Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social norms are regarded one of the constraints in the exchange process in the economy. The present article discusses the role of social norms in economic development, basically the economy of India and Assam. Considering the two models of social norms discussed by Vijay Jagannathan and Barbara Harriss, it has been argued that there are some differences in the economy of India and Assam regarding the role of social norms. It is difficult to violate social norms of a particular society for the purpose of economic development, because these have historical and cultural values attached with the social life of the people of the respective society. The social norms that have been adversely affecting on economic development need to be polished such a way that balance can be attained between social norms and economic development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amrit Kaal is going to be the most important 25 years of modern India. The indomitable spirit, indestructible grittiness, and undefeatable resolve of almost one-fifth of the global population, as it marches towards prosperity, are set to shape the country’s future in significant ways. While India aims to be a developed country with a GDP of 25 trillion dollars and an upper middle-income country with a per capita income of 10 thousand dollars, the northeast region, particularly Assam, must contribute equally to the growth story of the nation. Assam is a mesmerising Indian state, brimming with diversity and culture, but it also faces economic complexities due to years of disturbances. To catch up with the other developed states, a quick shift of gear needs to be made by applying a model of development that embraces the rich tapestry of Assam’s heritage. The Assam Model is a development approach that comprises short-term goals, such as promoting local industries and attracting investment from established businesses. It also includes aspirational development programs that can bring exponential growth to the state. While Social development is one of the core areas of the model, the efficiency of government enterprises takes as much prominence as running intelligent governance with digital technologies. Celebrating the resilience of a state that continues to evolve and flourish amidst the winds of change, this book contemplates the path ahead towards a prosperous future. Whether you’re an academic, a policymaker, or an inquisitive individual eager to understand Assam’s socio-economic dynamics, The Assam Model of Development in Amrit Kaal offers a compelling blend of knowledge and inspiration. The author expects that the suggestive tone of the book should be construed as an invitation for discussion and debate on the topic of development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book 'Spectrum ' is a concatenation of a rainbow of ideas focusing on the litany of hindrances that have hobbled the upward march of society. The research articles to be published in' Spectrum' can be pigeonholed into different segments considering their political, social, and economic implications. The contributors in this research book have hit upon the prospects and avenues of economic growth that might take society to an unhindered development trajectory. The research articles have thrown sufficient light on the knock-on -effects of imbalanced growth witnessed in different socio-political firmament and thus the articles are a sincere attempt at building an egalitarian world based on the principles of equality and fraternity. Economic prosperity and imbalanced growth- two contradictory ideas- have been adequately highlighted bringing to the surface the reality as to how important balanced development is in every field to fructify the dream of a prosperous society. If we think of building a classless society then the first requirement would be to do away with the prevailing social chasm created by the imbalanced economic growth and also by social injustice and for that matter, Gandhi's principles can serve as a beacon of hope for a society steeped in parochial viewpoints. 'Spectrum' is throwing light on the practical values of Gandhi's doctrines to usher in an ideal society. It is further noted that NEP 20 ' has created much stir in the field of education showing itself as a trailblazing force or initiative and one of the research articles in 'Spectrum ' is trying to pour out colours to every socio-economic aspect expecting the society to be able to keep pace with the challenges of fluctuating times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women's Agency and Social Change: Assam and Beyond focuses on varied oppression, power relations and ideologies embedded in the complex yet interdependent social, political, economic and legal structures, and women's subordination therein. British intervention, 1826-1947, by itself did not impact the agency aspect on women directly, but the emergence of new forces and factors sowed the seeds of women's agency to impact social change, even if minimal. In the post-Independence period, British colonial legacy perpetuated the subordination of women through caste and class hierarchy at several levels, but an undercurrent of a feminist struggle persisted, not merely as a movement but also at individual levels. The book is written with the hope of encouraging future research on women's experiences in the Northeastern region of India, and elsewhere; hence, a discussion on sources, methods and methodology is included in the conclusion. This book is based on the belief that knowledge production is, in itself, the praxis against oppressive structures and the need to understand the historical processes that slowly transformed women to become catalysts of social transformation.
