Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis has sought to develop the field of small-molecule activation via the rational evolution of the principle of Frustrated Lewis Pairs. In the first instance, Chapter 1 serves to give a brief introduction into the field of small molecule activation by transition metals and FLPs, with a particular focus on the most challenging and impacting small molecule substrates. Chapter 2 [1] explores the concept of frustrated Lewis pairs and Lewis acidity in more detail and specifically, the structure-reactivity trends of boron Lewis acids in FLP systems with respect to the reversible binding of H2. The motivation for this research was to develop a series of linked phosphino-borinate FLPs with a view to generating systems that may activate hydrogen in a reversible manner, furthering the scope for this class of compounds in hydrogen storage applications. Chapter 3 [2] is a continuation on the previous theme; modifying the Lewis acid component of an FLP system to facilitate previously unseen transformations and address some of the issues of existing systems. More specifically, to address the lack of catalytic systems based on the FLP paradigm. To that end, a series of cationic phosphino-aryl(alky)oxymetallocenes (PAMs) was targeted with the hypothesis that these compounds would behave as transition metal-main group FLPs. Correspondingly, the limit of this semblance to the FLP was investigated in depth in Chapter 4 [3] by demonstrating that a wide range of the reactions reported for main group FLPs could be affected by PAM complexes. In addition, several other novel reactivity patterns were discovered that are so far unprecedented for the main group analogues. In the final chapter [4], the benefits of including the unique properties of the transition metals in PAM complexes is demonstrated by an in depth study into their utility as catalysts for the dehydrogenation of amine-boranes. The fact that this reaction is only known in a stoichiometric sense for the main group systems is testament to the success of the original thesis.

Book excerpt: Gold(I) and copper(I) imidazolium complexes were synthesized and probed for use as bulky Lewis acids in frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) with bulky phosphines and amines. Their reactivity with small molecules was investigated and the compounds were fully characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and X-ray crystallography. Secondly, a new methylene-linked boron-sulfur Lewis acid was synthesized. Its thermodynamic properties were determined and its reactivity with terminal and internal alkynes was demonstrated. Adducts and heterocycles of this boron-sulfur system were fully characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and X-ray crystallography. The application of these new systems for the activation of small molecules is described in this thesis.

Book excerpt: The last two decades have seen a renaissance in interest in the chemistry of the main group elements. In particular research on the metals of group 13 (aluminium, gallium, indium and thallium) has led to the synthesis and isolation of some very novel and unusual molecules, with implications for organometallic synthesis, new materials development, and with biological, medical and, environmental relevance. The Group 13 Metals Aluminium, Gallium, Indium and Thallium aims to cover new facts, developments and applications in the context of more general patterns of physical and chemical behaviour. Particular attention is paid to the main growth areas, including the chemistry of lower formal oxidation states, cluster chemistry, the investigation of solid oxides and hydroxides, advances in the formation of III-V and related compounds, the biological significance of Group 13 metal complexes, and the growing importance of the metals and their compounds in the mediation of organic reactions. Chapters cover: general features of the group 13 elements group 13 metals in the +3 oxidation state: simple inorganic compounds formal oxidation state +3: organometallic chemistry formal oxidation state +2: metal-metal bonded vs. mononuclear derivatives group 13 metals in the +1 oxidation state mixed or intermediate valence group 13 metal compounds aluminium and gallium clusters: metalloid clusters and their relation to the bulk phases, to naked clusters, and to nanoscaled materials simple and mixed metal oxides and hydroxides: solids with extended structures of different dimensionalities and porosities coordination and solution chemistry of the metals: biological, medical and, environmental relevance III-V and related semiconductor materials group 13 metal-mediated organic reactions The Group 13 Metals Aluminium, Gallium, Indium and Thallium provides a detailed, wide-ranging, and up-to-date review of the chemistry of this important group of metals. It will find a place on the bookshelves of practitioners, researchers and students working in inorganic, organometallic, and materials chemistry.

Chapters are ordered to reaction type, contain educational elements and deal with concepts illustrated by examples that cover the main developments. After a short introduction on polar organometallic chemistry and synthesis of early main group metal complexes, a variety of catalytic reactions are described, e.g. polymerization of alkenes, hydroamination and phosphination reactions, hydrosilylation, hydroboration and hydrogenation catalysis, as well as enantioselective and Lewis-acid catalysis. The book addresses organic chemists and researchers in industry interested in the state-of-the-art and new possibilities of early main group metal catalysis as well as newcomers to the field. Written by a team of leaders in the field, it is a very welcome addition to the area of main group metal chemistry, and to the field of catalysis.

Book excerpt: The series Topics in Current Chemistry Collections presents critical reviews from the journal Topics in Current Chemistry organized in topical volumes. The scope of coverage is all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field.
