It is the province of hospital architecture to provide for the collective treatment of sick and wounded persons, and to promote, as far as planning and construction of buildings can do so, their comfort and restoration to health. The excellence of a hospital does not consist in the proportions of its facade, or the profiles of its mouldings; it is to be sought for in the records of mortality and cure within its walls. From the preliminary studies to the last details of construction, the sanitary aspect of the problem should be uppermost in the mind of the designer. The following suggestions, while applicable to hospitals of any description, are more especially intended for those built on the "pavilion plan," of detached buildings of a single story, either entirely separated from one another, or connected by means of open or partially enclosed corridors. From the architect's point of view the planning of a hospital resolves itself into three parts: (i) the general arrangement of the buildings on the site; (2) the planning of the individual members of the group; and (3) the design of details, including methods and materials of construction, and the heating, ventilating, and plumbing systems.
