Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: divdivHungarian-born composer Sigmund Romberg (1887–1951) arrived in America in 1909 and within eight years had achieved his first hit musical on Broadway. This early success was soon followed by others, and in the 1920s his popularity in musical theater was unsurpassed. In this book, William Everett offers the first detailed study of the gifted operetta composer, examining Romberg’s key works and musical accomplishments and demonstrating his lasting importance in the history of American musicals. Romberg composed nearly sixty works for musical theater as well as music for revues, for musical comedies, and, later in life, for Hollywood films. Everett shows how Romberg was a defining figure of American operetta in the 1910s and 1920s (Maytime, Blossom Time, The Student Prince), traces the new model for operetta that he developed with Oscar Hammerstein II in the late 1920s (The Desert Song, The New Moon), and looks at his reworked style of the 1940s (Up in Central Park). This book offers an illuminating look at Romberg’s Broadway career and legacy./DIV/DIV

Book excerpt: For most mortal men, Broadway would always be shrouded in its own mystique of glamour, pomp, endless parade of famous men and women, and the hidden, always larger-than-life aura of glittering public personalities whose daily activities no one has hardly a clue. Men of Notes is an attempt to give flesh and blood to some of those almost ephemeral individuals- composers, lyricists, orchestra conductors, working musicians, orchestrators, music publishers, etc. The attempt in "Men of Notes" is actually undertaken by one of those people described above. Don Walker is famous for the orchestrations of over 100 Broadway Productions. This memoir of his early years in music was meant to be followed by a second book which would have included Music Man, Damn Yankees, Pajama Game, Cabaret and Fiddler on the Roof to name a few. But he died too soon in 1989, however the publication has fallen into the hands of his daughter, Ann Liebgold. From the outset, readers would feast in the writing style of the author-his lively take on the people he wanted to talk about and the wit and humor he effortlessly delivers, just the type that would give people some inkling how perhaps some brains do work in that often forbidding world. About the Author Don Walker was a native of Lambertville, New Jersey. A professional orchestrator, composer, and conductor, Don enjoyed a brilliant reputation in Broadway. He attended Ryder College in New Jersey and Wharton at University of Pennsylvania Don died in 1989 at the age of 81, leaving behind his wife, Audrey, with whom he had a daughter, Ann Liebgold, and son, David.

Book excerpt: Show Tunes fully chronicles the shows, songs, and careers of the major composers of the American musical theatre, from Jerome Kern's earliest interpolations to the latest hits on Broadway. Legendary composers like Gershwin, Rodgers, Porter, Berlin, Bernstein, and Sondheim have been joined by more recent songwriters like Stephen Schwartz, Stephen Flaherty, Michael John LaChiusa, and Adam Guettel. This majestic reference book covers their work, their innovations, their successes, and their failures. Show Tunes is simply the most comprehensive volume of its kind ever produced, and this newly revised and updated edition discusses almost 1,000 shows and 9,000 show tunes. The book has been called "a concise skeleton key to the Broadway musical" (Variety) and "a ground-breaking reference work with a difference" (Show Music)-or, as the Washington Post observed, "It makes you sing and dance all over your memory." The eagerly anticipated Fourth Edition, updated through May, 2009, features the entire theatrical output of forty of Broadway's leading composers, in addition to a wide selection of work by other songwriters. The listings include essential production data and statistics, the most extensive information available on published and recorded songs, and lively commentary on the shows, songs, and diverse careers. Based on meticulous research, the book also uncovers dozens of lost musicals-including shows that either closed out of town or were never headed for Broadway-and catalogs hundreds of previously unknown songs, including a number of musical gems that have been misplaced, cut, or forgotten. Informative, insightful, and provocative, Show Tunes is an essential guide for anyone interested in the American musical.

This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation: The Index is published in two physical volumes and sold as a set for $250.00. As America's geography and societal demands expanded, the topics in The Etude magazine (first published in 1883) took on such important issues as women in music; immigration; transportation; Native American and African American composers and their music; World War I and II; public schools; new technologies (sound recordings, radio, and television); and modern music (jazz, gospel, blues, early 20th century composers) in addition to regular book reviews, teaching advice, interviews, biographies, and advertisements. Though a valued source particularly for private music teachers, with the de-emphasis on the professional elite and the decline in salon music, the magazine ceased publication in 1957. This Index to the articles in The Etude serves as a companion to E. Douglas Bomberger's 2004 publication on the music in The Etude. Published a little over fifty years after the final issue reached the public, this Index chronicles vocal and instrumental technique, composer biographies, position openings, department store orchestras, the design of a successful music studio, how to play an accordion, recital programs in music schools, and much more. The Index is a valuable tool for research, particularly in the music culture of American in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. With titles of these articles available, the doors are now open for further research in the years to come.
