Book excerpt: When a valuable Nazi SS Skull Head ring - one of the most sought-after World War II collectables - is mistakenly left behind at his new Savannah business, Freemason military historian Jake Tununda sets out to Sapelo Island, Georgia to find its owner. He meets Doctor Blackbeard - the Hoodoo root doctor, Buffalo Soldier, Prince Hall Mason, and legendary Saltwater Geechee moonshine king. Jake's good intentions soon backfire as he's thrust into a deadly domestic situation involving an abusive guardian and the pilfering of sacred land belonging to slave descendants. His moral compass is sent spinning after he finds out the skull ring is evidence of a dark military program kept secret since the final days of the war: Operation Overcast and the human smuggling of Nazis back to America. From author Michael Karpovage comes another brilliantly-plotted and meticulously-researched novel meshing historical fact with an adventurous treasure hunt. Skull of Disguises is centered around a mysterious 1945 German U-boat buried deep in the maritime forest of a remote Georgia barrier island. Coupled with a manhunt for the ruthless master thief Phoenix and a showdown with brutal Sinaloa cartel drug smugglers, Jake must overcome several deadly confrontations before he and his team can make the perilous trek to find the German U-boat. And what lurks inside.
Book Synopsis Disguise on the Early Modern English Stage by : Professor Peter Hyland
Download or read book Disguise on the Early Modern English Stage written by Professor Peter Hyland and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disguise devices figure in many early modern English plays, and an examination of them clearly affords an important reflection on the growth of early theatre as well as on important aspects of the developing nation. In this study Peter Hyland considers a range of practical issues related to the performance of disguise. He goes on to examine various conceptual issues that provide a background to theatrical disguise (the relation of self and "other", the meaning of mask and performance). He looks at many disguise plays under three broad headings. He considers moral issues (the almost universal association of disguise with "evil"); social issues (sumptuary legislation, clothing, and the theatre, and constructions of class, gender and national or racial identity); and aesthetic issues (disguise as an emblem of theatre, and the significance of disguise for the dramatic artist). The study serves to examine the significant ways in which disguise devices have been used in early modern drama in England.

Book Synopsis Andy Warhol's Blow Job by : Roy Grundmann
Download or read book Andy Warhol's Blow Job written by Roy Grundmann and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ground-breaking and provocative book, Roy Grundmann contends that Andy Warhol's notorious 1964 underground film, Blow Job, serves as rich allegory as well as suggestive metaphor for post-war American society's relation to homosexuality. Arguing that Blow Job epitomizes the highly complex position of gay invisibility and visibility, Grundmann uses the film to explore the mechanisms that constructed pre-Stonewall white gay male identity in popular culture, high art, science, and ethnography. Grundmann draws on discourses of art history, film theory, queer studies, and cultural studies to situate Warhol's work at the nexus of Pop art, portrait painting, avant-garde film, and mainstream cinema. His close textual analysis of the film probes into its ambiguities and the ways in which viewers respond to what is and what is not on screen. Presenting rarely reproduced Warhol art and previously unpublished Ed Wallowitch photographs along with now iconic publicity shots of James Dean, Grundmann establishes Blow Job as a consummate example of Warhol's highly insightful engagement with a broad range of representational codes of gender and sexuality. Roy Grundmann is Assistant Professor of Film Studies at Boston University and a contributing editor of Cineaste.

Download or read book Bond Girls written by Monica Germanà and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-03 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Ursula Andress's white-bikini debut in Dr No, 'Bond Girls' have been simultaneously celebrated as fashion icons and dismissed as 'eye-candy'. But the visual glamour of the women of James Bond reveals more than the sexual objectification of female beauty. Through the original joint perspectives of body and fashion, this exciting study throws a new, subversive light on Bond Girls. Like Coco Chanel, fashion's 'eternal' mademoiselle, these 'Girls' are synonymous with an unconventional and dynamic femininity that does not play by the rules and refuses to sit still; far from being the passive objects of the male gaze, Bond Girls' active bodies instead disrupt the stable frame of Bond's voyeurism. Starting off with an original re-assessment of the cultural roots of Bond's postwar masculinity, the book argues that Bond Girls emerge from masculine anxieties about the rise of female emancipation after the Second World War and persistent in the present day. Displaying parallels with the politics of race and colonialism, such tensions appear through sartorial practices as diverse as exoticism, power dressing and fetish wear, which reveal complex and often contradictory ideas about the patriarchal and imperial ideologies associated with Bond. Attention to costume, film and gender theory makes Bond Girls: Body, Gender and Fashion essential reading for students and scholars of fashion, media and cultural studies, and for anyone with an interest in Bond.

Book Synopsis Discoveries on the Early Modern Stage by : Leslie Thomson
Download or read book Discoveries on the Early Modern Stage written by Leslie Thomson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-19 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a study of the dramatic use, treatment, and staging of performed 'discoveries' - actions which the theatre is uniquely able to exploit visually and explore verbally. The motif of discovery - in the now almost obsolete sense of uncovering or disclosing - is prominent in the language and action of Elizabethan, Jacobean, and Caroline plays. Visual discoveries are used repeatedly through the period by virtually every playwright, regardless of company or venue. These discoveries are of two different but related kinds: the disguise discovery - the removal of a disguise to uncover identity; and the discovery scene - the opening of curtains or doors to reveal a place or the removal of a lid or cover to effect a disclosure. This is the first analysis of staged discoveries as such; in it I show how and why these actions are essential to the way a play dramatizes and explores such interrelated matters as deception, privacy, secrecy, and truth; knowledge, justice, and renewal"--
