Book excerpt: Fluid-Solid Interaction Dynamics: Theory, Variational Principles, Numerical Methods and Applications gives a comprehensive accounting of fluid-solid interaction dynamics, including theory, numerical methods and their solutions for various FSI problems in engineering. The title provides the fundamental theories, methodologies and results developed in the application of FSI dynamics. Four numerical approaches that can be used with almost all integrated FSI systems in engineering are presented. Methods are linked with examples to illustrate results. In addition, numerical results are compared with available experiments or numerical data in order to demonstrate the accuracy of the approaches and their value to engineering applications. The title gives readers the state-of-the-art in theory, variational principles, numerical modeling and applications for fluid-solid interaction dynamics. Readers will be able to independently formulate models to solve their engineering FSI problems using information from this book. - Presents the state-of-the-art in fluid-solid interaction dynamics, providing theory, method and results - Takes an integrated approach to formulate, model and simulate FSI problems in engineering - Illustrates results with concrete examples - Gives four numerical approaches and related theories that are suitable for almost all integrated FSI systems - Provides the necessary information for bench scientists to independently formulate, model, and solve physical FSI problems in engineering

The field of loss prevention is, and continues to be, of supreme importance to countless companies, municipalities and governments around the world, and Lees' is a detailed reference to defending against hazards. Recognized as the standard work for chemical and process engineering safety professionals, it provides the most complete collection of information on the theory, practice, design elements, equipment, regulations and laws covering the field of process safety. An entire library of alternative books (and cross-referencing systems) would be needed to replace or improve upon it, but everything of importance to safety professionals, engineers and managers can be found in this all-encompassing three volume reference instead. - The process safety encyclopedia, trusted worldwide for over 30 years - Now available in print and online, to aid searchability and portability - Over 3,600 print pages cover the full scope of process safety and loss prevention, compiling theory, practice, standards, legislation, case studies and lessons learned in one resource as opposed to multiple sources

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of liquid sloshing in moving or stationary containers remains of great concern to aerospace, civil, and nuclear engineers; physicists; designers of road tankers and ship tankers; and mathematicians. Beginning with the fundamentals of liquid sloshing theory, this book takes the reader systematically from basic theory to advanced analytical and experimental results in a self-contained and coherent format. The book is divided into four sections. Part I deals with the theory of linear liquid sloshing dynamics; Part II addresses the nonlinear theory of liquid sloshing dynamics, Faraday waves, and sloshing impacts; Part III presents the problem of linear and nonlinear interaction of liquid sloshing dynamics with elastic containers and supported structures; and Part IV considers the fluid dynamics in spinning containers and microgravity sloshing. This book will be invaluable to researchers and graduate students in mechanical and aeronautical engineering, designers of liquid containers, and applied mathematicians.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vibration control and mitigation is a fundamental component of structural design. The incorporation of a fluid into a vibrating structure creates complex fluid-structure interactions. Fluids with unconstrained surfaces are free to slosh and develop periodic motions which can couple with and amplify existing structural modes of vibration, potentially exceeding force limits. For this reason, the reduction and control of vibration in a fluid-structure system is pivotal in the design of many systems such as spacecraft and fluid transport devices. This thesis explores a new method of vibration mitigation for fluid-structure systems, continuing work by NASA Marshal Space Flight Center. The MSFC concept is an air volume damper which functions as a tuned vibration absorber by leveraging existing fluid mass in an additional degree of freedom. The work contained in this thesis covers development of analytical and numerical models of the new fluid-structure-damper system in an effort to understand and control the system dynamics. A small scale testing apparatus was constructed to measure the system response under sinusoidal excitation for three cases; no damper, fixed damper, and free damper. A 9% reduction in the test tank motion was observed at the coupled resonance frequency when the damper was free to oscillate compared to the fixed damper case.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing size and complexity of new structural forces in engineering have made it necessary for designers to be aware of their dynamic behaviour. Dynamics is a subject which has traditionally been poorly taught in most engineering courses. This book was conceived as a way of providing engineers with a deeper knowledge of dynamic analysis and of indicating to them how some of the new vibrations problems can be solved. The authors start from basic principles to end up with the latest random vibration applications. The book originated 1n a week course given annually by the authors at the Computational Mechanics Centre, Ashurst Lodge, Southampton, England. Special care was taken to ensure continuity in the text and notations. Southampton 1984 CONTENTS Page Foreword Chapter 1 Introduction to Vibration 1. Introductory Remarks 1 2.
