The purpose of the study was to determine whether the quality of the parents' marital relationship and the parent-youth relationship were predictive of conflict and closeness in the youth's romantic relationships. Data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 were analyzed using parent and youth reports from 1997 and 2001. The analyses revealed that parents' marital relationship, and not the parent-youth relationship, was influential on the youth's romantic relationship five years later. Specifically, the mother's compromise behaviors significantly predicted the amount of conflict in the youth's romantic relationship. Implications of these results for family life educators and marriage and family therapists are presented.
