The current study was a secondary analysis of a cross-sectional survey with undergraduate participants (N=1147, M age=26, 56% female) on the topics of social anxiety, drinking motives, and heavy episodic drinking. As hypothesized, social anxiety predicted the drinking to cope motivation, as well as the other drinking motivations. Drinking to cope also significantly predicted alcohol use in the sample. Alcohol consumption was at a hazardous level of consumption, though the relationship between social anxiety and alcohol use was found to be inconclusive. Further, this study represented a non-traditional college-aged student sample, demonstrating that the findings from traditional college-aged samples have been replicated.

Book excerpt: Alcohol consumption is a prominent component of the college culture; high-risk consumption may lead to detrimental consequences for the student. Problematic alcohol consumption is linked to sexual assault, drunk driving, vandalism, and other unlawful activities. The degree to which students conform to the perceived social norms of the culture of the campus may impact the amount of alcohol that students consume; perceived social norms are often higher than the actual consumption amounts. Social anxiety may also impact the degree to which students will self-monitor their behavior in order to conform to their perceptions of the drinking norms. Drinking motives may also play a part in the amount and frequency of alcohol consumed, whether it's participating in drinking games during social gatherings, or consuming at the same rate as their peers for social acceptance. The study tested two hypotheses. The first hypothesis states: H1: The relationship between social anxiety and alcohol consumption would be moderated by perceived social norms. The second hypothesis states: H2: The relationship between social anxiety and alcohol consumption would be mediated by the drinking motives of coping and social pressure/conformity. Social anxiety was measured by the Liebowitz Social Anxiety scale (LSAS). The measure for alcohol consumption was based on self-reports for the number of drinks consumed per week. The measure for perceived social norms was the comparisons of the actual number of drinks consumed by the participant pool on average per week, in comparison with the number of drinks that the participant estimates that their peer consumes per week. The measure for social norms/alcohol expectancies and drinking motives was the evaluation of the responses sampled from the CORE Alcohol and Drug Survey and Drinking Motives Questionnaire- Revised (DMQR). The results indicated that the students who overestimated the alcohol consumption of their peers reported lower levels of alcohol consumption. Perceived social norms did not moderate the relationship between social anxiety and alcohol consumption. There was no significance found in the mediation of either of the drinking motives in the relationship between social anxiety and alcohol consumption.

Book excerpt: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) and alcohol use disorders (AUDs; i.e., alcohol dependence, alcohol abuse) are highly prevalent and potentially debilitating. They also commonly co-occur, and when they do, their combined effect may be even more devastating. The onset of SAD most commonly precedes the onset of AUDs, suggesting that SAD may be a marker or risk factor for the onset of these other disorders. Previous research has not sufficiently examined the mechanisms involved in the development of AUDs, and longitudinal research is lacking. The current study examined mechanisms related to the development of AUDs among incoming college freshman students at two large universities in the United States. Incoming freshmen are at higher risk for developing symptoms consistent with SAD, particularly during their first semester, and they may be more likely to cope with their symptoms of anxiety by drinking alcohol. The current study aimed to explicate the relationship between social anxiety and alcohol consumption in college freshmen. Baseline data collection occurred late in the summer after registration for the Fall semester or early in the Fall semester. Follow-up data collection occurred later in the Fall semester. It was expected that social anxiety, the quantity and frequency of drinking alcohol (including frequency of intoxication), and alcohol-related problems would increase among the freshmen over the course of the fall semester. Additionally, several relationships among the variables being examined were hypothesized. Drinking motives, symptoms of depression, and quality of life were expected to mediate the relationship between social anxiety and the drinking outcome variables. In addition, expectancies about alcohol consumption were expected to moderate the mediated relationship. However, there were no increases in social anxiety, alcohol consumption, or alcohol-related problems between baseline and follow-up. There were few hypothesized relationships found, although there was a positive relationship between social anxiety and negative alcohol expectancies and a negative relationship between social anxiety and quality of life. Model testing generated one promising model in which the relationship of positive expectancies regarding alcohol use to alcohol use and problems was mediated by coping with anxiety drinking motives. In particular, the main effect of positive expectancies of alcohol and coping with anxiety drinking motives generated a medium effect whereas the other relationships generated small to medium effects. Clinical implications and limitations of the current study are discussed.

Book excerpt: The current study examined the relationship between social anxiety, social support, and alcohol use among 186 college students from Central Connecticut State University. As predicted, scores on the college salience scale were positively related to alcohol use and Cooper's (1994) four drinking motives (social, coping, enhancement, and conformity). Furthermore, social support had a negative relationship with frequency of alcohol consumption but no significant relationship with any other variable of interest. Social anxiety was negatively related to frequency of alcohol use, but positively related to social, coping and conformity drinking motives. Multiple regression analyses indicated that college salience is strongly related to both frequency and amount of alcohol consumed and all four drinking motives, suggesting that college students who believe alcohol plays an important or large role in the college experience are more likely to drink more often and have more alcohol per occasion. Moreover, they were also more likely to use drinking for positive and negative reinforcement in hopes of attaining certain behavioral outcomes such as receiving positive social responses or to regulate negative emotional responses. This study contributes to the current research and is important because it adds to the current information regarding social support, social anxiety and alcohol use among college students.

Book excerpt: A preponderance of research has explored the relationship between social anxiety and alcohol-related problems in college students often with a focus on the role of motivation for drinking, consumption levels, and alcohol-related outcome expectancies as factors in the relationship. Yet, to date, very limited research has explored whether co-morbidity between social anxiety and alcohol-related problems persist in older, post-college young adults or whether the factors that influence that relationship in college students persist in a post-college environment. The current study measured social anxiety, alcohol consumption, motives, expectations, related problems, and convivial drinking events in a sample of college students (18-22 year old) and post-college young adults (26-35 years old) as well as explored whether a unified model of the relationship could be found in either or both groups. Results indicated greater social anxiety in the college aged group and few differences in alcohol-related factors between groups. No relationship between social anxiety and alcohol-related problems was found in the college student group, while in the post-college young adult group, coping motives served as a suppressor to that relationship with gender moderating that mediation. Exploratory analysis revealed when controlling for age, gender moderated the relationship between social anxiety and alcohol-related problems through coping motives. These results may provide further evidence of the complexity of the relationship between social anxiety and alcohol-related problems as well as the importance of accounting for other factors, such as gender and age, when conceptualizing risk and treatment.

Book excerpt: Prior literature has used self-report measures of alcohol motivation, which are notably sensitive to response bias, in addition to either performance or social interaction threat stimuli, in order to identify circumstances under which socially anxious students are more vulnerable to problem-inducing alcohol consumption. The current study measured social anxiety, alcohol consumption, motives, and related problems, and employed an Implicit Association Task (IAT), which measures implicit cognitions through response times. IAT scores compared both performance and social interaction threat exposure to examine the impact of differing social situations on socially anxious students' implicit drinking cognitions. Results showed that the high social anxiety group responded significantly faster to pairings of images of beer and "approach" words when presented with a social interaction threat than with a performance threat. These results may demonstrate that the type of threatening situations socially anxious students are exposed to, as well as their implicit drinking cognitions, may play a key role in determining when and whether they are more likely to consume alcohol and develop problems as a result. Identifying these circumstances in the future may be useful in developing intervention strategies for socially anxious students with alcohol-related problems.

Research demonstrates that drinking for coping motives impedes that maturing out process (Littlefield, Sher, & Wood, 2010). Social anxiety (SA) may be a particularly relevant risk factor for problematic drinking during these formative years. Drinking in university often occurs in (anxiety provoking for some) social situations and heavy drinking is often promoted and normalized by peers in these contexts. The goal of this study was to investigate SA as a risk factor for continued problematic drinking during the transition out of university. It was hypothesized that SA would be a positive predictor of drinking for coping motives and problematic drinking during the 9-months post-graduation, but only for those who believed that peers approved of heavy/risky drinking (i.e., high injunctive norms). Graduating students (N = 120 at baseline) completed online surveys pre- and post-graduation (3-, 6-, 9-month follow-ups). SA, injunctive norms, drinking motives, and problematic drinking were assessed. Latent growth curve modeling was used to test injunctive norms (between subject) as a moderator of the effect of SA (between subject) on within person change in coping drinking motives, alcohol use, and alcohol-related problems. Only the interactive effect on alcohol-related problems was supported. Counter to hypotheses, elevated SA was associated with a more rapid decline in alcohol-related problems, if injunctive norms were high. These results suggest that the transition out of university may be somewhat protective in terms of reducing risk for problematic drinking for some high SA individuals.

Book excerpt: This dissertation focused on understanding the role of coping motives in alcohol behaviours and outcomes among undergraduates in a series of three studies. Study 1 examined the effects of drinking motives and mood on lab-based alcohol consumption among 81 undergraduates. Results revealed that socially motivated (SM) drinkers consumed more alcohol when a positive, compared to an anxious, mood was induced. Findings indicated that while CAM drinkers did not consume more alcohol when experiencing anxiety, they also did not show the normative and healthier pattern of inhibiting their alcohol consumption when feeling anxious. Study 2a investigated the cross-sectional role of CAM, coping with depression motives (CDM), and conformity motives in mediating the relationship between the social avoidance aspect of social anxiety and alcohol problems in 263 undergraduates. Results showed that CDM fully mediated this relationship. The use of a social avoidance measure, which is linked to depression, is a potential explanation for this finding. Study 2b replicated and extended Study 2a with 189 undergraduates by including coping with social anxiety motives (CSAM) as well as drinking context (i.e., personal/intimate contexts and negative emotional contexts) as additional mediators in a chained mediation model. Study 2b revealed that in addition to CDM, CSAM fully and independently mediated the social avoidance - alcohol problems relationship. Drinking contexts generally did not sequentially mediate the social avoidance - alcohol problems relationship, though the negative reinforcement drinking motives did predict heavier alcohol consumption in these risky contexts. Finally, Study 3 replicated and extended Study 2a using a longitudinal design with three bi-annual data collection waves over a period of eighteen months in 219 undergraduates. Study 3 showed that CDM mediated the prospective relationship between social avoidance and alcohol problems. Overall, the results of this dissertation shed new light on how various coping motives impact alcohol-related behaviours and outcomes among undergraduates. My findings suggest that learning to inhibit their drinking when anxious may be a helpful harm reduction strategy for CAM drinkers. Moreover, providing socially avoidant undergraduates with healthier coping strategies for social anxiety and associated depressive symptoms may be beneficial in reducing the alcohol problems that develop over time.
