Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a collection of personal essays that are “both rip-roaringly funny and sentimental, drawing natural (and justified) comparisons to David Sedaris and David Rakoff” (Esquire), longtime recording artist and actor Sam Harris recounts stories of friendship, love, celebrity, and growing up and getting sober. In sixteen brilliantly observed true stories, Sam Harris emerges as a natural humorist in league with David Sedaris, Chelsea Handler, Carrie Fisher, and Steve Martin, but with a voice uniquely his own. Praised by the Chicago Sun-Times for his “manic, witty commentary,” and with a storytelling talent The New York Times calls “New Yorker– worthy,” he puts a comedic spin on full-disclosure episodes from his own colorful life. In “I Feel, You Feel” he opens for Aretha Franklin during a blizzard. “Promises” is a front-row account of Liza Minnelli’s infamous wedding to “the man whose name shall go unmentioned.” In “The Zoo Story” Harris desperately searches for a common bond with his rough-and-tumble four-year-old son. What better place to find painfully funny material than in growing up gay, gifted, and ambitious in the heart of the Bible belt? And that’s just the first cut: From partying to parenting, from Sunday school to getting sober, these slices of Ham will have you laughing and wiping away salty tears in equal measure with their universal and down-to-earth appeal. After all, there’s a little ham in all of us.

Book excerpt: Crossing class and color lines, and spanning the nation (Montana has its huckleberry, Pennsylvania its shoofly, and Mississippi its sweet potato), pie -- real, homemade pie -- has meaning for all of us. But in today's treadmill, take-out world -- our fast-food nation -- does pie still have a place? As she traveled across the United States in an old Volvo named Betty, Pascale Le Draoulec discovered how merely mentioning homemade pie to strangers made faces soften, shoulders relax, and memories come wafting back. Rambling from town to town with Le Draoulec, you'll meet the famous, and sometimes infamous, pie makers who share their stories and recipes, and find out how a quest for pie can lead to something else entirely.

Book excerpt: In a lively collection of feature obituaries and related news stories, longtime newspaper reporter George Hesselberg celebrates life, sharing the most fascinating stories that came from decades of covering the obit and public safety beats. In more than forty years at the Wisconsin State Journal, Hesselberg frequently found himself writing about fatal accidents, crime investigations, and the deaths of the wealthy, famous, or notorious. But he was most drawn to the curious, the unknown, and the unsung—the deaths that normally wouldn’t make much of a splash, if any mention at all, in the news columns of a daily paper. Digging deeper, he uncovered the extraordinary among the ordinary, memorializing the lives of a sword designer, a radio villain, a pioneering female detective, a homeless woman who spoke fluent French, a beloved classroom tarantula, and many more. Their stories are alternately amusing, sad, surprising, and profound. Together they speak to a shared human experience and inspire us to see the people around us with new eyes, valuing the lives while they are still being lived.

In the first part of the book the poems and etchings coalesce to form what the author calls a family portrait of grace and faith, representing the fruit of a process of biblical study and reflection, which will be of interest to both the lay person and pastor in his or her preparations for teaching and preaching. In the second section of the book the author provides a variety of poems disclosing the dynamics of life in its multiplicity of patterns and expressions. Together the two sections seek to express the grace of God in the commonalities of life.

Book excerpt: It is impossible to capture the essence of a man in a simple recount of his life. Likewise, it would be equally impossible to reveal his trials, tribulations, and accomplishments exclusively through poetry. But together it may be possible to capture enough of a mans soul to keep him alive in the hearts of his audience for all of time. In his collection Slices of Life: A Selection of Short Stories and Poems, author Michael Patrick Mullaley seeks to capture the full dimensionality of his existence. Through a conglomeration of memoir, poetry, and prose, Mullaley challenges the limitations of written expression and weaves a totality of insight into not only his own being, but also some deeper aspects of the human condition as a whole, exploring both weighty questions and everyday pains and pleasures. The Cedar Chair explores a moving relationship between an inmate and a little girl, and many of the stories feature a core struggle, such as that of the older runner in All the Way. Some of his poems appeal to a cerebral nature, such The Contender, while others appeal to the senses, as in Feelings. A thought-provoking collection of prose and poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, Slices of Life captures the depths of Mullaleys soul and considers questions of human nature.

This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An empowering guide that will show you how to shed the myth of the “work-life balance” by merging the seven key components that make up your life to attain harmony and whole-life success “All of us have Seven Slices in our lives: our Family Slice, our Professional Slice, our Personal Slice, our Physical Slice, our Intellectual Slice, our Emotional Slice, and our Spiritual Slice. These all need to be served in some fashion—and in serving them, they, in turn, serve us.” This relatively simple but profoundly critical concept is at the heart of the method executive coach David McNeff has used to transform the lives and careers of his clients. It begins with two important facts: 1) stress happens—you can’t avoid it; and 2) your existence is composed of far more than “work” and “life.” Too often, we divide our lives into those two general categories, but we’re all a lot more complex and our lives are richer than that. By being clear and mindful of all aspects of your life—the Seven Slices—you’ll be more likely to find inner harmony when stress impacts one of them. In The Work-Life Balance Myth, McNeff takes you on a deep dive into each of the Seven Slices, explaining the components of each Slice, signs that you may not be attending to each Slice in a healthy way, and hands-on methods for accessing an underserved Slice. The Work-Life Balance Myth won’t make your life perfect—no one can do that, and you shouldn’t trust anyone who makes that promise. What this book will do is provide you with proven new ways of framing your life, seeing stress for what it is, and vastly improving your ability to navigate the emotional challenges that will inevitably arise in a way that serves your Seven Slices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Creative Mind came to me while driving around Wausau one day and wondering where it all came from, and where will it go, like great mysteries in life I shall never know. At that point I got off the road before I had an accident. I pulled in the parking lot of Pick N Save on Bridge St. and started writing. By that time I always had pen and paper with me. My memory isn’t that good. This poem also won an Editor’s Choice Award from Poetry.Com. Aunt Laura’s Wine Cellar also won Editor’s Choice from Poetry.com. I started writing this one about an upcoming family reunion and it just sort of became Aunt Laura’s. There really was an Aunt Laura and yes she really did have a wine cellar. This is one of those things that became a part of our family’s history. I shared it at the reunion and it brought back a lot of great memories. It also seems I wasn’t the only one to find an excuse to go downstairs to “get something” for Aunt Laura. Of course she knew what we were up to but we think she was flattered by the attention too. Then there was cousin Karen who said “hey wait a minute guys, I was never in Aunt Laura’s wine cellar, where was it?” Well sorry Karen. It seems you were the only one never in it. Geeze that’s really too bad. Aunt Laura has been passed on for some time now but oh what memories she left us with. Thank you Aunt Laura. I was getting to know more about Ginger Hartman and realized how much she had endured in life and yet survived. My first poem was basically a response to her poems and life and to prove that “hey. I can write one too.” Well I did and haven’t stopped. Perhaps I never will. The first poem was entitled How the Hell Did You Do It? It’s a bit of an unusual name but the words bare out an explanation. I wrote a few more about her, about her and me, about myself and then about many other people, places and things. Without her poems I never would have tried to write even one. I owe my creative endeavors to Ginger and shall be forever grateful for her inspiration, support and encouragement. You never know what life will send your way but when it does just grab on with both hands and let life happen.
