Book excerpt: Everybody has fears in common and in this unique handwritten book, the author (an adult with developmental disabilities) battles his fears by listing more than 138 of them. He explores the depths of our most human emotion from small fears, like 'fear of bats' and 'fear of being different', to more complex fears like 'fear that if you put too much toilet paper in the toilet bowl it will run over and get all over the floor and on you and on someone else too, it would leak from upstairs to the next floor below'. This is a uniquely offbeat account of common worries and fears.

Download or read book Yvain written by Chretien de Troyes and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1987-09-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twelfth-century French poet Chrétien de Troyes is a major figure in European literature. His courtly romances fathered the Arthurian tradition and influenced countless other poets in England as well as on the continent. Yet because of the difficulty of capturing his swift-moving style in translation, English-speaking audiences are largely unfamiliar with the pleasures of reading his poems. Now, for the first time, an experienced translator of medieval verse who is himself a poet provides a translation of Chrétien’s major poem, Yvain, in verse that fully and satisfyingly captures the movement, the sense, and the spirit of the Old French original. Yvain is a courtly romance with a moral tenor; it is ironic and sometimes bawdy; the poetry is crisp and vivid. In addition, the psychological and the socio-historical perceptions of the poem are of profound literary and historical importance, for it evokes the emotions and the values of a flourishing, vibrant medieval past.

Download or read book George VI written by Sarah Bradford and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE DEFINITIVE BIOGRAPHY OF GEORGE VI, THE HERO OF THE KING'S SPEECH George VI reigned through taxing times. Acceding to the throne upon his brother's abdication, he was immediately confronted with the turmoil in European politics leading up to the Second World War, followed by a period of austerity, social transformation. George was unprepared for kingship, suffering from a stammer which could make public occasions very painful for him. Moreover he had grown up in the shadow of his brother, a man who had been idolized as no royal prince has been, before or since. However, as Sarah Bradford shows in this sympathetic biography, although George was not born to be king, he died a great one. 'A triumph . . . Sarah Bradford looks set to inherit Lady Longford's mantle as royal biographer supreme' Mail on Sunday 'Lucid, convincing and admirably fair . . . George VI has been fortunate in his biographer' Philip Ziegler 'Vivid, thorough and enjoyable' Independent

Book Synopsis St Katherine of Alexandria by : Jacqueline Jenkins
Download or read book St Katherine of Alexandria written by Jacqueline Jenkins and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medievalists from the US and Britain examine evidence of the third- century saint's popularity across Europe throughout the Middle Ages, and suggest some reasons for it. Prominent questions they address are whether she was popular because she was powerful, or powerful because she was popular; and what made her image so much more open than that of other saints to appropriation by such a variety of medieval saints. The ten essays are from international gatherings in Kalamazoo and Leeds in 1999. Distributed in the US by The David Brown Book Company. Book Synopsis The Cult of St Katherine of Alexandria in Late Medieval England by : Katherine J. Lewis
Download or read book The Cult of St Katherine of Alexandria in Late Medieval England written by Katherine J. Lewis and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2000 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cult of St Katherine of Alexandria enjoyed great popularity throughout the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, retaining a wide appeal right up to the Reformation; she appears in a wide variety of contexts, in association with concepts of royal and civic power, by the end of the period becoming identified as a British saint, and acting as a model of the ideal lay Christian and a paradigm of femininity and young womanhood. This study, the first full-scale interdisciplinary examination of a saint's cult in late medieval England, looks at the processes by which she came to have such a prominent place in the devotions of English men and women from across the wide social scale; using written and visual narratives of Katherine's life, in combination with documentary evidence provided by wills, inventories and gild returns, the author shows how devotees perceived and responded to her, and the various religious, social and cultural roles assigned to her. Dr KATHERINE J. LEWIS teaches at the University of Huddersfield.
