As common property it is, therefore, appropriated for information as to the rise and progress of doctrinal Methodism and its spiritual agencies, called means of grace, touching which perfect unity has been preserved among our coreligionists the wide world over; as well as for contrast of governmental methods, equal prosperity attending diverse polities, and thus demonstrating that it was primarily due, not to any particular system, but to the doctrines and means of grace formulated by the Wesleys out of the Scrip tures and the needs of the period. As collateral to this method and an irrefragable corollary from the facts Of history, one of the fundamentals of this work is submitted as proven; to wit, that the dominant system on either shore of the Atlantic is responsible directly or indirectly for all the divisions of Metho dism, and that in consequence organic unity is an impossibility, even if it could be shown politic, until the divisive elements in the dominating systems are eliminated. These reasons must be the author's plea for occupying the entire first volume in what is really a preparation for the History of the Methodist Protestant Church. No apology is therefore offered for the extended space given to the vindication of the two men who have been most vilified and misrepresented, - Dr. White head of the Wesleyan Methodists and James o'kelly of the Asburyan Methodists. In both cases much new information is furnished; and while no effort is made to condone their errors of temperament and judgment, earnest, and it is believed success ful, effort is made to rescue their memories from unmerited Obloquy. It will also be discovered that nowhere in current Methodist history can such a running biography of Francis Asbury be found, portraying every side of his wonderful character and meting out with an even hand the merits and demerits of an unique system, of which he was the father, in emulation Of the methods of John Wesley, the founder of it. Biographically it is believed that valuable new information is furnished, and fuller extracts made from Asbury's Journal than has been essayed by any other historiographer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on the Eucharist: Addressed to a Member of the Church of Rome, Formerly a Preacher in the Methodist Episcopal Church Circumstances, which it is not needful here to detail, induced the writer Of the several Letters comprised in this volume, to investigate the claims Of the Church Of Rome to the example Of the early church, in proof Of the antiquity Of her peculiar teachings. As it respects her visible worship, no one Of her dogmas is second in pretentious importance, to that which respects the Eucharist. Numerous as are the differences between the Catholic and Protestant religions, says one of her earnest advocates, we may safely assert, that not one is more frequently discussed, or made the touchstone Of the two sys tems' respective claims, than their doctrine respect ing the Sacrament Of the Blessed Eucharist. And this writer expresses the belief, that more persons are brought to the faith Of his church, by satisfying their minds with the Catholic belief respecting the Sacrament, than by being convinced upon many other subjects. Accordingly, we find the believers of a physical change, advocating it as an essentiality, and the sacrifice Of the Mass, as the distinctive mark of the true Church of, God. Should the dis ensaiou Of this subject, and the presentation made, in these communications, contribute somewhat to the exposure Of error, and the vindication Of the truth, the Object of the writer will be realized. Most Of the testimonies produced from the writ ings of the ancient Christian Fathers, have been copied personally, and a faithful representation Of their meaning is believed to be given, as deduced both from the text itself, and the subject of dis course. In discussing collateral topics, it has been necessary, in a few instances, to refer to passages previously quoted, when such repetition was re quired to prove a relative point. And so much' only Of the original languages of our authors is published, as foot notes, and in the form of an Appendix, as seemed desirable to enable the reader to form a satisfactory judgment Of the propriety and correctness of the use made Of their produc tions. If it be true, as an American Statesman of a former generation has said, that Opinion is the queen Of the world, we shall do well to be always ready to give a reason Of our religious belief, and be prepared to defend it, against the sophistical attacks Of misguided Opposers. And as ability and opportunity involve responsibility, so no one is excus able, who, so far intrusts the keeping Of his spiritual interests to the care Of another, as to neglect the legitimate exercise Of his own understanding.
