Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Persia The uniformed natives of these countries, whose condi tion is much to be deplored, are not aware that the great Samuel Johnson has said, that Whatever raises the past, the distant, and the future, above the present, exalts us in the dignity of human beings which is an unanswerably' good reason for the preference given to mummies over every living object, however fascinating. The rage of the present day for mummies and other delectable reliques of antiquity has deluged Egypt with itinerant men of science and research, who have quite ex hansted that land of wonders and those who have lately visited it have been reduced, from actual want of other aliment, to the necessity of preying upon their predecessors, many of whom have been cruelly mangled, and some Wholly devoured. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Art in Persia Geologists tell us that the formation of the Iran plateau is to be explained by an over owing from the north, which filled the spacious basin comprised between the hindu-kush and the chain of Zagros during one or two consecutive upheavals. The alluvium brought by the flood left everything covered except the very top, whose peaks shoot up like rocks out of the sea. Hence it is that throughout this region short plains and mountains succeed each other without transition. The summits of the latter are splintered up, and their sides so precipitous that no vegetable soil can adhere to their surface; there is not a tree to be seen, not even herbaceous plants, lichens, or mosses for the rain-waters are drained as they fall, and percolating the soil, which everywhere is extremely porous, they collect into subterraneous depressions of no great depth, extending beneath the arid surface. Of the tablelands.l Necessity taught man in early days to find out the cool, refreshing liquid in these exhaustless reservoirs, in order to water and fertilize a few patches, at least, of a land that at first sight might seem doomed to everlasting sterility. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Persian Art The History of Art in Persia dates from the remote ages of the Four ancient monarchies, of which Persia is the only one now existing. The long duration of Persia as a separate and generally independent kingdom has been less owing to its power of resisting attacks from without than to the faculty always shown of absorbing its temporary conquerors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of Persia Now it is, I think, always desirable in the first instance to get a clear idea of the ground covered by a subject of which one proposes to treat. Modern, post-muhammadan, Persian literature - a literature covering a period Of about a thousand years - is what I propose to discuss this afternoon but I must Observe in passing that a comprehensive survey of the literature or literatures of Persia would include more than this. There are three older pre-muhammadan literatures well worthy of. Study which belong to Persia; and, though I shall not have time to discuss them to - day, I must at least mention them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Struggle for Persia None of my predecessors (and they may be counted on the fingers) who have taken the almost impassable route between Eastern Russia (via Tabriz) to Teheran having thought fit to record their experiences, it devolves upon my unworthy self to narrate mine in this veritable "terra incognita." The interest lately awakened in England with reference to Persian affairs, together with the lamentable loss of British prestige and British influence, and the overwhelming power of Russia - as they appeared to me - must be my further excuse for bringing them to the notice of all lovers of king and country, in the earnest hope that means may be found to retrieve the paramount supremacy of England in a country where once it was without a rival. Hormoz Mirza for having kindly offered to read that portion of this book which had been written prior to my departure from Persia, and for having placed at my disposal his wide knowledge regarding events and conditions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Persia The Persian Empire occupies the western and larger part of the Iranian plateau, which is situated between the Indus on the east and the Tigris and Euphrates on the west. Its altitude is considerable. Shiraz and Kerman in the south, Isfahan in the centre, and Kermanshah and Hamadan in the west all lie above 5,000 feet. In the north the altitude of Tabriz is over 4,000 feet and that of Teheran (the capital) and Meshed over 3,000 feet. The area of the country is enormous. The traveller who would pass from east to west in the north would traverse some 1,200 miles. From north to south the distance would average 600 to 700 miles. The snow and rainfall are scanty, averaging ten inches in the north and five inches in the south. On the other hand, in the provinces bordering the Caspian Sea, the rainfall is very heavy. On the plateau the climate is intensely dry, with hot days and cold nights. In the Caspian provinces the heavy rainfall creates a moist, malarious, and most unhealthy climate. In the narrow trip of country bordering the Persian Gulf the climate, except close to the sea, is intensely hot and dry. So scanty is the rainfall in view of the power of the sun hat, but for the high ranges, the country would be a desert.
