The aim of the study was to investigate hydration status and knowledge regarding hydration and fluid replacement among East Los Angles College soccer players and to evaluate whether their current hydration status during practice could affect their dribbling and shooting performance. Data were collected from six male soccer players before and after a 50 min practice session. The practice session began at 3:00 pm when the environmental condition was 28℗ʻC and relative humidity was 57%. Before and after practice, all players were weighted nude and urine samples were collected to evaluate hydration status via urine specific gravity (USG). The players also completed the Zelenka Functional Performance Test before and after practice. Following the completion of the skill test, all players were given a hydration questionnaire to assess their hydration knowledge. The mean weight loss was 0.93 ℗ł 0.32 kg and was significantly different from pre to post practice. Sweat rate was calculated as 0.67 ℗ł 0.2 L/hr, while fluid intake during the 50 min was 1.01 ℗ł 0.52 L. On average, players began practice dehydrated, USG = 1.019 g/mL and finished the practice dehydrated, USG = 1.024 g/mL. There were no significant differences in number of goals pre-post practice and no difference in total to complete the skill test. Based on the subjective questionnaire, it is clear that the soccer players lack the knowledge regarding proper hydration and fluid replacement before, during, and after practice.

It is crucial for athletes to properly replenish fluid and electrolytes lost via sweat in order to optimize their training and recovery. The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of a text-message based hydration education intervention on the knowledge and hydration status of division I female collegiate soccer players.A total of 14 participants completed baseline testing, which included hydration knowledge and behavior questionnaires, and pre- and post-practice weights to calculate % weight change (%WC). The participants also provided a baseline urine sample pre- and post-practice to assess urine specific gravity (USG). A total of 18 text messages were sent during the 6-week intervention phase, with 3 text messages sent per week. The text messages contained educational information on hydration topics. Post-questionnaires were administered after the intervention online, via Qualtrics. Post-intervention USG and weight assessments were not able to be collected due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The averages of pre-training USG (M=1.02, SD= .01) and post-training USG (M= 1.02, SD= .01), did not change from before to after a practice session. There were no significant correlations between pre- training USG and pre- total hydration knowledge scores (r= -.274, p>.05), post- training USG and pre- total knowledge scores (r= .011, p >.05), and %WC and pre- total scores (r= -.184,p>.05). Of the pre-knowledge questionnaire questions there was a significant, moderate, positive relationship between USG and the true/false question asking, 'An athlete should consume 7-10 fl oz of water or sports drink a couple hours before exercise' (r= 0.55, p=.04). There was a numerical increase in the total scores when comparing post questionnaire total scores (M=84.62, SD=6.05) to the pre-questionnaire total scores (M= 79.91, SD=9.55) but it did not reach statistical significance (p=0.14). This study showed that text message-based forms of communication are a feasible intervention that could show a positive improvement in both hydration status and hydration knowledge of athletes. The significance of this study is unclear, and the full impact of this intervention was unable to be determined. More research needs to be gathered on this topic.

The warm-up has long been proposed to optimize performance and prevent injuries via several physiological mechanisms. However, the construction of warm-up protocols for sports teams is widely variable and is primarily based on the personal preferences and experiences of the responsible coach. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of four different warm-up protocols on soccer-skill performance (dribbling, ability, passing accuracy, and agility) by comparing the different warm-up protocols (general, gerneral-specific, and specific) on soccer-skill performance in women collegiate soccer players. Sixteen Midwestern women soccer players participated in this study. Each participant performed four different warm-up protocols on different days. The warm-up protocols were no warm-up, general warm-up, general-to-specific warm-up, and a specific warm-up. Soccer skill performance was tested with the "Modified Zelenka Test," a standardized assessment of soccer dribbling, passing, and agility performance. Two trials were completed in each testing condition. The time to completion of both trials was measured to determine agility, missed cones were counted to determine dribbling ability, and missed goals were counted to determine passing accuracy. Repeated measures ANOVA were used to determine differences between warm-up protocols. Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences in dribbling ability, passing accuracy and agility between the four warm-up protocols, suggesting that none of the protocols tested provides a measurable performance advantage in soccer-specific skills.

Results from Study 2 demonstrated through case study, cross-case analyses and individual engagement scores how a MST program can enhance the quantity and quality of sport sources of enjoyment (SOE), the primary SOE present in collegiate soccer, autonomy-supportive SOE, the role of athletic engagement and how different components become more prominent at different points of the intervention, and sport enjoyment's impact on athletic performance. The discussion focuses on the role of the working implementation model in intervention effectiveness.

Book excerpt: Exposure to sun radiation (SUR) with ambient temperature may be an influencer on athletes' sweat loss in different environments, but the results are not currently known. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of SUR on fluid balance (FB) and hydration status (HS) in athletes exercising indoors and outdoors. Initial FB and HS were assessed in NCAA-DI female soccer athletes (n=10) of a single team in temperate, dry conditions (55-68°F, 18-48% humidity) who were monitored during 3 practices of equal estimated energy expenditure (EE): two outdoors in direct SUR (cold/moderate temperatures) and one indoors without SUR (moderate temperatures). Humidity, temperature, and wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT - a measurement partly based on SUR, including ambient temperature/relative humidity) were recorded using Heat Stress Meters placed in the direct sun or in the shade. Each athlete's semi-nude dry body weight was recorded before and after exercise. Urine samples were taken before, after, and the morning after. Urine specific gravity (USG) was tested to assess HS. Athletes wore combined heart rate and activity monitors to estimate EE and were provided ad libitum water and/or a zero-calorie sports drink. Their total intake included weights of consumed food and drink. Sweat rate was calculated using body weight change and intakes of liquids minus urine losses/hour. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA analyzed group-level differences. No significance was found in total FB (1.01±0.32 L/hr) or EE/hr (444±97.1 kcal/hr) across all days (p>0.05). In analyzing individual athlete results, 40% had consistent USG >1.025 (p=0.001) suggesting potential dehydration. These 4 athletes selected water as their beverage, of which is known that consuming only water does not stimulate drinking behavior as does electrolyte drinks. The remaining 60% were overall not dehydrated (USG 1.025) but must be aware of incidental dehydration in hotter temperatures. The conclusion is that in low-moderate temperatures, athletes self-regulate drinking habits and achieve fluid balance during exercise with or without sun radiation. However, athletes with average USG 1.025 are likely to remain dehydrated in moderate temperatures. The findings suggest that more education would benefit these athletes by ensuring hydration in any environment.

The purpose of this study was to compare Cold-Active (CAR), Cold-Hot-Active (CHAR), and Active (AR) recovery methods on vertical jump (VJ), 15-m Agility Test (AT), Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS), and Total Quality Recovery (TQR) in 23 collegiate female soccer players. Each subject completed all recovery methods in random order during three home game weekend series. Subjects pretested in VJ, AT, DOMS, and TQR two hours before the first game and completed the assigned recovery at its conclusion. AR involved a ten minute cool down on the field at less than 30% VO2max. CAR subjects were immersed into 10°-15° C water for 15 minutes. CHAR subjects alternated immersing in 10°-15° C and 38°-41° C water for one minute periods for 15 minutes. VJ, AT, DOMS, and TQR were tested approximately 24 hours later. Data was analyzed with a 2 X 3 ANOVA. There was no significant interaction between time and treatment, and no significant main effect for group or time for any variable. However, some scores were higher on day two (DOMS=84.53 cm, VJ=19.70 in) than day one (DOMS=67.60 cm, VJ=19.59 in). In conclusion, dependent variables were not significantly affected by recovery methods"--Abstract.

Very little published data have comprehensively described the nutrition and hydration status of adolescent female athletes, therefore, the aim of this study was to report fluid balance and sweat sodium concentration data, anthropometrics, hematological analysis as well as dietary intake of thirty-four junior elite female soccer athletes (15.7? 0.7 years). Hydration assessment (pre-training urine specific gravity, USG), fluid balance and sweat sodium concentration) was conducted during two 90 minute, on-field, group training sessions in mild/cool temperatures (9.8? 3.3?C, 63.0? 12.4% relative humidity). Athletes completed four-day food records, hematological analysis (iron status markers, prealbumin and 25-hydroxyvitamin D), and anthropometric assessment. Results revealed mean body composition of players was 103.1? 35.2mm (sum of seven skinfolds) and 20.2? 5.4% body fat. The mean pre-training USG was 1.018? 0.009, with 45.4% of players in a hypohydrated state (USG>1.020). Players experienced a mean body mass loss of 0.84%? 0.07%, sweat rates of 458.8? 284.9 ml/hour and sweat sodium concentration of 47.6? 11.9mmol/L during training sessions. Mean fluid intake within the 90 minute training sessions was 195? 0.24ml. Less than 1 litre of fluid was consumed by 100% of all participants during training sessions. Limited opportunity for fluid consumption was observed during training, with 6 of 7 sessions providing only a single fluid break. Mean energy intake was 2079? 460kcal/day.
