Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Smith College Verse The pleasure that has gone to the making of this verse, and the joy that has gone to the compiling Of the book, will pass unnoticed in the reading Of it. Yet our end in preparing this small volume was not a purely selfish one. We felt that the alumna and friends of Smith College wanted such a collection, and to satisfy their desire the book is published. We make no claim other than that we have attempted to bring together the best Of the college verse which has come under our con sideration. Most of the selections have been published during the past twelve years in the Smith College Monthly. In a few instances verses have been re printed in other publications, to the courtesy of whose editors we are indebted for their appearance in these pages. The natural timidity felt by young authors in launching their first book is mitigated by the thought that this is the product Of the college rather than Of the indi vidual pen. And since it is distinctly a book Of college verse, by the standards Of such verse it is to be judged. It is not because the technique is remarkable, or the sub jcet matter unusual, or the phrasing excellent that the work was compiled. It was not to stand in the market-place shoulder to shoulder with nobler works Of art that this little book was sent forth. It was not for the sake of raising funds or glorifying the name Of Smith that such a project came into our heads. It was not to attract attention or to demand criticism or approbation that we launched this venture. But rather our purpose was to send, in collected and bound form, a record of verse endeared to the hearts Of Smith graduates, into their friendly midst. We feel sure that our purpose will be fulfilled, and that the end that was intended will be achieved; hence it is with no misgivings or humbleness of spirit that we pub lish this work. But at the same time we realize that, once published, our control over its destiny vanishes. It may take its way to the market-place, it may meet with rivalry and scorn. It may be battered by the worldly standards of literary excellence and filled by blows Of superior critics. That such may be its fate we half anticipate. We cannot hold it within those narrow confines for which it was intended, even should we wish to do so. We are sending it forth to stand upon its own feet, to walk or fall as the case may be; but we are sending it forth with such a good will and backed by the happiness of so many hours of loving work and care that we hope it may not utterly fail. Simple and unassuming as it is, there is, we hope, a genuineness and a sincerity about it which will endear it to all those who realize that it is the embodiment of the spirit of the college which it represents. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Smith College Monthly, Vol. 1: October, 1893 After this came the debates, two in number, the first on the theme, Was Crates the philosopher right, when, having met an ignorant boy, he administered a beating to his teacher? The second of a speculative sort: It is forbidden a stranger to mount the wall. A mounts the wall, hbut only to assist the citizens in repelling their enemies. Has A broken the law? The debates were very well conducted, and at the Close the master presented the successful contestants with valuable books as prizes. After the boys had gone I lingered to speak with the master, who was very willing to give me any information that I desired. He told me that his boys read Homer, Horace, Virgil and some of the great tragedians that he frequently picked out some knotty point in the lesson and set the boys to arguing for and against some view of it and that he ranked his pupils by their ability in this branch of study. Music he also taught, and geometry. But that, he said with a sigh, they do not like and will not learn. He made a specialty Of exercises in writing Greek verses, which was good news to me. But the pupils give by far the larger part of their time and atten tion to the preparation and presentation of such themes-as I have already mentioned, joined to much paraphrasing of fables, anecdotes, and so forth, to give fluency of speech. I have not yet decided with regard to my own course, but when I do, you may rest assured that I will send you word. Farewell. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian Association for American Studies Robert K. Martin Book Prize Analyzing slave narratives, emigration polemics, a murder trial, and black-authored fiction, Andrea Stone highlights the central role physical and mental health and well-being played in antebellum black literary constructions of selfhood. At a time when political and medical theorists emphasized black well-being in their arguments for or against slavery, African American men and women developed their own theories about what it means to be healthy and well in contexts of injury, illness, sexual abuse, disease, and disability. Such portrayals of the healthy black self in early black print culture created a nineteenth-century politics of well-being that spanned continents. Even in conditions of painful labor, severely limited resources, and physical and mental brutality, these writers counter stereotypes and circumstances by representing and claiming the totality of bodily existence. Publication of the paperback edition made possible by a Sustaining the Humanities through the American Rescue Plan grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Book excerpt: Marcus Gheeraerts’s portrait of a ’Persian lady’ - probably in fact an English lady in masquing costume - exemplifies the hybridity of early modern English culture. Her surrounding landscape and the embroidery on her gown are typically English; but her head-dress and slippers are decidedly exotic, the inscriptions beside her are Latin, and her creator was an ’incomer’ artist. She is emblematic of the early modern culture of exchange, both between England and its neighbours, and between Europe and the wider world. This volume presents fresh research into such early modern exchanges, exploring how new identities, subjectivities and artefacts were forged in dialogues and encounters between diverse cultures, nations and language communities. The early modern period was a time of creative interactions between cultures and disciplines, and accordingly this is a multidisciplinary volume, drawing together international experts in literature, history, modern and ancient languages and art history. It understands cultural exchange as encompassing both the geographical mobilities of travel and trade and the transmission of ideas across borders and between languages, as enabled by the new technology of print. Sites of exchange were located not only in distant and unfamiliar lands, but also in the bookseller’s shop and the scholar’s study. The volume also explores the productive and complex dialogues between early modern culture and the classical past. The types of exchanges discussed include the linguistic transactions of translation and imitation; interactions between cultural elites, such as monarchs, courtiers and diplomats; and the catalytic influences of particularly mobile or outward-looking individuals and groups. Ranging from the neo-Latin poetry of an English author to the plays of a nun in seventeenth-century New Spain, from royal portraits exchanged in diplomatic negotiations to travelling companions in the Ottoman Empire, the volume sheds new light
