Download or read book О Образѣ Чловѣка written by Gregorius, and published by Böhlau Verlag Köln Weimar. This book was released on 2009 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gregory of Nyssa's De hominis opificio, a treatise on Genesis 1,26, is a key text for the understanding of Eastern Christian anthropology. In the 14th century a Serb translated the 31 chapters of this opus from Greek. The earliest dissemination of the text seems to have been restricted to Athos and the region of Montenegro, Macedonia and Western Bulgaria. The present volume contains a critical edition of the Slavonic text together with the Greek original, an extensive commentary in which text-critical, linguistic and translation-related issues are examined and a glossary with a considerable number of athesaurista.

Book Synopsis The Development of the Bulgarian Literary Language by : Ivan N. Petrov
Download or read book The Development of the Bulgarian Literary Language written by Ivan N. Petrov and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-03-19 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ivan N. Petrov’s The Development of the Bulgarian Literary Language: From Incunabula to First Grammars, Late Fifteenth–Early Seventeenth Century examines the history of the first printed Cyrillic books and their role in the development of the Bulgarian literary language. In the literary culture of the Southern Slavs, especially the Bulgarians, the period that began at the end of the fifteenth century and covered the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries is often seen as a foreshadowing of the pre-national era of modern times. In particular, the centuries-old manuscript tradition was gradually replaced by the Cyrillic printed book, which—after the incunabula of Krakow and Montenegro—was published in such centers as Târgoviște, Prague, Venice, Serbian monasteries, Vilnius, Moscow, Zabłudów, Lviv, Ostroh, and many others. Petrov shows how the study of old Slavic prints is closely linked to the processes that determined the emergence of modern literary languages in the Slavia Orthodoxa area, including the influence of the liturgical Church Slavonic language shared by the Orthodox Slavs, which was increasingly standardized and codified at that time. The perspective of a language historian brings new light to the complex and multidimensional issues of this important transitional period of Slavic history and culture.

Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of Albania by : Robert Elsie
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Albania written by Robert Elsie and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2010-03-19 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Albania is not well known by outsiders; it was deliberately closed to the outside world during the communist era. Now it has thankfully become free again, its borders are open and it can be visited, and it is increasingly integrating with the rest of Europe and beyond. Unfortunately, Albania has had its share of problems in the post-communist era; it's a land of destitution and despair, thanks in part to the Albanian mafia, which has turned the country into one of blood-feuds, kalashnikovs, and eternal crises. Yet, Albania is, in essence, a European nation like any other and will soon, it is to be hoped, advance and take its proper place in Europe and the world. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of Albania relates the history of this little-known country through a detailed chronology, an introduction, a bibliography, appendixes, and over 700 cross-referenced dictionary entries on significant persons, places, and events; institutions and organizations; and political, economic, social, cultural, and religious facets.
Book Synopsis Morphologies in Contact by : Martine Vanhove
Download or read book Morphologies in Contact written by Martine Vanhove and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-12-04 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of articles takes up the issue of Contact Morphology raised by David Wilkins in 1996. In the majority of contact-related studies, morphology is at best a marginal topic. According to the extant borrowing hierarchies, bound morphology is copied only rarely, if at all, because morphological copies presuppose long-term intensive contact with prior massive borrowing of content words and function words. On the other hand, especially in studies of morphological change, contact is often identified as the decisive factor which triggers the disintegration of morphological systems. However, it remains to be seen whether these two standard treatments of morphology in contact situations exhaust the phenomenology of Contact Morphology. The 14 papers of the present volume shed new light on the behavior of morphology under the conditions of language contact. Fresh empirical data from 40 languages world-wide are presented and new theory-based concepts are discussed. Morphologies in Contact is a first in the history of both morphology and language contact studies. It is meant to mark the beginning of an international research program which explores the entire range of aspects connected to morphologies in contact and thus, paves the way for a full-blown Contact Morphology qua linguistic discipline.

Book Synopsis A Reference Grammar of Russian by : Alan Timberlake
Download or read book A Reference Grammar of Russian written by Alan Timberlake and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-22 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes and systematizes all aspects of the grammar of Russian: the patterns of orthography, sounds, inflection, syntax, tense-aspect-mood, word order, and intonation. It is especially concerned with the meaning of combinations of words (constructions). The core concept is that of the predicate history: a record of the states of entities through time and across possibilities. Using predicate histories, the book presents an integrated account of the semantics of verbs, nouns, case, and aspect. More attention is paid to syntax than in any other grammars of Russian written in English or in other languages of Western Europe. Alan Timberlake refers to the literature on variation and trends in development, and makes use of contemporary data from the internet. This book will appeal to students, scholars and language professionals interested in Russian.
