Selected for their comparative and transnational interests and experiences, the contributors include Martin Albrow, Karin Knorr Cetina, Diane E. Davis, Pierpaolo Donati, Leon Grunberg, Horst J. Helle, Eiko Ikegami, Tiankui Jing, Hyun-Chin Lim, Ewa Morawska, Richard Münch, Saskia Sassen, Joachim J. Savelsberg, Piotr Sztompka, Edward A. Tiryakian and Ruut Veenhoven. Each contributor provides an auto-biographical review of their journey into the discipline, with special attention paid to the intellectual and social-political contexts in which their work matured. Each chapter concludes with a commentary on the anticipated future direction of that particular sociological area. These original and reflective contributions provide fascinating and rare insights into the careers of sociologists living in a global age.

Book excerpt: Annotation Brings together the prevailing thinking surrounding the issue of workforce reduction to help managers and executives ensure a successful transition to a more robust and effective organization. Articles and books reviewed were found in both practitioner-oriented sources such as magazines and popular books, as well as scholarly journals. Sources were selected for annotation based on their perceived relevance to the body of literature, their unique perspective, and their general interest. Entries are in-depth, with many a page or more in length. Annotations are organized in three sections on the organizational, the organization-individual relationship, and the individual perspectives. Section introductions summarize key themes. Hickok holds a Doctor of Public Administration degree from the University of Southern California, and is a consultant to the US Defense Intelligence Agency. Annotation c. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A far-reaching transformation is taking place in the US in the relationship between employers and employees. The lessons learned from Japan and from "best practice" companies like IBM about how job security, training, and internal development can improve employee commitment and performance have given way to a new set of lessons about how companies can redue fixed costs, increase flexibility, and improve performance by eliminating the elaborate employment systems that prepared employees for long careers in the company. Where the old arrangement protected employees from outside market forces, the new ones drag the market right back in through downsizing, contingent workforces, hiring on the outside for new skills, and compensation contingent on overall organizational performance. New work systems that reengineer processes and empower employees "flatten" the organizational chart, cutting management jobs in particular and reducing opportunities for career development. The new arrangements shift many of the risks of business from the firm to the employees and make employees, rather than employers, responsible for developing their own skills and careers. They also increase the demands placed on workers while reducing what they receive back for their efforts. While morale is down and stress is up, employee performance seems to be rising largely because of fear driven by the shortage of good jobs. Change at Work explores the theme that employees have paid the price for the widespread restructuring of American firms as illustrated by reduced security, greater effort and hours, and reduced morale. In this important study--commissioned by the National Planning Asociation's Committee on New American Realities--the authors consider how individuals and employers need to adapt to the new arrangements as well as the implicatioons for important policy issues such as how skills will be developed where the attachment to the firms is sharply reduced. The future is uncertain, but the authors argue that the traditional relationship between employer and employee will continue to erode, making this work essential reading for managers concerned with the profound impact corporate restructuring has had on the lives of workers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the greatest strengths of business ethics research lies in the diversity of backgrounds of those interested in knowing more about it. Where else could we find moral philosophers, industrial psychologists, political scientists, and organizational sociologists hard at work exploring the same issues? These scholars bring to the table an intriguing mix of skills and viewpoints, many of which may be quite different from--and complementary to--those trained in functional areas of business-like management. However, this diversity also reflects a weakness. Researchers from such different backgrounds may be either unable or unwilling to talk to and work with each other in understanding more about these issues. This book bridges the gap and provides a basic reference volume for current business ethics researchers. Second, it stimulates new ways of thinking about, and creating interest in, linking management and ethics among those researchers. Third, it triggers management and ethics researchers who do not currently study business ethics problems to consider the implications of each to their current interests. The central theme of the book is that efforts must be made to better integrate management and ethical theory. Although the market contains a number of good business ethics books, none combines management theory with ethical theory on a chapter-by-chapter, topic-by-topic basis. This book bridges the theoretical, empirical, and at times practical gap between management and ethical scholars.
