Book excerpt: Social-emotional learning involves the promotion of favorable school and life outcomes for all students, specifically, as it relates to prosocial behaviors. While research indicates that social-emotional learning is helpful in decreasing problem behaviors for all students, historically marginalized students are largely overrepresented in national school discipline data compared to their peers. In this study, I utilized descriptive, multiple logistic regression and multiple linear regression analyses to explore the predictive relationships between race and socioeconomic status (SES) and the occurrence of a behavior incident in a school environment in which a nationally recognized social-emotional, character development program was implemented. Archival data obtained from this predominantly White, middle-class high school setting was reviewed through the cultural lens of dominant and subordinate group dynamics. The results indicate that subordinate groups (Black, Hispanic, and economically disadvantaged students) were twice as likely as their dominant group counterparts were (White, noneconomically disadvantaged students) to experience a behavior incident. The findings demonstrate the need for culturally responsive social-emotional learning programs, contending that critical self-reflection of individuals as well as critical reflection of system structures must be institutionalized to address the discipline disparities that persist when traditional social-emotional learning programs are implemented.
