Book excerpt: You may be wondering why a doctor would attempt to write a (supposedly) humorous book about cancer. Well, I have found that too many people, even other physicians, think that working with cancer patients is very serious business and must be pretty depressing work. However, my experience has been quite the opposite. The cancer patients with whom I have had the privilege to work with demonstrate humour, smiles and positivity every day. It helps them face their disease, cope with treatment and get on with their lives in a positive and meaningful way. They are definitely among the most grateful people I have ever met, and working with them has made me a happier and better person. Much of the practice of medicine is about relationships and, as we all know, relationships, at least good relationships, are often filled with humour. Within oncology (the specialty of cancer treatment), just like any other field of medicine, special relationships develop between patients and their physicians, and humour is often involved. That is definitely what I have observed in my clinical practice. This book is dedicated to cancer patients, as well as their families and friends. All the stories are based on my personal experiences and observations over 25 years of medical practice. Believe me, I am not a comedian or humourist - just ask my kids. I would never be able to make up such funny stories myself.

Book excerpt: Behind Those Smiles: Suffering But Smiling is a book that chronicles the author’s battle with pain and suffering —a life of pain, perhaps foretold by her childhood . She lost her father early, followed years later by her mother’s death, which thrust her into responsibility as a mother figure for her younger brothers early in her life. When she thought that her pains were all in the past, she was involved in a motor accident so ghastly that the doctors gave her no chance of survival. She survived —after a succession of miracles! The book leads us through these miracles in an enthralling tale of the triumph of hope over hopelessness, victory of mind over matter, and crucially, divinity’s supremacy in the affairs of man. Though the author’s smile may have faltered at some point, it never really disappeared. Indeed, she was suffering but smiling, and God gave her victory!

A classic ethnographic study of the interactions between paediatricians and parents of children thought to be neurologically handicapped. Strong used this work to systematize the often chaotic ideas of Erving Goffman, to explore the connections between micro and macro analysis in sociology and to reflect on the nature of medical practice in modern liberal societies. The book stands as a testament to Strong’s pursuit of methodological rigour in qualitative sociology.

Book excerpt: A Great Smile is the Window to the Soul Many people during their lifetimes will encounter issues with their teeth, whether they are people who crack or chip teeth playing sports or from other trauma, or people who have genetic disorders leading to teeth that cause them pain and anxiety. But it doesn't have to be that way. Cosmetic dentistry has a wider range of treatment options than most people think--from simple whitening procedures to full-mouth reconstruction with implants, veneers, crowns, and more. With so many options, figuring out which treatment works best for you can be a headache. Dr. Hugh Flax wrote A Smile Is Always in Style: How to Look Great and Feel Amazing for those who want to improve their smiles for health reasons, to build confidence, or for those who simply want to be happier with the person they see in the mirror. His hope is that whoever reads this book will learn the options they have with cosmetic dentistry so they can transform their lives forever.

Book excerpt: A pragmatic existential therapist exposes a suggestive underworld of clinical experience, not only disclosing direct experience of the erotization of the clinic, the erotization of the clinician, and the erotization of clinical confession, but also showing by example that these enchantments facilitate psychological healing if managed well. Addressing clinical and cultural concerns, the philosophically-minded dialogical therapist also offers a vigorous critique of the clinical nihilism that defines psychotherapeutic practice in the postmodern clinic.
