in this volume, I believe that the next chapter will be infinitely grander and I am confident that it will both illustrate and confirm those Liberal principles of legislation - I would rather say, those Radical principles - to which I have been attached from my youth up, and which I cherish in ever increasing affection with advancing years. This book was released on 2021-02 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "John Wesley and Karl Marx, unmistakably, are the two most influential characters of all modern history." So argues J. Wesley Bready in this classic statement on the social significance of the original evangelical movement in Great Britain. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, at least, evangelical religion-as found in the life and teaching of John Wesley-had profound consequences that were anything but an opiate of the people (contra the teachings of Karl Marx). Instead, "vital religion" proved itself to be powerfully transformative, not only in the personal lives of its converts, but also in the deepest fibre of their social and political lives. J. Wesley Bready's careful documentation of the profound social and political influence of John Wesley's preaching and teaching will, for many readers today, prove to be a convincing demonstration of the transformative power of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The power and scope of this evangelical Christian influence was extraordinary: from education to health care; from the needs of the poor and orphans, to prison reform and the founding of democratic institutions; from the promotion of good reading to an end to cruelty to animals (and founding of the RSPCA). All of these, and more, are the hallmarks and outward manifestations of a vital Christian faith. Nothing could illustrate more convincingly that "faith without works is dead" and, contrary to Marx, that the gospel of Jesus Christ more typically serves as a sharp awakening rather than an opiate of the people. Rev. Dr. J. Wesley Bready (1887-1953) was a Canadian-born scholar and author of numerous books, including Wesley and Democracy (1939), Lord Shaftesbury (1900), This Freedom-Whence? (1942), and Faith and Freedom: The Roots of Democracy (1946). He held degrees from Queen's University, University of Toronto, Columbia University, and University of London.
