Thus reality loses more and more of its spatial qualities, even as theoretical physicists develop increasingly sophisticated models to better understand the structures of time and space. As they employ an ever-growing number of dimensions in this endeavor, the mode of our sensual reception continues to become as flat and one-dimensional as the monitors of the computers at which we work. Throughout the history of art, sculpture has been prized as one of the foremost artistic expressions in western culture, one that employs far less illusionism than, for instance, painting. The works included in "Sculptural Sphere" are analyzed based on their spatial parameters. Their dimensions prove useful in defining the sculptural sphere that surrounds our bodies, as well as our reception of our multi-dimensional spatial environment.

Book excerpt: The First Book With All of George Baselitz's Sculptures Georg Baselitz, born Hans-Georg Kern in Deutschbaselitz, Saxony, in 1939, continuously contravenes set categories and regularities in his work. The manifold meanings of his works, the allusions and pictorial references to art history, contemporary history and biography, the ironic distance and the eagerness to experiment emphasize how he ceaselessly rethinks and reinvents his painting. In sculpture, in which Baselitz first began to work in 1979, he fights against harmony and symmetry just as he does in his paintings. Much like the painter Baselitz accords the greatest possible freedom to the individual brushstrokes in his paintings, the sculptor Baselitz works the wood with a chain saw, hatchet and chisel. The raw feats of strength create abrupt lines, notches and incisions in the sculpture. Sculpture, the artist has said, is a shorter path than painting to express the same problem, since sculpture is more primitive, more brutal and more unconditional. The lively evocative power of the creative means is much more directly legible and much less encoded in the medium of sculpture. The Twelve Year Truce (1609-1621) brought the necessary peace for a political, economic and in particular cultural revival. Deutungen und Formen des Gedenkens, die heute praktiziert werden, haben selber inzwischen eine Geschichte. Mehrfach glaubte man bereits in beiden Teilen Deutschlands, daß die Schuldfrage gelöst sei und die Kriegserfahrung bewältigt. Jedesmal stellte sich heraus, daß die Deutschen noch immer in der Schuld sind, nicht nur aus der Perspektive ihrer europäischen Nachbarn. Die Beiträge in diesem Band gehen auf den Anfang eines unabgeschlossenen Prozesses zurück. Die Befragung gilt nicht den Menschen, sondern den Medien. Gefragt wird, wie in der Literatur, in der Presse, im Fernsehen und Film in den 40er und 50er Jahren mit dem Krieg umgegangen worden ist, welche Bilder davon die Literatur, die Presse, Fernsehen, Film und Hörspiel anzubieten hatten und welche Tendenzen sich dabei in den beiden deutschen Staaten, in Österreich, Polen und Frankreich nachweisen lassen. Eine Reflexion auf die neunziger Jahre macht das Thema spannend, denn dadurch wird den Bildern vom Krieg, die im wiedervereinigten Deutschland im Umlauf sind, ihr Ort im Zyklus zugewiesen: Ein Beitrag zur wieder nötig gewordenen Orientierung.
