This is surprising as the service industry plays an important role in the global services trade transactions and business activities. Social capital enables and maintains social relations for business transformation for service-oriented firms. Indeed, it would be unimaginable for any economic activity, particularly in service-oriented firms, to occur without social capital. This examination of social capital in the Asia Pacific region provides the context for recognising the cultural, social and economic opportunities and challenges of several Asia Pacific countries that can potentially enrich our knowledge and understanding of the region. Contributions are drawn from cases based in Thailand, Indonesia, South Korea, China and Australia, for relevant application in the areas of social capital and service-oriented firms in the Asia Pacific. Since the social dimension of sustainable development is the least understood of what are often viewed as its three imperatives (the other two being the ecological and economic), the book illuminates the importance of understanding this dimension and how it can be mobilized at the community level. This is shown by applied research in a number of small, predominantly rural Australian and Canadian communities. Given the number of small communities in both countries struggling to diversify from single-resource economies in a context of increasing globalization, this topic touches on several critical public policy issues. The contributors argue that the key strategies for communities to respond to the issues they are facing must be embedded in the dialectics of sustainable development. Unless this critical imperative is met, single-resource economy communities will continue to face ecological, social, and economic collapse. Book excerpt: This book, in twelve chapters, aims to explore the intersection of three very different but related 'fuzzy' concepts - engaged governance, social capital, and sustainable development. Our thesis is that sustainable development in Asia (as elsewhere) depends on strong stocks of social capital. We imply in this statement, a prioritization of grass-roots, or demand driven development, one that may operate in the gaps left by ineffective state institutions, or more optimistically in a synergistic relation with the state. Sustainable development does not just happen; it needs to be managed. But what does that mean in the context of local needs, local direction, recognizing the intersection of environmental, economic and social imperatives? More specifically, who manages and how? The answers to these questions are not likely to be easy or obvious because 'good governance' is context specific. The primary focus of the book is a positive one - given the opportunity, what can be achieved even among the very poorest of the poor people, through their combined and co-operative actions. Cooperative actions and social capital may lead to 'engaged governance' to help achieve sustainable development. Since 'engagement' can be measured in terms of: an instrument that contributes to the achievement of both development policy and governance objective(s); a procedure that creates appropriate opportunities for participation and the provision of information to facilitate meaningful participation; and transforms the capacity of participants to engage and strengthen the governance system and democracy (Graham, et al., 2003; Guthrie, 2003), social capital as propounded by Putnam and others are likely to achieve all in different forms to help in sustainable development. The chapters within this Volume, including eight specific national and local contexts from selected countries, explore some complexity and interdependence of engaged governance, social capital and sustainable development. All country chapters are written by respective indigenous academics, and are based on primary surveys, field observations, direct interviews, other scholarly publications, and documents published by the respective government, the organizations or programs under discussion, as appropriate.

This book addresses how sustainability management in the Asian context is currently practised and proposes practices for the future.Investigation of the effect of business domain characteristics on the integration of sustainability and management, and elucidation of the process and features of EMCS (Environmental Management Control System) inside and outside of companies have been indicated. The book points that companies need to use and design Sustainability Management Control Systems in order to implement a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) strategy and match employees' behavior to CSR activities.MFCA (Material Flow Cost Accounting) has started to expand rapidly into other Asian industries from Japan as a method of Environmental Management Control. The fundamental idea and procedure of MFCA and many case examples of Japanese MFCA have been reported. These findings help us to consider a policy for continuous use of MFCA. Moreover, the relationship between Toyota Production System and MFCA has been explained and 'Material Flow Time Costing' as a new management accounting concept is proposed.Based on the literature review, the study has made recommendations for Asian companies' strategic management and governmental policy-making to improve both quality and quantity of sustainability disclosure in Asia. One of the papers has identified the development and implementation of social and environmental accounting by Indonesian state-owned enterprises and their determining factors. In a Japanese manufacture, the effect of smoothed production has been analyzed as an example of environmental management. This led to an increase in production quality without additional capital spending.
