Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social and Religious Life of Italians in America Several years ago a great publishing house desired to get a German book translated into English. The first writer to whom this commission was given was found to know German well, but English not so well. A second writer was found to be better acquainted with English than he was with German. It was not until after a good deal of searching that the happy discovery was made of a man who could both read German and write English excellently. A like discovery appears in the pages of this book. Mr. Sartorio knows the Italian people by nature and by long and intimate acquaintance, and he knows the American people by wise observation and by the fortunate experience of illuminating friendships. Thus he stands in a position which fits him for the important work of interpretation. Our present national situation brings into strong light the unwelcome fact that we have great numbers of neighbors who are not even hyphenated Americans. They are not Americans at all, except by the accident of residence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Italians in America The New Americans Series consists of studies of the following racial groups, together with a study of the Eastern Orthodox Churches: Albanian and Bulgarian, Armenian and Assyrian-Chaldean, Czecho-Slovak, Greek, Italian, Jewish, Jugo-Slav (Croatian, Servian, Slovenian), Magyar, Polish, Russian and Ruthenian, or Ukrainian, Spanish (Spaniards) and Portuguese, Syrian. These studies, made under the auspices of the Interchurch World Movement were undertaken to show, in brief outline, the social, economic and religious background, European or Asiatic, of each group and to present the experience - social, economic and religious - of the particular group in America, with special reference to the contact of the given people with religious institutions in America. It was designed that the studies should be sympathetic but critical. It is confidently believed that this series will help America to appreciate and appropriate the spiritual wealth represented by the vast body of New Americans, each group having its own peculiar heritage and potentialities; and will lead Christian America, so far as she will read them, to become a better lover of mankind. The writer, in each case, is a kinsman or has had direct and intimate relationship with the people, or group of peoples, presented. First hand knowledge and the ability to study and write from a deeply sympathetic and broadly Christian viewpoint were primary conditions in the selection of the authors. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ... by the Roman Church. Little by little, English and German works on modern religious views were translated and put on sale in the chief book-stores of Rome. While great care has been observed that heretical literature be kept from the reach of the priests, ideas and views once set in motion cannot be completely smothered. The results of modern Biblical criticism have found their way into the hands of not only the cultured laity but also the cultured prelates. One of the evident results of Protestantism in Italy has been the publication of the Gospels and the Book of Acts in the Italian language by the Society of St. Gerolamo, which was organized for that special purpose within the Roman Church itself. Several popes prior to 1889 had declared it to be a sin for the laity to read the Bible. As late as 1869, persons were arrested within the papal states for presuming to read the Bible, even in family worship. Travelers were searched as they entered Rome, and if they possessed Bibles, the books were confiscated. Both Pope Pius ix and Leo xiii declared ex cathedra that it was unlawful for Catholics to read the Bible. But in 1898 Leo xiii sanctioned the establishment of the Society of San Gerolamo, for the above-mentioned purpose, and in the preface of that publication each Catholic is promised one hundred days' indulgence if he reads the gospel each day. What brought about the change in attitude? It certainly was not the conviction that the Gospels are an indispensable help to the religious life. The change was caused by the Protestant propaganda, the preaching in season and out of season that the preachers were not proclaiming their own thoughts but the word of God. With time this had its impression. Faithful Romanists insisted on having the...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Italian in America The design of "The Italian in America" is to present clearly the contribution of Italy to American development and citizenship. The work is one of a series reviewing the influx of the various racial strains and nationalities that are making up the composite American. The authors have in view simply the recital of facts for impartial consideration, for no concern of this country is more momentous and urgent than the national dealing with the problems of immigration, congestion, distribution and education for American standards of living and citizenship. To exclude what is essentially bad or unfusible from any source - to welcome and utilize what is essentially good and helpful, even if yet imperfectly developed, is in the judgment of the authors the true American policy.
