Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ultimate introduction to this supernatural hero features 16 standalone stories with Mignola's greatest collaborators--stories that can be read in any order. This 368-page volume covers Hellboy's adventures from 1947 to 1961, reprinting stories from The Chained Coffin, The Right Hand of Doom, The Bride of Hell, The Crooked Man, The Troll Witch, and Hellboy's childhood adventure, The Midnight Circus, drawn by Duncan Fegredo, artist of The Wild Hunt, the basis for Neil Marshall's 2019 film Hellboy. In 1994 Mike Mignola released the first Hellboy series, Seed of Destruction, as Hellboy faced his supposed destiny as Beast of the Apocalypse. Before that, he'd spent fifty years fighting monsters as a somewhat carefree member of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. The Complete Short Stories Volumes 1 & 2 present those early adventures. "The Crooked Man" and "Double Feature of Evil," both of which earned Mignola and his legendary collaborator Richard Corben Eisner Awards, are collected with the complete "Hellboy in Mexico" saga, featuring collaborations with Corben, Mick McMahon, Gabriel Ba, and Fabio Moon, as well as one of Mignola's early masterpiece, "The Corpse." The two volumes of The Complete Short Stories together with the four volume Hellboy Omnibus series collect all of Mignola's award-winning Hellboy stories in chronological order for a definitive reading experience.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches Incidents, Vol. 1: Or a Budget From the Saddle-Bags of a Superannuated Itinerant In order to give the following sketches a slight aspect of unity, the author has adopted an arrangement which he hopes will not detract in the most scrupulous estimation from the general veracity of the work. Though adapted to the Sunday-School Library, it is chiefly designed for the advanced youth of the church; and the author would not dissemble that, in his matter and in his style, he has studied to meet the wants of this interesting class. Book excerpt: Sir Charles Eliot's "Hinduism and Buddhism, An Historical Sketch, Vol. 1" is a gigantic work that provides a comprehensive analysis of the origins, development, and historical circumstances of Hinduism and Buddhism. This scholarly masterwork demonstrates Eliot's remarkable comprehension of both of the main Asian religions and their effect on Indian and global cultures and society. Volume 1 dives into Hinduism's ancient roots, chronicling its development from the earliest Vedic traditions to the diverse and multifaceted belief systems which developed over time. He explores Hinduism's philosophical, mythical, and ritual parts, providing readers an in-depth knowledge of its many customs and beliefs. Furthermore, the book exhaustively traces Buddhism's rise, its founder, Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha), and the spread of this transforming spiritual movement throughout Asia. Eliot investigates not only the tenets and customs of Buddhism, but also its historical relationships with Hinduism and the larger social milieu. Some stories are brutal and weird, while others creep up on you and draw you in slowly. This version of "Hinduism and Buddhism, An Historical Sketch, Vol. 1" is both modern and legible, with an eye-catching new cover and professionally typeset manuscript.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Civil War Sketches and Incidents, Vol. 1 Remembering the apparent unanimity with which the people of the south sustained the secession movement after hostilities had actually begun, we are apt to forget how devout was the love for the Union in some sections of the Confederacy. Nowhere, not even in Eastern Tennessee, was this sentiment stronger than in portions of the state of North Carolina. On the 17th of January, 1861, I was passing through the last named state on my way to Mi Hedgeville, Georgia. The southern heart was fast catching fire, and there were plenty of hot-heads to apply the kindling torch in North Carolina. Georgia had just passed her secession ordinance, and the half-grown, tar-heel boys were shouting for the side which promised relief from the dreary monotony of their lives. At every cross roads, and at every railway station, you were pretty sure to see two or three young men with the blue and white cockade (at that early day the emblem of treason) in their hats. Most of the old men on the train looked grave and troubled, but kept quiet. Ex-Governor Moorhead, however, a frank, plain-spoken old patriot, who had not long before quitted the gubernatorial chair of North Carolina, left no one in doubt as to what his sentiments were. He denounced secession as a crime and secessionists as fools, in language which was not to be mistaken. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: "Lee and Young have admirably elucidated this foundational volume in the history of American photography by developing references that emerge from prior readings of these images, as well as thoughtfully producing new ways of seeing the landscapes Gardner presents. The book makes available to a wide audience one of the most important photographic records of any war and certainly the most interesting visual record of the American Civil War. This is superior scholarship."—Shirley Samuels, author of Facing America: Iconography and the Civil War "Anthony Lee and Elizabeth Young's deceptively slim volume is a complex, enlightening, and elegant study of a significant Civil War-era document that also greatly enhances our understanding of nineteenth-century visual culture. The analysis and format of this collaborative effort will serve as a model for cultural scholarship for years to come."—Joshua Brown, author of Beyond the Lines: Pictorial Reporting, Everyday Life, and the Crisis of Gilded Age America "In this beautifully written analysis of one of the most important works of nineteenth-century American photography, Lee and Young restore Gardner's Sketch Book to its rightful place as a key document of American history. At once a report of a newsworthy event and a meditation on its historical meaning, Gardner's album is less unmediated reportage than a carefully constructed argument. In clear, lucid prose, Lee and Young help us understand just how Gardner made this work that helped fix the Civil War in American memory."—Martha A. Sandweiss, author of Print the Legend: Photography and the American West

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Promising spine-tingling delights and sleepless nights, this annotated edition of Tales and Sketches is a treasure trove for scholars and general readers alike, confirming Edgar Allan Poe's status as one of literary art's "most brilliant but erratic stars". This volume is the first of two, edited by the consummate Poe scholar Thomas Ollive Mabbott, collecting all the tales of a master of the uncanny, the unnerving, and the terrifying. Each volume is enriched with Mabbott's detailed and authoritative notes on sources, the history and collation of all known texts authorized by Poe, and variants of Poe's "final" version. Marrying grotesque inventiveness with superb plot construction, Poe's strikingly original tales often use only one main character and one main incident. In many of them, horror and suspense, revenge and torture, are laced with hilarious satire. Volume I includes "Ms. Found in a Bottle", the horrific "Berenice", "Ligeia" (which Poe considered his finest tale), "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", and one of his most famous stories, "The Fall of the House of Usher".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This military history examines the complex factors surrounding the execution of an American militia colonel in British-occupied Charleston, SC. South Carolina patriot militiamen played an integral role in helping the Continental army reclaim their state from its British conquerors. In Martyr of the American Revolution, Cordell L. Bragg, III, examines the events that set Col. Isaac Hayne into a disastrous conflict with two British officers, his execution in Charleston, and the repercussions that extended from South Carolina to the Continental Congress and the halls of British Parliament. Hayne was the most prominent American executed by the British for treason. He and his two principal antagonists, Lt. Col. Nisbet Balfour and Lt. Col. Francis Lord Rawdon, were unwittingly set on a collision course that climaxed in an act that sparked one of the war’s most notable controversies. Martyr of the American Revolution sheds light on why two professional soldiers were driven to commit a seemingly arbitrary deed that halted prisoner exchange and nearly brought disastrous consequences to captive British officers. The death of a patriot in the cause of liberty was not a unique occurrence, but the unusually well-documented events surrounding the execution of Hayne and the involvement of his friends and family makes his story compelling and poignant. Unlike young Capt. Nathan Hale, who suffered a similar fate in 1776, Hayne did not become a folk hero. Yet his execution became an international affair debated in both Parliament and the Continental Congress.
