Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book really began in 1980 with our first microcomputer, an Apple II +. The great value of the Apple II + was that we could take the computer programs we had been building on mainframe and mini-computers, and make them available to the many fisheries biologists who also had Apple II + 's. About 6 months after we got our first Apple, John Glaister came through Vancouver and saw what we were doing and realized that his agency (New South Wales State Fisheries) had the same equipment and could run the same programs. John organized a training course in Australia where we showed about 25 Australian fisheries biologists how to use microcomputers to do many standard fisheries analyses. In the process of organizing this and sub sequent courses we developed a series of lecture notes. Over the last 10 years these notes have evolved into the chapters of this book.

Download or read book Swimming Physiology of Fish written by Arjan P. Palstra and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-30 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In light of mounting fishing pressures, increased aquaculture production and a growing concern for fish well-being, improved knowledge on the swimming physiology of fish and its application to fisheries science and aquaculture is needed. This book presents recent investigations into some of the most extreme examples of swimming migrations in salmons, eels and tunas, integrating knowledge on their performance in the laboratory with that in their natural environment. For the first time, the application of swimming in aquaculture is explored by assessing the potential impacts and beneficial effects. The modified nutritional requirements of “athletic” fish are reviewed as well as the effects of exercise on muscle composition and meat quality using state-of-the-art techniques in genomics and proteomics. The last chapters introduce zebrafish as a novel exercise model and present the latest technologies for studying fish swimming and aquaculture applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decade has brought a great deal of change to serials and to scholarly communication as a whole. Serials have gone online or online only with a rapidness few expected; and many libraries now spend half or more of their materials budgets on electronic journals. Arranged in MARC tag order and by topical subdivision, the latest edition of Notes for Serials Cataloging is designed to help both novice and experienced serials catalogers describe the complex characteristics and relationships of serial publications and construct clear and concise notes. In addition to updated definitions, scope notes, and examples of notes presented in previous editions, it incorporates notes used in electronic serials cataloging as well as covers changing practices in MARC note field usage in keeping with CONSER standards.
