Book excerpt: Paving the Way for an Open Service Market We live in an age when powerful communications technology is becoming available to everyone. From our home we can send and receive not only analogue voice, but also growing volumes of digital information and even intelligence in the form of agents. We are becoming increasingly mobile and are expecting the same level of connectivity in the home, in the office, and on the road. The regulatory and commercial environment in which we communicate is changing. The telecommunications market is becoming increasingly competitive. The Internet is erasing the borders between information technology and telecommunications. And the way we do business is ever more dominated by electronic exchanges of information. Is our technology ready for the open market of networks and services? Can we manage the growing complexity of computing and telecommunications technology and place it at the service of the people? The challenge for the research community is to develop the tools and techniques that will ultimately bring the full power of communications and information to everyone, in a way that everyone can easily use. The Sixth International Conference on Intelligence in Services and Networks (IS&N’99) is all about technology for paving the way to the open services market. Since the first IS&N conference in 1992 the focus of the IS&N program has continually shifted. We see existing technologies maturing while new ones emerge, but the bottom line has always been putting technology at the service of the people.

Book excerpt: This book is aimed at scientists, technologists, engineers, and undergraduate and graduate students involved in analytical and process biochemistry and biotechnology. It reviews the potentialities of light-emitting reaction associated with the sensor approach. The book introduces the concepts of sensors and biosensors and places bio- and chemi-luminescent sensors in the general context of biosensors. It then briefly describes luminescence phenomena and provides some basic knowledge necessary for understanding and exploiting light-emitting reactions. These luminescence reactions, important from an analytical standpoint, are described. Also the applications of bio- and chemi-luminescence which make use of immobilized reagents are explained. Finally, there is discussion of bio- and chemi-luminescent sensors, most of them including fiber optics.

Book excerpt: This volume contains papers presented at the fourth working conference on Communications and Multimedia Security (CMS'99), held in Leuven, Belgium from September 20-21, 1999. The Conference, arrangedjointly by Technical Committees 11 and 6 of the International Federation of Information Processing (IFIP), was organized by the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. The name "Communications and Multimedia Security" was used for the first time in 1995, when Reinhard Posch organized the first in this series of conferences in Graz, Austria, following up on the previously national (Austrian) IT Sicherheit conferences held in Klagenfurt (1993) and Vienna (1994). In 1996, CMS took place in Essen, Germany; in 1997 the conference moved to Athens, Greece. The Conference aims to provide an international forum for presentations and discussions on protocols and techniques for providing secure information networks. The contributions in this volume review the state-of the-art in communications and multimedia security, and discuss practical of topics experiences and new developments. They cover a wide spectrum inc1uding network security, web security, protocols for entity authentication and key agreement, protocols for mobile environments, applied cryptology, watermarking, smart cards, and legal aspects of digital signatures.

Book excerpt: The International Conference on Networking (ICN01) is the first conference in its series aimed at stimulating technical exchange in the emerging and important field of networking. On behalf of the International Advisory Committee, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to the International Conference on Networking. Integration of fixed and portable wirele ss access into IP and ATM networks presents a cost effective and efficient way to provide seamless end to end connectivity and ubiquitous access in a market where demands on Mobile and Cellular Networks have grown rapidly and predicted to generate billions of dollars in revenue. The deployment of broadband IP based technologies over Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) and integration of IP with broadband wireless access networks (BWANs) are becoming increasingly important. In addition, fixed core IP/ATM networks are constructed with recent move to IP/MPLS over DWDM. More over, mobility introduces further challenges in the area that have neither been fully understood nor resolved in the preceding network generation. This first Conference ICN01 has been very well perceived by the International networking community. A total of 300 papers from 39 countries were submitted, from which 168 have been accepted. Each paper has been reviewed by several members of the scientific Program Committee.
