Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Jewish Social Life in the Days of Christ Throughout, my constant object has been to illustrate the New Testament history and teaching. Even the Scripture Index at the close will show in how many instances this has been attempted. Most earnestly then do I hope, that these pages may be found to cast some additional light on the New Testament, and that they will convey fresh evidence - to my mind of the strongest kind - and in a new direction, of the truth of those things which are most surely believed among us. And now it only remains at the close of these investigations once more to express my own full and joyous belief in that grand truth to which all leads up - that christ IS the end OF the law for righteousness TO every one that believeth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five hundred years ago, the church of Jesus Christ underwent a Reformation. A lot happened after Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the castle church door in Wittenberg. But the fallout was not simply the start of Protestantism. The Roman Catholic Church also recast itself in response to Luther's call for reforms. And contrary to common belief, Martin Luther did not set out to start a new church. Rather, he was trying to reform the church that already existed by reemphasizing its essence-namely, the "good news" (the gospel) that Jesus forgives and saves sinners. The unity of the church was broken when the pope rejected this call for reform and excommunicated Luther, starting a chain of events that did lead to the institutional fracturing of Christendom and to a plethora of alternative Christian theologies. But, as many - including conservative Catholics - now admit, the church did in fact need reforming. Today, the church - including its Protestant branches - also needs reforming. Some of the issues in contemporary Christianity are very similar to those in the late Middle Ages, though others are new. But if Luther's theology can be blamed - however unfairly - for fragmenting Christianity, perhaps today it can help us recover the wholeness of Christianity. The religious climate in the early 21st-century is simultaneously highly religious and highly secularized. It is a time of extraordinary spiritual and theological diversity. In the spirit of the anniversary we are observing, this book will propose the kind of Christianity that is best suited for our day. The remedies offered here are available by way of the same theology that was the catalyst for reforming the church five hundred years ago.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Jewish Social Life in the Days of Christ The object of this volume is kindred to that of my previous book on The Temple, its Ministry and Services as they were at the Time of Jesus Christ. In both I have wished to transport the reader into the land of Palestine at the time of our Lord and of His apostles, and to show him, so far as lay within the scope of each book, as it were, the scene on which, and the persons among whom the events recorded in New Testament history had taken place. For I believe, that in measure as we realise its surroundings - so to speak, see and hear for ourselves what passed at the time, enter into its ideas, become familiar with its habits, modes of thinking, its teaching and worship - shall we not only understand many of the expressions and allusions in the New Testament, but also gain fresh evidence of the truth of its history alike from its faithfulness to the picture of society, such as we know it to have been, and from the contrast of its teaching and aims to those of the contemporaries of our Lord. For, a careful study of the period leaves this conviction on the mind: that - with reverence be it said - Jesus Christ was strictly of His time, and that the New Testament is, in its narratives, language, and allusions, strictly true to the period and circumstances in which its events are laid. Book excerpt: In a closely reasoned, logical presentation, Dr. Montgomery examines such issues as: Where is History Going? / What Does a Historian Know About Jesus Christ? / The Divinity of Jesus Christ / Karl Barth and Contemporary Theology of History / Tillich's Philosophy of History / Gordon Clark's Historical Philosophy / Toward a Christian Philosophy of History. Dr. Montgomery thoroughly documents his conclusions on the basis of a wide range of authorities, and concludes that the only valid approach to history is from the Christian perspective - the authority of God, His Son, and His Word.

How should the church reach out into the world with the message of salvation? This revised BST volume from John Stott opens to us the early days of the church as recorded by Luke in the book of Acts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the Bible provide a construct for marriage that is relevant for a confused world? This book reflects a pastor's conviction that biblical revelation culminating in Christ does speak to the issues and potentials for marriage in such a world. By focusing on what the biblical vocabulary of marriage, from Genesis to Revelation, may reveal of the Creator-Redeemer's intent for marriage, Ernest D. Martin develops a Christological paradigm for marriage that is consistent and applicable. Pastors, teachers, and counselors will find biblical faith perspectives useful in responding to the challenges and opportunities they face in the several phases of marital relationships. This short book will greatly benefit anyone seriously concerned with what the Bible says about marriage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stirring defense of the faith by one of Christianity's ablest defenders, this is a re-issue of the classic "History and Christianity" expanded to include Dr. Montgomery's essay "Christianity Juridically Defended." Dr. John Montgomery, scholar, theologian and apologist for the faith, developed this book from a seminar he presented at the University of British Columbia. Readable and convincing, the book is divided into four sections: Section One deals with four basic errors usually committed by those who attack the historicity of the New Testament.Section Two defends the accuracy of the New Testament documents, using tests which are commonly applied to any ancient document.Section Three, entitled "God Closes In," is a powerful defense of the truly divine and truly human nature of Christ.Section Four clearly shows that if Jesus were not the Son of God, the only other alternatives are either liar or lunatic. The last section contains Dr. Montgomery's essay "Christianity Juridically Defended." The book includes the transcript of a panel discussion in which Dr. Montgomery convincingly argues from the above four points to demonstrate their application for the reader. Here is excellent material for class discussion or individual study, particularly suited to helping young people combat humanistic concepts of the Bible and Christianity.

Book excerpt: As members of the LDS Church, we owe our understanding of the scriptures to many scholars, both inside and out of the LDS community. Perhaps the most influential non-LDS scholar was a man named Alfred Edersheim. Born in 1825 to Jewish parents, he became an Anglican minister, a prolific writer, and a gifted linguist. His works have been studied and quoted by Church authorities and scholars for more than a hundred years. Edersheim used his knowledge of Jewish customs, language, and beliefs to increase Christianity's understanding of the events and teachings of both the Old and New Testaments. His scholarship, coupled with a fervent testimony of Jesus Christ, has made him one of the most influential scripture scholars of our time. Alfred Edersheim: Jewish Scholar for the Mormon Prophets explores his life, his writings, and his influence on LDS writers, scholars, and authorities. Whether or not you are already familiar with Edersheim's work, you will enjoy reading the words of this inspiring disciple of Christ. His powerful testimony of the Savior will strengthen your own faith in the mission of Jesus Christ.
