Although he received little formal education, he was an avid reader who studied his father's six books on Quakerism until their teachings became the foundation of his ideology. He was heavily influenced by the doctrines of his religion, particularly its stress on humanitarianism, compassion, and social responsibility. First introduced to poetry by a teacher, Whittier published his first poem in 1826 in William Lloyd Garrison's Newburyport Free Press. In June of 1833, he published the antislavery pamphlet Justice and Expediency, and from there dedicated the next twenty years of his life to the abolitionist cause. He was editor of The National Era; one of the most influential abolitionist newspapers in the North.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Snow-Bound: And Other Autobiographic Poems When Mr. Whittier, a few years before his death, supervised the definitive Riverside edition of his Poems, he classified them under several heads, among them being Poems Subjective and Reminiscent. In this group he placed Snow-Bound, Memories, "Ego," "The Barefoot Boy," "My Psalm," "In School-Days," Response, To my Sister, and others which were now disclosures of himself with the frankness of a Friend bearing testimony, now vivid recollections of the early years of his life; for as with poets in general, Memory often beckoned Imagination to come and sit in the cool shade of youth. Though this section of his Poems is thus purposely autobiographic in character, all of the divisions, "Personal," "Anti-Slavery," "Poems of Nature," "Songs of Labor and Reform," "Religious Poems," "Narrative and Legendary Poems," "Occasional Poems, "At Sundown," are characterized by that strong personal element which has endeared Whittier to readers because the man, genuinely humbly in spirit, was yet so at one with God, nature, and humanity that he spoke and sang clearly in his own voice, never in falsetto, always as one upon whom as on an instrument the spirit of truth played from the lowest note to the top of his compass. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Whittier's "Snow-Bound" A Study and Interpretation Snow-bound was written nearly half a century ago by John Greenleaf Whittier, the Quaker farmer-poet Of New England. Mr. Whittier was fifty-nine years 01 age when he wrote the poem, and in it he gives an account of the doings Of his own family, in his own home, during a certain stormy week in December when he was a boy probably not more than sixteen years of age. And where was this farm home located? Notice (see map) the narrow, crooked strip Of Massachusetts lying north of the Merrimac River after it crosses the New Hampshire line and turns to the eastward. This three-mile-wide strip, we are told by Mr. Pickard, was the poet's home during his entire life; and in its soil, in the Quaker cemetery at Amesbury, he, with the rest Of the snow-bound household, lies buried. This is the Whittier country, the snow-bound country When Mr. Whittier wrote the poem he was living at Amesbury, his home during the last fifty-six years Of his life. The farm home about which he was writing was only nine miles away, to the southeast, near a road run ning between Amesbury and Haverhill. On this farm the poet was born, and there he lived until he was twenty-nine years Old, when the family removed to Amesbury.
