Everybody needs to be socially competent for living a better life in society, having good relationships and interactions with others. Researchers have concluded that deficits in social competence can affect later success in life. Social competence has frequently been cited as a critical component of life adjustment (e.g., Epstein & Cullinan, 1987; Neel, 1988). In particular, the importance of social competence and related personality features has been stressed for individuals who have mental retardation or other developmental disabilities (e.g., Balla & Zigler, 1979). As a consequence, social skills instruction has increasingly been recognized as a key component to be included in intervention programs for students who are mildly mentally retarded. (Gable. A.R & Warren. F.S., 1993). The American Association on Mental Retardation (2002), defines mental retardation as "Mental retardation is disability characterized by significant limitation both in intellectual functioning and in adaptive behavior as expressed in conceptual, social and practical adaptive skills. This disability originates before age 18". (p.1). Social skills are specific behaviors that facilitate interpersonal interactions and maintain a degree of independence in daily functioning. Social competence involves the use of those skills at the right times and places, showing social perception, cognition, and judgment of how to act in a particular situation and how to adjust one's behavior to meet different situations (Greenspan, 1979, 1990; Kerr & Nelson, 1989; Sargent, 1989).

Chapter 1 provides a conceptual framework of social competence with principles of what, when, and how to teach social skills. Chapter 2 discusses the direct instruction of social skills including use of simulation and specific instructional procedures and processes. The bulk of the book consists of specific lesson plans organized by level (primary, intermediate, middle school/junior high school, and senior high school) and skill areas. Skill areas include: (1) classroom related skills, such as attending to the teacher during instruction and following classroom rules; (2) school-building related skills, such as boarding school buses, responding to school authority, and using free time productively; (3) personal skills; (4) interaction initiative skills; (5) interaction response skills; (6) community related skills, such as asking for directions, sportsmanship, and respecting public property; and (7) work related skills. Each lesson plan includes the objective, performance criteria, materials needed, and procedures (often outlined in detail). The definition of learning disability recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India and accepted for this study was originally recommended by U. S. Government in Public Law 94-142. It states: "Specific Learning Disabilities means a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, which may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen, speak, read, spell or to do mathematical calculations. The term includes such conditions as perceptual handicaps, brain injury, minimal brain dysfunction, dyslexia and developmental aphasia. The term does not include children who have learning problems which are primarily the result of visual, hearing or motor handicaps, or mental retardation, emotional disturbance or environmental, cultural or economic disadvantages". Although the disability manifests largely as deficits in learning processes and affects academic success, there is research evidence to show that it impacts a person's self-worth and social relationships. Research emanating from western contexts has reported difficulties in social adjustment of children and adolescents with learning disability, particularly with reference to peer relations.
