Book excerpt: Excerpt from Slavery, Its Origin, Nature and History: Its Relations to Society, to Government, and to True Religion, to Human Happiness and Divine Glory; Considered in the Light of Bible Teachings, Moral Justice, and Political Wisdom Question. Is the citizen who owes allegiance to the state for life, as properly a slave to the state for life, as the African, who owes service, or labor to his master for life Answer. Certainly, he is as much a slave to the state, though he be called a free man. The state subjects men while within her jurisdiction to her control, and claims a right to-their service in wha'ts rer form she may in her sovereignty, be pleased to call for it; so the master subjects his slave to his control, and claims a right to his service in whatever form he may call for it. But is not this service or labor to the state, and this subjection to her authority, all voluntary on the part of the white race? An swer. It is not more voluntary with the white minor, and the female half of the white race, than with the black slave. Both 'may quietly submit to it, while neither may like it. The white minor and the black slave are both born equally subject to absolute control without their consent. Both are born in a state of domestic bondage, one for life, to his master, the other for twenty-one years, to his father. When this age is reached he who has been in domestic bondage up to this time, silently acquiesces in subjection to 'the 'state, which now binds him for the balance of his life, to service and subjection; as the African is bound to his master for the balance of his life. The state, who is the master of the citizen. And the man, who is the master of the slave; is right fully clothed with authority the world 'over to. Maintain dominion over both. This authority, or power to govern them, is from God. It was given to Adam before the first child was born. God said to Eve that Adam should rule over her. This included the family and the state. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Testimony of God Against Slavery: A Collection of Passages From the Bible, Which Show the Sin of Holding and Treating the Human Species as Property; With Notes to Which Is Added the Testimony of the Civilized World Against Slavery If Slavery is ever abolished from the world, it will be done by the influence of the Christian Religion. Men never will abandon slave-holding, till they feel it to be a sin against God: and the reason why all who are now concerned in the support of this system, do not feel and act under this conviction is, because they have not examined it in the light of God's word. It is a solemn fact, that there is scarcely any one sin describe in the inspired writings, in all its parts, features, and consequences, so clearly and explicitly, as is the sin of holding and treating the human species as property; and scarcely any other sin has been so frequently denounced in the Bible, with the fearful maledictions of Heaven. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Domestic Slavery: Considered as a Scriptural Institution IN compliance with the wish of my friend and brother, the Rev. Dr. Fuller, the joint author with me of the following pages, I offer a few words by way of introduction. The origin and progress of this correspondence may be thus briefly stated. In the month of November last, at the request of the editor of the Christian Reflector, Dr. Fuller addressed a letter to that paper, presenting in brief his reasons for believing that Domestic Slavery is sanctioned by the Scriptures, and is therefore not always a sin. In this letter several allusions were made to the publications on this subject both of the late lamented Dr. Charming and myself. Had this eminent man been spared to us, the duty of de fending what we both believed would have fallen into abler hands. It having pleased God to call him to his rest, this duty seemed to devolve upon me. I immediately communicated my intention to Dr. Fuller, and was gratified to learn that it met with his hearty concurrence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Scriptural Examination of the Institution of Slavery in the United States: With Its Objects and Purposes We have not undertaken to write the general history of slavery, nor the history of slavery in the United States; the extent of our undertaking is, to show the purposes for which African slavery was instituted, in so far as the United States stand connected with it. There are two propositions of essential importance, and which never must be lost sight of, in the investigation of this subject, to wit: 1. African slavery is a punishment, inflicted upon the enslaved, for their wickedness. - The proper understanding of this proposition requires that we should keep steadily before the mind the fact, that nations, communities, peoples, may and do sin against God, as well as individuals; and nations, communities, peoples, are punishable and punished, as well as individuals. The only difference is this: individuals may escape punishment; they often do, in this world: their punishment may be postponed to the day of judgment; but nations, communities, peoples, must be punished in this world, for they cannot, as such, be brought into the judgment of the great day. 2. Slavery, as it exists in the United States, is the Providentially-arranged means whereby Africa is to be lifted from her deep degradation, to a state of civil and religious liberty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible View of Slavery I proceed, accordingly, to the evi dence of the sacred Scriptures, which, long ago, produced complete conviction in my own mind, and must, as I regard it, be equally conclusive to every can did and sincere inquirer. When the array Of positive proof is exhibited, I shall consider the objections, and ex amine their validity with all the fair ness in my power. The first appearance of slavery in the Bible is the wonderful prediction of the patriarch Noah: Cursed be Canaan, a servant of servants shall he be to his brethren. Blessed be the Lord God of Shem, and Canaan shall be his servant. God shall enlarge J a phet, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem, and Canaan shall be his ser vant. (gen. 9.
