Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Civics Many excellent textbooks are already available for the teaching of civics. Why should another be added to the number? Wherein does this book differ from the rest? What are its outstanding features? The Plan. This book covers a wider range than most texts. It includes not only a survey of governmental framework and functions, but many topics which are ordinarily spoken of as questions in economics, sociology, and international relations. The propriety of including such topics scarcely requires a defensive argument now adays, for the old lines of demarcation in the social sciences are rapidly breaking down. The problems of our complex modern civilization pay no heed to technical boundaries. They are the joint product of political, social, and eco nomic forces. No one can get a grasp of them if he lets his mind run on a single track. A well-organized course in civics, or in the problems of democracy, should acquaint the student with the great institutions, relations, and principles which dominate the life of the community. To accomplish this end it should carry him as far afield as need be. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canadian Civics One of the most important duties of the state is to provide for the education of the children who will some day be its masters. Democracy with all its good and evil must be accepted as the basis of modern govern ment. Though here and there a philosopher may scoff at the suffrage of the plow, yet social order and stability must henceforth depend on either the tolerance or the good will of the masses of the people. The time when a small educated class could safeguard the glories of civilized life and the arts by the use of physical or moral force, is rapidly disappearing. Therefore, it is a self-evident fact that the state ought to teach its future citizens the worth of our civilization and the ways of preserving it from impairment, and of assisting in its progress. We must no longer, as those of an earlier age, walk calmly over the surface underneath which slumbers the volcano of popular passion. The fruits of centuries of toil are too precious to be exposed to any possibility of injury. There must be a means sought for training our people in social and civic responsibility. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Crisis: The Duty of Government They have fortified the base line of progress and prevented rout and social disintegration, while the reformers have gone out to battle for new con quests. One party has been static, the other dynamic. The conservatives have been the party of wealth and culture, while the reformers have disregarded personal advantage, the decorum of' conventional customs, and, upheld by enthusiasm, have sought in poverty and often in shame a fuller recognition of justice and truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Town Study: Suggestions for a Course of Lessons Preliminary to the Study of Civics Many teachers are realising that Town Study, no less than Nature Study, has its claims to a place in the school programme. The School is the instrument which Society employs for the development of its future citizens. Good citizenship depends, no doubt, upon a sense of duty, but a sense of duty is deepened by interest and understanding. These chapters are offered to Teachers as suggestions for the treatment of topics which may arouse such interest, and thereby, it is hoped, add some impulse towards that movement for social betterment which is happily an increasing force in our time. It is throughout assumed that the Teacher will vivify the necessarily bare outlines here given by constant reference to local examples and conditions. The thanks of the writer are due to James Roberts, Esq., M.A., LL.B., of the Inner Temple, for kindly looking over proof-sheets. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Harmonism: Human Rights Under Functional Government Led by conservative thought and selfish power, the race has always been enamored of old laws. Most of these old common and statutory laws are low laws arising from the low natural laws of man's nature. Their operative results have been selfish aggrandizement for the party in power, for the man in control, and for the elements of society in control. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chicago Commons: A Social Center for Civic Co-Operation This call out of the great (leep of the common life was answered out of the depth of some individual lives. A heart hunger for a larger share of the race life, a greater part in real things, a conscious identity with the common life sprang up here and there among those who, for one reason or another, felt more or less apart from human kind. So, more by an instinctive impulse than by any concerted movement, groups of men and women, at first only from the universities, but more and more from other and equally adequate sources of supply, took up their residence among and became a part of the residential population in the industrial districts of the cities. Thus social settlements arose almost spontaneously, just where the density of population and complexity of life most lacked and demanded the ideal, the initiative and the common ground which, in part, at least, are supplied at these co-operative centers. We, who are at Chicago Commons to share the common lot, choose to live, for our own and others' sake, where we seem to be most needed, rather than where the neigh borhood is supposed to offer the most of social privilege or prestige. We are here to be all we can to the people and to receive all they are to us as friends and neighbors. We assume the full obligations and claim all the rights of citizenship in a community with whose interests we identify ourselves. Whose conditions we share and for whose home happiness, material welfare, political freedom and social privilege and progress we try to do our part. When in order to be entrusted with and legally hold the tenure of a building and its equipment for neighborhood service, a few friends of the settlement and its community were incorporated under the laws of Illinois into the very informally organized Chicago Commons Association, its purpose was formulated for the articles of incorporation thus The object for which it is formed is to provide a center of a higher civic and social life, to initiate and maintain religious, educational and philanthropic enterprises, and to investigate and improve conditions in the industrial districts of Chicago. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political Man: The Social Bases of Politics These studies in the sociology of politics are not intended pri marily as a collection of essays which happen to be written by the same person. Rather, I tried to select from my various articles those which best illustrate the contribution the sociologist can make to an understanding of democratic political systems. In so doing, it became clear that a book prepared solely from already existing articles would create difficulties for the reader because it would omit many problems and issues which should logically be discussed. I have attempted to remedy this deficiency by writing a number of essays especially for this volume and by extensively rewriting others. By these revisions, I have tried to create an inte grated book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
