Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Jewish Social Life in the Days of Christ The object of this volume is kindred to that of my previous book on The Temple, its Ministry and Services as they were at the Time of Jesus Christ. In both I have wished to transport the reader into the land of Palestine at the time of our Lord and of His apostles, and to show him, so far as lay within the scope of each book, as it were, the scene on which, and the persons among whom the events recorded in New Testament history had taken place. For I believe, that in measure as we realise its surroundings - so to speak, see and hear for ourselves what passed at the time, enter into its ideas, become familiar with its habits, modes of thinking, its teaching and worship - shall we not only understand many of the expressions and allusions in the New Testament, but also gain fresh evidence of the truth of its history alike from its faithfulness to the picture of society, such as we know it to have been, and from the contrast of its teaching and aims to those of the contemporaries of our Lord. For, a careful study of the period leaves this conviction on the mind: that - with reverence be it said - Jesus Christ was strictly of His time, and that the New Testament is, in its narratives, language, and allusions, strictly true to the period and circumstances in which its events are laid. Book Synopsis The Whistling Galilean by : Jennifer Bjork
Download or read book The Whistling Galilean written by Jennifer Bjork and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shai, the ten-year-old son of a Galilean fisherman, deeply desires his father’s pride and respect. The frustrated, sometimes angry, boy is challenged by jealousy and competes for attention from a blood relative, his older brother, Ezra. Maturing into adolescence, Shai and his best friend each seek a girlfriend, even doing something ridiculous to gain their attention. Brutality surrounds Shai, ranging from a school bully to Roman torture. The term ‘payment or punishment’ spreads quickly as the unyielding Roman rulers enforce market taxes in Capernaum. Everything is about to change when Shai befriends a stranger from Nazareth one day while bathing in the waters of the Galilee. While his rabbi teaches him to become a man and to abide by Hebrew laws, Yeshua (Jesus) teaches loving care through action. Confused, Shai is faced with conflicting choices, one after another. As Yeshua reveals his power and destiny, people in Shai’s life react differently to his friend’s messages. Shai’s relationships evolve and change as his choices transform not just his life, but also the lives of others.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Jewish Social Life in the Days of Christ Throughout, my constant object has been to illustrate the New Testament history and teaching. Even the Scripture Index at the close will show in how many instances this has been attempted. Most earnestly then do I hope, that these pages may be found to cast some additional light on the New Testament, and that they will convey fresh evidence - to my mind of the strongest kind - and in a new direction, of the truth of those things which are most surely believed among us. And now it only remains at the close of these investigations once more to express my own full and joyous belief in that grand truth to which all leads up - that christ IS the end OF the law for righteousness TO every one that believeth. He was given a New Testament while studying medicine at the University of Pest (Budapest) and soon afterwards came to believe in Jesus as his Messiah. He held several teaching positions in the United Kingdom before settling at the University of Oxford. From 1882 until his death, he was Grinfeld Lecturer on the Septuagint. He is still considered a leading authority on Jewish life and customs in the time of Jesus. He wrote many books on a variety of topics, most famously The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah. Book Synopsis God, Marriage, and Family (Second Edition) by : Andreas J. Köstenberger
Download or read book God, Marriage, and Family (Second Edition) written by Andreas J. Köstenberger and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2010-05-05 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The release of the landmark first edition of God, Marriage, and Family provided an integrated, biblical treatment of God's purposes for the home. Since then, explain authors Andreas Köstenberger and David Jones, the crisis confronting modern households has only intensified, and yet the solution remains the same: obedience to and application of God's Word. In the second edition of God, Marriage, and Family, Köstenberger and Jones explore the latest controversies, cultural shifts, and teachings within both the church and society and further apply Scripture's timeless principles to contemporary issues. This new edition includes an assessment of the family-integrated church movement; discussion of recent debates on corporal punishment, singleness, homosexuality, and divorce and remarriage; new sections on the theology of sex and the parenting of teens; and updated bibliographies. This book will prove to be a valuable resource for personal and group study, Christian counseling, and marriage and family courses.
