Book excerpt: The growth of triangular-shaped delaminations bordered by matrix cracks, defined herein as "compound delaminations", occurring at the free edges of [±15n]s and [±15n0n]s laminates in static tensile loading was investigated. This triangular compound delamination is the first macroscopic damage observed. Failure of the laminates occurs by unstable growth of these delaminations. The experimental study involved the manufacture of specimens with Teflon implants to create an initial delamination configuration with the delamination oriented at 90° to the matrix crack. The delamination front was monitored using strain gages and X-ray radiographs. Growth was observed to occur at the delamination front near the free edge region with no growth at the matrix crack front resulting in the same configuration as observed in originally unflawed specimens. A three-dimensional displacement-based finite element model of the delaminated region was created and the equivalent domain integral was used to determine the energy release rate at the delamination and matrix crack fronts. The energy release rate was predicted to be highest at the intersection of the delamination and the free edge and was lowest at the intersection of the delamination and the matrix crack. The peak energy release rate predicted at the matrix crack front was smaller than that at the delamination front. Growth was simulated in the model by tilting the delamination front about the matrix crack front. The maximum energy release rate along the delamination dropped and became more uniform as the delamination was tilted. These results indicate that the stable delamination configuration observed is formed by the growth of the delamination front at the free edge region in regions of high energy release rate in preference to the growth of the matrix crack resulting in a curved delamination contour. The overall decrease in energy release rate associated with this delamination growth indicates that the resulting curved delamination is a more stable configuration. The failure process in these specimens involves the formation of these stable delaminations, followed by secondary cracking in the plies adjacent to the delamination, and lastly final failure via unstable growth of the entire triangular region to the ends of the specimen.

Book excerpt: Delamination suppression by the efficient placement of film adhesive interlayers in [±157/07]s AS4/3501-6 graphite/epoxy laminates was investigated. Efficiency was achieved by placing film adhesive in the form of strips at the free edge at delamination critical interfaces only. Five types of laminates were tested; the first type were control specimens without film adhesive, the second type had a full-width ply of film adhesive, and the remaining three types had strips of film adhesive 3 mm, 6 mm and 9 mm wide, at the free edges of the laminate. All film adhesive was placed at the +15°/-15° interface. For all the specimens with film adhesive, the delamination initiation load was about 50% higher than for the control specimens. The width of the film adhesive strips, up to manufacturable sizes, did not affect the suppression of delamination. The specimens with film adhesive also failed at stresses which were about 40% higher than the control specimens. Again, no significant difference was observed between the fracture stresses of specimens with different widths of film adhesive. An analysis was developed to predict the interlaminar stresses at the dropoff and showed that these interlaminar stresses at the dropoff are negligibly small as compared to the interlaminar stresses at the free edge of the specimen. Specimens with film adhesive plies at the +15°/-15° interface and delamination implants of width 3 mm, 6 mm, and 9 mm at the free edge at the +15°/FA interface were tested to examine the effect of film adhesive on growth of delamination Specimens with 6 mm and 9 mm wide delamination implants showed delamination behavior similar to the control specimens, indicating that the film adhesive was not capable of suppressing the growth of delamination. The behavior of specimens with 3 mm wide delamination implants, however, conformed to that of the specimens with film adhesive. This indicates the possibility of the existence of a critical delamination size necessary for growth to occur.

Book excerpt: The effect of the inclusion of film adhesive interlayers on the progression of damage and final failure load of simply-supported graphite/epoxy beam-columns was investigated. This loading configuration results in a gradient stress field. Two basic laminates made of AS4/3501-6 graphite/epoxy, [±45/0/904]4s and [(+452/-452/0)2/905]2S, were chosen based on previous results. FM-300M film adhesive layers were placed at the outermost 0/90 ply interface which delaminated under static loading in laminates without the film adhesive interlayer:. In these specimens, matrix cracks occur in the 90° plies and are connected by delaminations at the interfaces of the 900 effective ply and the neighboring plies leading eventually to failure mainly via the delamination mechanism. When the film adhesive interlayer is inserted at these interfaces, the delamination at the interface is totally suppressed or at least significantly delayed and inhibited. The final failure is therefore dominated by in-plane mechanisms in the major load-carrying plies resulting in an increase in the ultimate load carrying capability of these specimens by up to 90% over those specimens without the interlayers. After accounting for the increase in bending stiffness due to the increased thickness, an increase of up to 50% in load-carrying capability can still be attributed to the presence of the interlayers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The progression of damage in graphite/epoxy in which failure is induced by delamination has three stages: initiation, growth, and final failure. The latter two stages, growth and final failure, were experimentally and analytically studied. Laminates were constructed from AS4/3501-6 unidirectional prepreg tape and A370-5H/3501-6 prepreg fabric. Specimens were tested in the virgin state and with various degrees of in-plane and out-of-plane damage inserted at the critical interfaces and plies. Delamination growth was observed to occur in short dynamic sputs. An associated split in a neighboring ply along the fiber angle was seen to grow concurrently with the delamination and act as a boundary. Modifications were made to strain energy release rate models in an attempt to correlate delamination growth data. Nonetheless, satisfactory correlation was not achieved. The close interaction of the in-plane damage mode with the delamination, an out-of-plane damage mode, suggests that it is possible for one damage mode to inhibit or promote another as observed in several specimens. This interaction should be studied in future work. Final failure strength is a function of both the residual in-plane strength of the delaminated sublaminates and of the stress at which the laminate undergoes significant delamination growth and thus can be predicted once the delamination and in-plane damage state is known. KEYWORDS: Composites, fracture, delamination, strain energy release rate, angle ply split.
