Book excerpt: This story is about a man named Shep, Im not sure this is his Christian name but everybody calls him Shep. Shep has a horse named Beulah, we think she's called after an old girlfriend back East. Now this old horse and Shep are a lot alike always getting into trouble of some kind, one good thing about Beulah is she's very fast. Shep is a pretty good shot unfortunately he's also good at getting shot at, he has four bullet scars, one arrow scar plus a little bit of his left ear shot off, he has reddish blond hair, blue eyes, six feet tall and one hundred eight pounds, plus a slight limp from being thrown by Beulah to many times. One good thing is when she throws him she won't run off, she is more apt to come back and bite him, they make a good pair in one respect they're both ornery. Shep is a drifting cowboy he likes to gamble some; but is not very good at it, that is a reason he is still a cowboy. His last job that he had been was below Tucson and he and the foreman didn't see eye to eye on anything especially when it came to the bosses daughter Ella, she's about half wildcat and the other half tease. Nobody knows for sure if she likes either one of them, knowing she likes to see the good fight. Shep oh did I forget the foreman? His name is Sam Ivey, now Sam five foot ten inches he weighs two hundred pounds and solid as a rock though not a good fighter he was able to take a lot of punishment and he would be a good hand in any outfit. Shep finds itself with a strange turn of events in a beautiful mountain range, from a carefree cowboy to a purpose able life when he joins up with an old friend named Slim.

Now she serves up the most tantalizing novel of her career as an enterprising woman allies herself with a mysterious spy, only to be caught up in a torrid brew of treachery–and temptation.... SLIGHTLY SHADY From the moment the stranger burst into her antiquities shop in Rome, Lavinia Lake knew he was nothing but trouble. He said he was in pursuit of a killer. He swore he was only trying to save her. Yet Lavinia was convinced that Mr. Tobias March was bent instead on destroying her. When the self-described spy hustled her all the way back to England, Lavinia vowed she would find a way to repay him in full. She never dreamed that Mr. March had in fact been telling the truth, that he had been hired to track down a powerful villain. And just as his investigation was heating up, he found it complicated by the most ungovernable, exasperating–and slightly shady–woman he had ever met. Lavinia most certainly never dreamed they would meet again, forced into partnership under shocking circumstances–or that their fiery disputes would spark a sizzling desire as overwhelming as the danger they faced....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Crackling dialogue, gritty characters, a fierce, unblinking stare at acts of brutality.”—Anne Tyler, The New York Times Book Review. A brilliantly panoramic novel spanning a quarter-century of American life, John Gregory Dunne’s The Red White and Blue tells the story of California's high-profile Broderick family, a tale beginning in the tumult of the 1960s. The clan includes a billionaire San Francisco patriarch, his sons the celebrity priest and Hollywood screenwriter, and his daughter, wife to the brother of the American president. Rounding out the front-line cast is Leah Kaye, a politically radical lawyer once married to the screenwriter Jack Broderick, an ex-newspaperman and the book's narrator. The influence of wealth in American politics. A California agricultural strike. A South American election. The black-power movement. Hollywood movers and shakers. All of this and more is deftly navigated as Dunne sets his main characters and big-canvas forces in motion. Jack himself is pulled into the swirl, his ironic detachment proving insufficient bulwark against dramas that grow darker, more dangerous and more personal as Dunne’s epic unfolds. A robust, bitterly comic portrait of America in the Viet Nam era and after, with a storyline headed towards tragedy, The Red White and Blue — appearing here in digital format for the first time — is John Gregory Dunne at his most ambitious and far-seeing, his gaze sweeping from coast to coast and from decade to American decade.

Book excerpt: Three acclaimed novels plus collected short fiction by the New York Times–bestselling author of Rich Man, Poor Man. The Young Lions: Irwin Shaw’s New York Times–bestselling debut is widely considered one of the four great World War II novels, along with From Here to Eternity, The Naked and the Dead, and The Caine Mutiny. Ambitious in its scope and robust in its prose, this “masterpiece” is also deeply humanistic, presenting the reality of war as seen through the eyes of three ordinary soldiers: a Nazi sergeant, a Jewish American infantryman, and an idealistic urbanite from New York City (TheBoston Globe). Bread Upon the Waters: No good deed goes unpunished? The Strands are a happy family, though not without their financial struggles. When their daughter helps a mugging victim by bringing him home, he turns out to be a Wall Street lawyer whose gratitude is as boundless as his bank account. But with each successive “reward,” the Strand family moves farther away from the wealth of happiness they already possessed. Short Stories: Five Decades: Shaw’s prolific output of short stories appeared regularly in the pages of the New Yorker and Esquire for over half a century. These sixty-three stories include such iconic works as “The Eighty-Yard Run” and “The Girls in Their Summer Dresses.” The Troubled Air: Five employees of Clement Archer’s popular radio show are accused Communists. He will have to fire them to keep his show on the air. But it’s not a simple choice—whatever Archer decides, he won’t be able to keep his hands clean, in Shaw’s provocative classic about courage and morality at the height of McCarthyism.

Book excerpt: One of the great World War II novels, this New York Times–bestselling “masterpiece” captures the experiences of three very different soldiers (The Boston Globe). Standing alongside Norman Mailer’s The Naked and the Dead and James Jones’s From Here to Eternity, The Young Lions is one of the most powerful American novels to tackle the Second World War. Ambitious in its scope and robust in its prose, Irwin Shaw’s work is also deeply humanistic, presenting the reality of war as seen through the eyes of ordinary soldiers on both sides. The story follows the individual dramas—and ultimately intertwined destinies—of Christian Diestl, a Nazi sergeant; Noah Ackerman, a Jewish American infantryman; and Michael Whitacre, an idealistic urbanite from the New York theatrical world. Diestl first appears as a dashing ski instructor in Austria, mouthing his loyalty to Nazi ideals. As the war progresses, Diestl’s character continues to erode as he descends into savagery. Ackerman must endure domestic anti-Semitism and beatings in boot camp before proving himself in the European theater. Eventually, as part of the liberating army, he comes face-to-face with the unimaginable horrors of the death camps. Whitacre, trading cocktail parties for Molotov cocktails, confronts the barbarism of war, and in fighting simply to survive, finds his own capacity for heroism. Shaw’s sweeping narrative is at once vivid, exciting, and brutally realistic as well as poignant in its portrayal of the moral devastation and institutional insanity of war. Penned by a master storyteller at the height of his craft, The Young Lions stands the test of time as a classic novel of war and the human experience. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Irwin Shaw including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author’s estate.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Heather Graham recreates the tumultuous history of America’s least-known frontier, Florida, in a love story that burns with passion and truth. “I accepted you as payment on a gambling table because you’re incredibly beautiful. And I want you for the same reason.” His smoldering gaze claimed her long before a poker hand made her his. Tara Brent knew she could never escape this dark and brooding stranger who promised her safety, with a price: marriage—and life together in the lush, lethal wilderness of Florida. She didn’t even know his name, only the promise of passion, and refuge in his arms. Jarret McKenzie swept his ravishing bride away from New Orleans to his remote Florida plantation, determined to uncover the desperate secret from which she ran. But he couldn’t tell her of his own Seminole roots—or open her guarded heart—until his former commander, President Andrew Jackson, declared war on the Indians, and a powerful enemy from Tara’s past found his way to their door.
