From art-car and golf-cart parades to the Valentine's Day Sex Tour at the San Francisco Zoo; from a festival that moons Amtrak to a town with its own language; from obsessed collectors of Pez, yo-yos, and bananas to kitschy theme motels and a man who built a three-storey mountain out of hay, adobe, and old paint. Download or read book Cloudbursts written by Thomas McGuane and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of Ninety-two in the Shade: Set in the seedy corners of Key West, the remote shore towns of the Bahamas, and the unforgiving landscape of Big Sky Country, a “uniformly brilliant” collection (The New York Times Book Review) of familial dysfunction, emotional failure, and American loneliness that celebrates the human ability to persist through life's absurdities For more than four decades, Thomas McGuane has been heralded as an unrivaled master of the short story. Now the arc of that achievement appears in one definitive volume—forty-five stories, including two new and six previously uncollected pieces. These are stories of people on the fringes of society, whose twisted pasts meddle with their chances for companionship, moving from the hilarious to the tragic and back again. “A master of the short story... Cloudbursts is clearly the product of a life's worth of thought and feeling and experience; it ought to be savored.” —The New York Times Book Review
Download or read book Gallatin Canyon written by Thomas McGuane and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of Ninety-two in the Shade and Cloudbursts—the stories of Gallatin Canyon are rich in the wit, compassion, and matchless language for which Thomas McGuane is celebrated. Set mostly in famed Big Sky Country, McGuane brings us an "astonishing" (The New York Times Book Review) collection in which place exerts the power of destiny. A boy makes a surprising discovery skating at night on Lake Michigan; an Irish clan in Massachusetts gather around their dying matriarch; a battered survivor of the glory days of Key West washes up on other shores. Several of the stories unfold in Big Sky country: a father tries to buy his adult son’s way out of virginity; a convict turns cowhand on a ranch; a couple makes a fateful drive through a perilous gorge. McGuane's people are seekers, beguiled by the land's beauty and myth, compelled by the fantasy of what a locale can offer, forced to reconcile dream and truth.

Download or read book The Nuclear Lion written by John Jagger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . . . human kind cannot bear very much reality. T. S. ELIOT, Four Quartets When I was a little child, I lived in an old and somewhat rickety house by the sea. When the winter wind blew, the house would shake and tremble, and cold drafts would whistle through cracks in the walls. You might have thought that lying in bed in a dark room on such cold, windy nights would have frightened me. But it had just the opposite effect: having known this en vironment since birth, I actually found the shaking of the house, the whistling of the wind, and the crashing of the sea to be comforting, and I was lulled to sleep by these familiar sounds. They signaled to me that all was right with the world and that the forces of nature were operating in the normal way. But I did have a problem. On the dimly lit landing of the staircase leading up to my bedroom, there was a large and dark picture of a male lion, sitting as such lions do with his massive paws in front of him and his head erect, turned slightly to the right, and staring straight out at you with yellow blazing eyes. I had great difficulty getting past that lion. Someone would have to hold my hand and take me up to bed, past the dreaded picture.

This book was released on 2020-02-27 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The String People is a collection of twenty-eight unforgettable short stories drawn from Dr. Anthony Paul Sterling’s imagination, mixed with other tales of the author’s life experiences. The title of the book and the first story “The String People” came from “when I was very young. My brother and I had only matches to make people that we played with. We were poor and couldn’t afford real toys. These string people became soldiers, cowboys, etc.” From the short story “My Bald Head:” “Early in life, at age 5 or 6, I told my Grandma Cheecha (Francis), who spoke only Sicilian, that I wanted to be unna Doctura, so I could listen to her heart and give her injections of insulin. She would laugh and hug me. I never forgot this woman who got off a boat from Sicily with her husband Paul and 22 children … The next major influence came when I arrived on the children’s cancer unit. What affected me was the number of bald heads seen in almost every bed; this meant that all of them had cancer and were on chemotherapy. I never got over this; I prayed, cried, and eventually shaved my head.”
