Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From her thought-provoking All of Mississippi, Aint Mississippi, Brown appears to be up to snuff in coming out and saying whats on her mind. Her adept knowledge of the South and its history lends her a crown of credibility for the literature of reality that says, She just could not have made this stuff up! Snuff Jars and Jelly Glasses, a rich blend of narrative, flows with contemplative musings, reflective poetry, and amusing memoirs. With twinkles of her Southern charm and unique depictions of her beloved Mississippi, Brown delivers a superb, inspirational read, cleverly interlaced with comedy, tragedy, drama, and history of actual journeys and encounters with family and the local pioneers of Mississippis historic Sunflower Plantation, a place she knows like no other. Brown unfolds her anecdotes with crackerjack humor, yet with outspoken affection, even admiration, for those of a more simple mindset who are forever spouting uncanny fonts of profound wisdom with childlike simplicityby simply stating the obvious. Penned from an intuitive over-the-shoulder glance, she enchantingly lures us with hysterical and poignant perceptions that apply to all humanity seeking love, community, friendship, and freedom. Brown incites us to think about the past as we are reminded, again and again, that the issues of our past are indelibly inscribed on our present. Snuff Jars and Jelly Glasses strives to anchor usas elapsing time draws us backward, toward homein simple collections that can be devoured in one sitting, or nibbled in bits to make it last a while.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixteen generations later, the same old winding roads and blazed trails throughout the three novels lead us all back home to nostalgic dishes and the worlds from which they came. Upon arrival at the old home place, we quickly find our favorite room: Mamas kitchen. The familiar sounds of pots and pans and aromas of old-time country cooking float in and out of our senses. Suddenly, visions of chocolate pies swirled high with meringues cooling on the kitchen window sill are as clear as yesterday. The sizzling sounds of Mama frying chicken on the old wood-stove remind us that her kitchen offered southern hospitality at its best. The trip down memory lane of days gone by rekindles the true meaning of Home Sweet Home. As we stop and reminisce, hot tears blur our vision and we ask ourselves where did all the years go?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pittsburgh region, while well known for steelmaking, was likewise an important glass manufacturing center in this country's history. This book provides detailed accounts of the region's glassmakers from the first factory dating to 1795 through 1910. Glassmaking started out modestly with small glasshouses in Pittsburgh and up the Monongahela River in New Geneva during the final few years of the 18th century. By the close of the 19th century, the Pittsburgh region was producing more than half of all domestic window glass and the lion's share of most other forms of glass in the United States. The original purpose of this manuscript was to assemble and record as accurately as possible the history of all of the glassworks and the glass manufacturers that operated them in Pittsburgh and the immediate surrounding region. This book was designed to be a reference guide for anyone who is interested in the history of glass in western Pennsylvania. The years companies were operating, where the glassworks were located, what types of glass and specific glass items did they make, and what marks did they use is just some of the information that can be found in this book. There are hundreds of individual companies and name changes listed in this volume. It contains as much information about each company that could practically be included. Even the most minor name or address change was recorded exactly as noted by contemporary sources. As much as possible, contemporary reference sources, such as city directories, early newspapers, maps, and journals were used to provide accurate and complete histories of the glasshouses. Generally, the better-known companies will have much more of their history available. However, every known glassmaker and glasshouse was included, regardless of how little information about them could be found. This book is intended to aid researchers in the determination of the age and the origin of marked pieces as well as narrowing down potential manufacturers of unmarked objects. The liberal reproduction of original advertisements and maps as well as the photographs of glass marks were included to complement and augment the narrative. The format of this book was established to facilitate its use as a reference guide.

Book excerpt: The Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina provide the early setting for Tales of Two Gails. Two friends, both named Gail, close for more than sixty years, share true stories of meeting challenges and overcoming hardships with stories of inspiration, faith, and humor. Gail Shepherd Diederich and Gail Kelly Lester began their friendship as tiny babies in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Grandparents for both provided support and love, guiding two little girls through family hardships. In the years that followed high school, the lives of the two Gails went in different directions; during decades of professional success, marriage, and raising children the two rarely saw each other but never lost contact. Their strong bond of friendship held them close in heart. Then e-mail came along; the distance between them was bridged, and the two friends were close again. One Gail was a news writer, and both enjoyed writing a good story. They took off on a late-in-life adventure, telling of the people and events that led them successfully through their lives. Their stories are told with humor, strong faith, and hopes that the stories will inspire others to move past negatives and find the positives in life.
