Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the "archetypal" image that comes to mind when one thinks of an infinite graph? What with a finite graph - when it is thought of as opposed to an infinite one? What structural elements are typical for either - by their presence or absence - yet provide a common ground for both? In planning the workshop on "Cycles and Rays" it had been intended from the outset to bring infinite graphs to the fore as much as possible. There never had been a graph theoretical meeting in which infinite graphs were more than "also rans", let alone one in which they were a central theme. In part, this is a matter of fashion, inasmuch as they are perceived as not readily lending themselves to applications, in part it is a matter of psychology stemming from the insecurity that many graph theorists feel in the face of set theory - on which infinite graph theory relies to a considerable extent. The result is that by and large, infinite graph theorists know what is happening in finite graphs but not conversely. Lack of knowledge about infinite graph theory can also be found in authoritative l sources. For example, a recent edition (1987) of a major mathematical encyclopaedia proposes to ". . . restrict [itself] to finite graphs, since only they give a typical theory". If anything, the reverse is true, and needless to say, the graph theoretical world knows better. One may wonder, however, by how much.

Book Synopsis Graph Theory and Decomposition by : Jomon Kottarathil
Download or read book Graph Theory and Decomposition written by Jomon Kottarathil and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-04-10 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book Graph Theory and Decomposition covers major areas of the decomposition of graphs. It is a three-part reference book with nine chapters that is aimed at enthusiasts as well as research scholars. It comprehends historical evolution and basic terminologies, and it deliberates on decompositions into cyclic graphs, such as cycle, digraph, and K4-e decompositions. In addition to determining the pendant number of graphs, it has a discourse on decomposing a graph into acyclic graphs like general tree, path, and star decompositions. It summarises another recently developed decomposition technique, which decomposes the given graph into multiple types of subgraphs. Major conjectures on graph decompositions are elaborately discussed. It alludes to a comprehensive bibliography that includes over 500 monographs and journal articles. It includes more than 500 theorems, around 100 definitions, 56 conjectures, 40 open problems, and an algorithm. The index section facilitates easy access to definitions, major conjectures, and named theorems. Thus, the book Graph Theory and Decomposition will be a great asset, we hope, in the field of decompositions of graphs and will serve as a reference book for all who are passionate about graph theory.
Book Synopsis Quo Vadis, Graph Theory? by : J. Gimbel

Book excerpt: Graph Theory (as a recognized discipline) is a relative newcomer to Mathematics. The first formal paper is found in the work of Leonhard Euler in 1736. In recent years the subject has grown so rapidly that in today's literature, graph theory papers abound with new mathematical developments and significant applications. As with any academic field, it is good to step back occasionally and ask Where is all this activity taking us?, What are the outstanding fundamental problems?, What are the next important steps to take?. In short, Quo Vadis, Graph Theory?. The contributors to this volume have together provided a comprehensive reference source for future directions and open questions in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graphs and Networks A unique blend of graph theory and network science for mathematicians and data science professionals alike. Featuring topics such as minors, connectomes, trees, distance, spectral graph theory, similarity, centrality, small-world networks, scale-free networks, graph algorithms, Eulerian circuits, Hamiltonian cycles, coloring, higher connectivity, planar graphs, flows, matchings, and coverings, Graphs and Networks contains modern applications for graph theorists and a host of useful theorems for network scientists. The book begins with applications to biology and the social and political sciences and gradually takes a more theoretical direction toward graph structure theory and combinatorial optimization. A background in linear algebra, probability, and statistics provides the proper frame of reference. Graphs and Networks also features: Applications to neuroscience, climate science, and the social and political sciences A research outlook integrated directly into the narrative with ideas for students interested in pursuing research projects at all levels A large selection of primary and secondary sources for further reading Historical notes that hint at the passion and excitement behind the discoveries Practice problems that reinforce the concepts and encourage further investigation and independent work
Book Synopsis The Julius Petersen Graph Theory Centennial by : L.D. Andersen
Download or read book The Julius Petersen Graph Theory Centennial written by L.D. Andersen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-06 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julius Petersen's paper, Die Theorie der regulären graphs in Acta Mathematica, volume 15 (1891), stands at the beginning of graph theory as we know it today. The Danish group of graph theorists decided in 1985 to mark the 150th birthday of Petersen in 1989, as well as the centennial of his paper. It was felt that the occasion called for a presentation of Petersen's famous paper in its historical context and, in a wider sense, of Petersen's life and work as a whole. However, the readily available information about Julius Petersen amounted to very little (not even a full bibliography existed) and virtually nothing was known about the circumstances that led him to write his famous paper. The study of Petersen's life and work has resulted in several papers, in particular a biography, a bibliography, an annotated edition of the letters surrounding Petersen's paper of 1891, an analysis of Petersen's paper and an annotated edition of parts of Petersen's correspondence with Sylow on Galois theory. The first four of these papers, together with a survey of matching theory, form the first part of this book. In addition to these five special papers, there are papers submitted in the celebration of the Petersen centennial.
Download or read book Graph Theory written by Ralucca Gera and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first in a series of volumes, which provide an extensive overview of conjectures and open problems in graph theory. The readership of each volume is geared toward graduate students who may be searching for research ideas. However, the well-established mathematician will find the overall exposition engaging and enlightening. Each chapter, presented in a story-telling style, includes more than a simple collection of results on a particular topic. Each contribution conveys the history, evolution, and techniques used to solve the authors’ favorite conjectures and open problems, enhancing the reader’s overall comprehension and enthusiasm. The editors were inspired to create these volumes by the popular and well attended special sessions, entitled “My Favorite Graph Theory Conjectures," which were held at the winter AMS/MAA Joint Meeting in Boston (January, 2012), the SIAM Conference on Discrete Mathematics in Halifax (June,2012) and the winter AMS/MAA Joint meeting in Baltimore(January, 2014). In an effort to aid in the creation and dissemination of open problems, which is crucial to the growth and development of a field, the editors requested the speakers, as well as notable experts in graph theory, to contribute to these volumes.
Book Synopsis Graph Theory and Combinatorics 1988 by : B. Bollobás
Download or read book Graph Theory and Combinatorics 1988 written by B. Bollobás and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1989-07-01 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combinatorics has not been an established branch of mathematics for very long: the last quarter of a century has seen an explosive growth in the subject. This growth has been largely due to the doyen of combinatorialists, Paul Erdős, whose penetrating insight and insatiable curiosity has provided a huge stimulus for workers in the field. There is hardly any branch of combinatorics that has not been greatly enriched by his ideas. This volume is dedicated to Paul Erdős on the occasion of his seventy-fifth birthday.
