Book excerpt: Today is Christmas Eve. Today is my birthday. Today I am fifteen. Today I buried my parents in the backyard. Neither of them were beloved. Marnie and her little sister, Nelly, are on their own now. Only they know what happened to their parents, Izzy and Gene, and they aren't telling. While life in Glasgow's Maryhill housing estate isn't grand, the girls do have each other. Besides, it's only a year until Marnie will be considered an adult and can legally take care of them both. As the New Year comes and goes, Lennie, the old man next door, realizes that his young neighbors are alone and need his help. Or does he need theirs? Lennie takes them in—feeds them, clothes them, protects them—and something like a family forms. But soon enough, the sisters' friends, their teachers, and the authorities start asking tougher questions. As one lie leads to another, dark secrets about the girls' family surface, creating complications that threaten to tear them apart. Written with fierce sympathy and beautiful precision, told in alternating voices, The Death of Bees is an enchanting, grimly comic tale of three lost souls who, unable to answer for themselves, can answer only for one another.

Download or read book Song and Significance written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vocal translation is an old art, but the interpretive feeling, skill and craft have expanded into a relatively new area in translation studies. Vocal translation is the translation of the poetic discourse in the hybrid art of the musicopoetic (or poeticomusical) forms, shapes and skills. This symbiotic construct harmonizes together the conflicting roles of music and language in face-to-face singing performances. The artist sings in an accurate but free flow, but sung in a language different from the original lyrics. Vocal translation is a living-together community of composer and poet and translator; they work together though separately in time and place, through the structure and meaning of the vocalized verbal language. The meaning of the songs is influenced by the elements of musical expression: melody, impulse, pitch, duration, loudness, timbre and dynamics, each of which is governed by its own rules and emotions. The movement of the lyrics is an essential and meaningful attribute of the musical rhythms, pauses, pitches, stresses and articulations of the entire songs. The presence of the original and translated song structures its sounds, senses and gestures to suggest semiotic meaningfulness. In opera, folksong, hymn and art song, as well as in operetta, musical song and popular song, we have musical genres allied to a libretto with lyrical text. A libretto is a linguistic text which is a pre-existing work of art, but is subordinated to the musical text. The essays in Song and Significance: Virtues and Vices of Vocal Translation provide interpretive models for the juxtaposition of different orders of the singing sign-events in different languages, extending the meaning and range of the musical and literary concepts, and putting the mixed signs to a true-and-false test.
Download or read book Church Work written by Betsy P. Skinner and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-04-22 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking for a page turner that captures progressive church values from the perspective of a female rev., among the first females ordained in the mainline church. The novel is ill-fitting for typical Christian markets---no preaching or saccharin moralizing (and yes, the characters kiss and more)--- so the reader can relax and enjoy how a mainline church grapples with glbt concerns, religion vs. spirituality, and the interface of authentic Jesus-morality and life---late' 80s.

Book Synopsis All God's Children by : Betsy P. Skinner
Download or read book All God's Children written by Betsy P. Skinner and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiration for this story is the courage and faith of women who, across the ages, heard Spirit’s call and answered, in spite of convention, resistance, even death. The author crafts a tale about one such woman: The Reverend Calline Simpson, first female minister of High Dunes First United Congregational Church. Spanning a period of six months, late 1980s, the action takes place in the fictional town of High Dunes on the shores of Lake Michigan. Serendipity, and the theology, personality, age, ethnicity and agenda of the characters collide to rock the foundation of the 150-year-old church. While the congregation splits over hiring an out gay man (the A.I.D.S. epidemic is rife), the minister torments herself for violating The Code. Nothing less than a near-death experience can shift the minister’s theology and self- appraisal, and nothing more than divine alchemy can bring all God’s children to sing their Hallelujahs. “Simply stated, I loved this story. The characters were compelling, the story was littered with nice moments and surprises and the writing had a unique, one-of-a-kind feel. Fresh.” Stephen Parolini -“Noveldoctor” “This brings insight to the many demands on ministers. Every parishioner expects you to drop everything and be there for them NOW. The story definitely held my attention. “ -Pat Johnson, educator “I want you to know how much I enjoyed your book. Well written, a good plot and story. It’s a good description of a small church with believable characters. Congratulations.” -Uncle Doc

Book Synopsis Jump into the Story by : Ray R. Friesen
Download or read book Jump into the Story written by Ray R. Friesen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-02-27 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preaching is a challenging, privileged, and awesome responsibility. As important as mining the text for its meaning and message and making connections to our twenty-first-century world is the responsibility to engage the imaginations of the people in the pews (or chairs). In this book, Ray Friesen—life-long preacher and retired pastor—has provided twenty examples of how to be creative and engage those imaginations. Most were written under the pressures of bi-vocational ministry (preaching forty times a year as half-time pastor and operating a mediation practice). They are offered to you, not as sermons for you to preach, but as examples of what is possible, even with all the other responsibilities you may have. Each sermon and type of creativity will create an opportunity to set your imagination and creativity free to engage the imaginations, hearts, and dreams of your parishioners.
