Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As with everyone, we all go down the path of life. Sometimes that path becomes rough and dangerous, and sometimes the path is just the opposite. So it is with James York. Set in the 1800s this story is a novel based on reality about a person who was forced to leave his loved ones at an early age. He was constantly attacked by hostile natives and raised by the Shoshone who lived near the Snake River. James York becomes a great Shoshone warrior and mountain man feared by his enemies, while being honored by friends. He stepped out of the white mans world and entered an Native American world, almost totally purging all that was white in him. He did this only to be forced back in the white world again, and in doing so, there is a battle within him between the red man and white mans world. With all the pain he must go through in his life, he seems to be able to cope and adapt. As his spirit guide said to him, You will live for a long time and have many children. Also there will be some sadness and some happiness. You will be feared by some, as well as admired by others, and you will have great wealth. His spirit guide was correct. He did live long and had the wealth of many descendants, as well as fortune, and his stature was known in America and Britain.

One of these children, James York, a great-grandson of Soaring Eagle, has come of age to make a name for himself in his generation. This novel is set in the late 1960s and throughout James York's life. It's about his struggles, his battles, his brushes with death. As Soaring Eagle With Many Coups', spirit guide told him is also true for his great-grandson; "You will live long and have many children." "There will be some sadness and some happiness. You will be feared by some and admired by others, and you will have great wealth. Sixty percent of this story is authentic; it is about what I went through or witnessed.

Book excerpt: When suddenly, the bear rears up not thirty feet to the front of us; I react instantly, brining my rifle to my shoulder and firing almost at the same instant. I hit him, because, he looks at us. I turn and yell, "Darleen up that tree!" She gets the limb from her saddle while I'm still reloading and pulls her, self up. I wish that tree was bigger but, it was the nearest one to her position. I get my rifle reloaded just as the big grizzly breaks through the underbrush, spruce and aspen saplings not twenty feet in front of me. I throw the gun to my shoulder to fire. But, Pegasus starts' bucking almost, as soon as, the rifle comes to my shoulder. Consequently, I get a shot off but, it's a dead miss; because, both me and the rifle are flying through the air. I hit the ground hard, I lay all sprawled out. The next thing I feel is the bear's hot breath. The rifle is ten feet away it might as well be ten miles and I couldn't reload fast enough anyway.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State development in Africa is risky, even life-threatening. Heads of state must weigh the advantage of promoting political and economic development against the risk of fortifying dangerous political rivals. This book takes a novel approach to the study of neopatrimonial rule by placing security concerns at the center of state-building. Using quantitative evidence from 44 African countries and in-depth case studies of Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire, Rabinowitz demonstrates that the insecurities of the African state make strategically aligning with rural leaders critical to political success. Leaders who cultivate the goodwill of the countryside are better able to endure sporadic urban unrest, subdue political challengers, minimize ethnic and regional discord, and prevent a military uprising. Such regimes are more likely to build infrastructure needed for economic and political development. In so doing, Rabinowitz upends the long-held assumption that African leaders must cater to urban constituents to secure their rule.

Buffalo Dreamer, a holy woman, and her husband, Rising Eagle, have not only been blessed to see the white buffalo, they have eaten of its heart and have been told by the sacred beast that as long as the Lakota have the white buffalo hide, all will be well. But all is not well. White hunters have stolen the sacred white robe and great misfortune has befallen the Lakota. Settlers continue to invade Lakota territory, backed by vicious cavalry forces that massacre women and children. The Lakota are starving and their anger is growing. Led by Rising Eagle, a great force of Lakota and other tribes wage war upon the white man. After Shoshana turned sixteen years of age, her owner, Eli Tanner, made arrangements to sell her to a neighbor plantation owner. His wife, Clara, a staunch abolitionist, makes arrangement for Shoshanna to be taken to Florida until the underground railroad opens up again, and she can get to Philadelphia, to freedom. Flying Eagle, a young Seminole warrior, steals her heart, and she happily settles into life with the Seminoles. Meantime, Eli has offered a large bounty for Shoshana's return. Whitey, a slave bounty hunter, and his partners kidnap Shoshana and take her back to the plantation in Georgia. In 1835, the Second Seminole War begins and after many heartbreaking years of death and hunger, Flying Eagle leads Seminole women, children, and old men deep into the Pahay-okee. (Florida Everglades). Chickees are built, and the women scratch for food much like the wild animals that share the harsh, wet wilderness. Their lives are hard, but they know it is the only way to survive and remain on their homeland. In Pahay-okee, the children would be safe and learn to laugh again. They could teach them to respect the Great Breath Giver's gift of earth, and they could hear the beat of the drums and dance. There, in the swamps of South Florida, where the white man was afraid to venture, they survived, and they never surrendered to the United States.
