Book excerpt: The smoke concentration within the primary zone of an experimental combustor operating at pressures up to 20 atmospheres was determined with a technique using spectral radiance measurements. Exhaust smoke concentration was obtained from reflectance readings of stained filter paper. The primary zone smoke concentration was of the order of 100 to 1000 times greater than at the exhaust. The smoke oxidation rate obtained is compared with reported values for coal particles and seeded laboratory flames. Primary zone smoke concentration was shown to be related to exhaust smoke number and total radiance.

Book excerpt: This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) standardizes test equipment and procedures for the measurement of smoke emission from aircraft gas turbine engines. Tests have indicated that the practically achievable precision of the smoke number is within ±3 when the system is properly used as outlined herein. This procedure is not intended for in-flight testing, nor does it apply to engines operating in the afterburning mode. ARP1179 was originally developed in 1970 (with subsequent updates) as the measurement technique for Smoke Number (SN) that has been used as the basis of regulatory standards for ensuring that the exhaust plumes from aircraft engines are essentially non-visible. It has, and still does, serve this purpose.More recent concerns relate to the health and climate impacts of particulate matter emitted by aircraft engines. Particle size, number and mass are all seen as relevant parameters as is the issue of "volatility".The SAE E-31 Committee is currently using all its resources in developing a new ARP on the mass and number measurement of non-volatile particles at the exhaust of aircraft engines.Hence the Committee recommends keeping ARP1179 as it still serves its purpose of quantifying the visibility at the exhaust of aircraft engines; it does not recommend any revision of it.

Book excerpt: Cranfield International Symposium Series, Volume 10: Combustion in Advanced Gas Turbine Systems covers the proceedings of an International Propulsion Symposium, held at the College of Aeronautics in Cranfield in April 1967. The book focuses on the processes, methodologies, reactions, and transformations involved in chemical combustion. The selection first takes a look at the design considerations in advanced gas turbine combustion chambers, combustion in industrial gas turbines, and combustion development on the Rolls-Royce Spey engine. Discussions focus on mechanical condition, carbon-formation and exhaust smoke, system requirements, fuel oil ash deposition and corrosion, combustion-system design, performance requirements, types of primary zone, fuel injection, and combustion chamber types. The text then examines subsonic flow flameholder studies using a low pressure simulation technique; stabilization of hydrogen diffusion flames by flame-holders in supersonic flow at low stagnation temperatures; and augmentation systems for turbofan engines. The book takes a look at a consideration of the possible use of refractory ceramic materials for advanced combustion chamber design; cooling of flame tubes by steam injection; and combustion problems in the massive steam injection gas turbine. The selection is a valuable source of information for researchers interested in the process of combustion in advanced gas turbine systems.

Book excerpt: This volume documents the proceedings of the Symposium on Emissions from Continuous Combustion Systems that was held at the General Motors Research Laboratories, Warren, Michigan on September 27 and 28, 1971. This symposium was the fifteenth in an annual series presented by the Research Laboratories. Each symposium has covered a different technical discipline. To be selected as the theme of a symposium, the subject must be timely and of vital interest to General Motors as well as to the technical community at large. For each symposium, the practice is to solicit papers at the forefront of research from recognized authorities in the technical discipline of interest. Approximately sixty scientists and engineers from academic, government and industrial circles in this country and abroad are then invited to join about an equal number of General Motors technical personnel to discuss freely the commissioned papers. The technical portion of the meeting is supplemented by social functions at which ample time is afforded for informal exchanges of ideas amongst the participants. By such a direct interaction of a small and select group of informed participants, it is hoped to extend the boundaries of research in the selected technical field.

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the changes in soot mean diameter across the combustor and exhaust nozzle of a T63 gas turbine engine, and across an exhaust augmentor tube. D32 within the combustor varied between 0.16 and 0.25 microns, depending upon fuel composition. Data correlation was most successful in this location using an index of refraction of 1.95 -0.66i with sigma = 1.5. In the aft can location (ahead of the exhaust nozzle) D32 was between 0.35 and 0.45 microns, depending upon the fuel-air ratio. Increasing fuel-air ratios decreased D32, also in agreement with the results presented in reference 1. Using NAPC 9 high aromatic fuel, D32 increased across the exhaust nozzle (0.35 to 1.2 microns) and across the augmentor tube (1.2 to 1.5 = 1.9 microns). Malvern data were in good agreement with the results obtained using larger scattering angles. Keywords: Optical sizing of soot; Gas turbine combustors; Exhaust augmentor tubes. (JES).

Book excerpt: Lower pollutant emissions and broader multifuel flexibility are driving forces for advancing aircraft, vehicular, and industrial engine performance and versatility. Both are inherently connected with the design of the fuel injector and combustor system. The traditional concerns, improving durability and fuel economy over the life of the engine, remain additional requirements.**This volume offers a comprehensive treatment of modern practice aimed both at those in the field and newcomers interested in research and development for gas turbine combustors. Detailed description and assessment of a range of combustor design models and methods**Specification and evolution of fuels and fuel injectors**System models for fuel effects on engines and airframes**Evaluation of laser-based measurement techniques for combustor flow field studies
