One significant characteristic of oil paint is its richness and depth of colour, something that is of particular interest to Nicholas Verrall. In this book, he discusses his working methods and the importance of colour, at the same time placing these issues within the general context of painting in oils, with all that this has to offer. Includes information, demonstrations and many inspirational finished paintings to help painters understand the value of colour in interpreting ideas with feeling and impact. It provides guidance on a wide range of skills, techniques and advice on subject matter and associated topics. Illustrated throughout. It shows how to use oils and create colourful, light and expressive pictures. Verrall is one of the UK's most respected contemporary figurative painters. It is presented new in paperback.

Book Synopsis Cubism and Futurism by : R. Bruce Elder
Download or read book Cubism and Futurism written by R. Bruce Elder and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2018-06-30 with total page 1075 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cubism and futurism were closely related movements that vied with each other in the economy of renown. Perception, dynamism, and the dynamism of perception—these were the issues that passed back and forth between the two. Cubism and Futurism: Spiritual Machines and the Cinematic Effect shows how movement became, in the traditional visual arts, a central factor with the advent of the cinema: gone were the days when an artwork strived merely to lift experience out the realm of change and flow. The cinema at this time was understood as an electric art, akin to X-rays, coloured light, and sonic energy. In this book, celebrated filmmaker and author Bruce Elder connects the dynamism that the cinema made an essential feature of the new artwork to the new science of electromagnetism. Cubism is a movement on the cusp of the transition from the Cartesian world of standardized Cartesian coordinates and interchangeable machine parts to a Galvanic world of continuities and flows. In contrast, futurism embraced completely the emerging electromagnetic view of reality. Cubism and Futurism examines the similarity and differences between the two movements’ engagement with the new science of energy and shows that the notion of energy made central to the new artwork by the cinema assumed a spiritual dimension, as the cinema itself came to be seen as a pneumatic machine.

Book Synopsis Scented Visions by : Christina Bradstreet
Download or read book Scented Visions written by Christina Bradstreet and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2022-06-29 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smell loomed large in cultural discourse in the late nineteenth century, thanks to the midcentury fear of miasma, the drive for sanitation reform, and the rise in artificial perfumery. Meanwhile, the science of olfaction remained largely mysterious, prompting an impulse to “see smell” and inspiring some artists to picture scent in order to better know and control it. This book recovers the substantive role of the olfactory in Pre-Raphaelite art and Aestheticism. Christina Bradstreet examines the iconography and symbolism of scent in nineteenth-century art and visual culture. Fragrant imagery in the work of John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Simeon Solomon, George Frederic Watts, Edward Burne-Jones, and others set the trend for the preoccupation with scent that informed swaths of British, European, and American art and design. Bradstreet’s rich analyses of paintings, perfume posters, and other works of visual culture demonstrate how artworks mirrored the “period nose” and intersected with the most clamorous debates of the day, including evolution, civilization, race, urban morality, mental health, faith, and the “woman question.” Beautifully illustrated and grounded in current practices in sensory history, Scented Visions presents both fresh readings of major works of art and a deeper understanding of the cultural history of nineteenth-century scent.
