Book Synopsis Masculinities in Polish, Czech and Slovak Cinema by : Ewa Mazierska
Download or read book Masculinities in Polish, Czech and Slovak Cinema written by Ewa Mazierska and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2008 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender, especially masculinity, is a perspective rarely applied in discourses on cinema of Eastern/Central Europe. Masculinities in Polish, Czech and Slovak Cinema exposes an English-speaking audience to a large proportion of this region's cinema that previously remained unknown, focusing on the relationship between representation of masculinity and nationality in the films of two and later three countries: Poland, Czechoslovakia/the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The objective of the book is to discuss the main types of men populating Polish, Czech and Slovak films: that of soldier, father, heterosexual and homosexual lover, against a rich political, social and cultural background. Czech, Slovak and Polish cinema appear to provide excellent material for comparison as they were produced in neighbouring countries which for over forty years endured a similar political system - state socialism.

Book Synopsis Modern Slovak Prose by : Robert B Pynsent
Download or read book Modern Slovak Prose written by Robert B Pynsent and published by Springer. This book was released on 1990-07-23 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Slovak Prose is a collection of essays based on papers delivered at a symposium at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies. Although few major Slovak writers published during the 1970s 'normalisation' period after the Warsaw Pact intervention, Slovak literature did not stagnate like Czech literature. The essays in this volume cover the whole period from the death throes of socialist realism to the lively, sophisticated, cosmopolitan fiction of the late 1970s and 1980s. The cut-off date is 1988. All the prose writers considered important by the Slovaks themselves and by non-slovak scholars are covered: Tatarka, Jaros, Johan Ides, Ballek, Bednr, Dusek and so forth. The volume contains a survey introduction to Slovak fiction from the 1950s to the present. This book is the first to assess an area of east central European culture which has been virtually ignored in the West.
Download or read book Slovak Flashcards written by Flashcardo and published by Flashcardo. This book was released on with total page 9269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. It is ideal for beginners and intermediate learners to acquire some of the most important initial words that make up the majority of everyday conversation. Various features like bidirectional listing make this flashcard ebook the perfect tool on your ebook reader to boost your language skills. This ebook is split into 4 chapters and contains a total of around 2000 vocabularies which you can also find on our website. Each of the words covers two pages. Page one represents the question in the form of the vocabulary you should translate. Page two delivers the answer with translation and additional information for that word if needed. To learn the vocabularies, simply go from page to page and study the words one by one. The 4 chapters in the book contain 2 sets of vocabularies, once learned from English to Slovak (chapter 1 and 2), and after that from Slovak to English (chapter 3 and 4). Within that, the first chapter has vocabularies ordered by topic whilest the second chapter has 1000 of the most common vocabularies you need to learn ordered by how often they are used in daily conversations. In addition to using this ebook, you can also go to our website and use the flashcards there to learn and test yourself. The most important part of using flashcards successfully is to use them daily. Studying 100 words a day every day of a week will have a much bigger impact than studying 700 words once a week. Once you know most words in a chapter, write down the ones you still have trouble with and concentrate on those few words several times a day. Once you have moved on to a later chapter, it is also good practice to come back to early chapters from time to time to make sure the easier words are still in your memory. Over time, you will figure out what works best for you. Good luck!

Book excerpt: The Handbook of Polish, Czech, and Slovak Holocaust Fiction aims to increase the visibility and show the versatility of works from East-Central European countries. It is the first encyclopedic work to bridge the gap between the literary production of countries that are considered to be main sites of the Holocaust and their recognition in international academic and public discourse. It contains over 100 entries offering not only facts about the content and motifs but also pointing out the characteristic fictional features of each work and its meaning for academic discourse and wider reception in the country of origin and abroad. The publication will appeal to the academic and broader public interested in the representation of the Holocaust, anti-Semitism, and World War II in literature and the arts. Besides prose, it also considers poetry and theatrical plays from 1943 through 2018. An introduction to the historical events and cultural developments in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Czech, and Slovak Republic, and their impact on the artistic output helps to contextualise the motif changes and fictional strategies that authors have been applying for decades. The publication is the result of long-term scholarly cooperation of specialists from four countries and several dozen academic centres.
