Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Paul Phillips, not every day on the stream is an idyllic, spiritual experience. Small Streams and Daydreams is a compilation of entertaining essays on the 30 years he's spent fly-fishing throughout the United States and Canada. Unlike most writers in this genre, Phillips' back casts are not always flawless, his accuracy is not always unerring, and his footing not always assured. He gets lost, he falls, he loses equipment, his line gets entangled, and he's admittedly caught more "stick-fish" than most people have trout. With sharp wit and humor, Phillips' essays combine an abiding love for nature and for fly-fishing with the insight to see the pastime for what it is (an avocation) as well as what it is not (an emblem of distinction). While he waxes philosophical at times, at others he pokes great fun at his favorite target-himself. Phillips is a self-taught, self-described fly-fishing contrarian who eschews instructors, guides, lodges, sanctimonious peers, and matching the hatch. While his aim on stream is all too frequently awry, he can and does draw a steady bead on the grim-faced, the scolds, and the snobs whom he views as too prevalent, and too influential, in the contemporary literature on this wild, beautiful, and relaxing hobby.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daydreaming, our ability to give ‘to airy nothing a local habitation and a name’, remains one of the least understood aspects of human behaviour. As children we explore beyond the boundaries of our experience by projecting ourselves into the mysterious worlds outside our reach. As adolescents and adults we transcend frustration by dreams of achievement or escape, and use daydreaming as a way out of intolerable situations and to help survive boredom, drudgery or routine. In old age we turn back to happier memories as a relief from loneliness or frailty, or wistfully daydream about what we would do if we had our time over again. Why is it that we have the ability to alternate between fantasy and reality? Is it possible to have ambition or the ability to experiment, create or invent without the catalyst of fantasy? Are sexual fantasies an inherent part of human behaviour? Are they universal, healthy, destructive? Is daydreaming itself destructive? Or is it a force which facilitates change and which can even be harnessed to positive advantage? In this provocative book, originally published in 1975, the product of the previous twenty-five years of research, the author debates the nature and function of daydreaming in the light of his own experiments. As well as investigating what is a normal ‘fantasy-life’ and outlining patterns and types of daydreaming, he describes the role of daydreaming in schizophrenia and paranoia, examines the fantasies and hallucinations induced by drugs and also the nature of altered states of consciousness in Zen and Transcendental Meditation. Among the many topics covered, he explains how it is possible to help children enlarge their capacity for fantasy, how adults can make positive use of daydreaming and how people on the verge of disturbed behaviour are often unconscious of their own fantasies. Advances in scientific methods and new experimental techniques had made it possible at this time to monitor both conscious daydreaming and sub-conscious fantasies in a way not possible before. Professor Singer is one of the few scientists who have conducted substantial research in this area and it is his belief that the study of daydreaming and fantasy is of great importance if we are to understand the workings of the human mind.

Book excerpt: A Sojourn with Poetry is a book that leads the reader through those streets and roads less travelled within oneself, along those dark alleys that they probably wished they had never taken, or through the bright lanes of springtime blossoming’s of one’s life, as they relate their own experiences of life to the incidents and anecdotes described in the poems. Whether it is to take a walk in “A Walk in the Moonlight”, or travel experiences as in the “Camel” or “The Renaissance Encore”, or maybe even parting with a loved one as in “In the Wake of the Tragedy”, one can relate to these poems in so many ways, whether to just reminisce, or daydream, or maybe even to empathize or to live vicariously through their verses and stanzas. The poems combined with their illustrative art offer an ideal choice to take along on your trip or to spend some quiet time with yourself on a wintery evening or may be as an interesting choice for a young readers’ mind.
