Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flowers Culled From the Gulistan, or Rose Garden, and From the Bostan, or Pleasure Garden of Sadi: A Persian Poet, Who Flourished in the 13th Century Of the distinguished authors of Persia, none perhaps have enjoyed in the Eastern world a more decided and wider popularity than Sadi, and few, if indeed any, have so nearly attained that rank even in our Western world. He early won the attention of European scholars through a Latin translation of his best known work, the Gulistan, or Rose Garden, made by George Gentius, and published by him at Amsterdam, A.D. 1651, under the title of Rosarium Politicum. The fame of this celebrated production has since, but with a considerable interval of time, been extensively diffused by other translations into the principal languages of Europe: in our own by those of Gladwin, Dumoulin, Lee, Ross, and more recently an excellent one by Professor Eastwick; in German, by Nesselmann and Graf; in France, by Semelet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Persian Poetry for English Readers: Being Specimens of Six of the Greatest Classical Poets of Persia, Ferdusī, Nizāmī, Sādi, Jelāl-Ad-Dīn Rūmī, Hāfiz, and Jāmī; With Biographical Notices and Notes There is one point upon which I am particularly anxious to be very frank, and to be perfectly under stood by any who may be my readers. I make no claim to be regarded as a Persian scholar, nor do I wish to be so regarded. My knowledge of the language is very imperfect. The only claim I make is this: that I have done my work - such as it is laboriously and conscientiously. To repair my own defects I have sought assistance wherever I could find it. I could have done nothing satisfactory to myself without such aid. I have diligently compared my own translations, line by line and word by word, with the best texts which I could obtain, and with such translations as existed in English, French, and German. I trust, therefore, that, as regards the sense of the Persian originals, I am not greatly in error. As to the English garb in which I have clothed them, my readers must judge of that. It is very much on the score of my want of a scholarly mastery of the language (though combined with other causes) that, as stated above, I have had so much doubt and hesitation about reprinting my work, and I should not improbably have continued to doubt and hesitate, and finally abandon the idea altogether. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Persian Portraits: A Sketch of Persian History, Literature, and Politics For the Oriental scholar, or for persons well versed in Oriental literature, this book has not been written. A very hasty perusal of it will Show them that it contains nothing new, and may be 'taken as read, ' a form frequently adopted in the case of reports at public meetings. But there are many people in this country who know little, and care less, about Oriental literature generally, and Persian literature particularly. They have not the time or the inclination to turn their attention to literature of the sort, and so remain in complete ignorance of what is really both useful and interesting. Excerpt: ...no voice from the old man reached the ear. Then he said: "O thou that hast seen many days, I perceive that thou art not pious and earnest as an old man should be. "Is it not proper, when thou eatest thy daily bread, to name the name of the Lord who gave it?" He replied: "I have not followed thy way, for I was never taught it by the Priest of the Fire-Worshippers." Then the Prophet of good omen knew that the old man was an Infidel, doomed to perdition; And when he found him to be an alien, he assailed him with contumelies as a wicked wretch too unholy to consort with the holy. Then came an Angel from the Creator who reproved him sternly, saying: "I have bestowed upon him life and daily food for a hundred years, and is he become to thee an abomination in a single day? "If he hath offered up his adoration before Fire, art thou therefore to withdraw from him the hand of benevolence?"--Grafs Text, p. 142. Trans/. i. 99. The Wise Man And The Cheat. An eloquent fellow came to a Wise-man, saying: "I am broken-down and stuck fast, entangled in the clay. "I am indebted to one of the base-bom rabble ten direms, the weight of which lieth on my breast like ten hundred-weights. "All night he maketh my condition miserable; all day he followeth my tail like my shadow. "He hath sorely broken my heart with his words; my inmost soul as the door of my house. "He talketh as though God, since his mother bore him, had never given him aught save those ten direms. "Of the books of his religion he knoweth not the first letter, and can recite only the chapter of denial. "Not a day doth the sun rise above the mountain that this wretched man is not battering my door with the knocker. "I am...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the middle ages, Persia has produced more great poets than any other country in the world. Sir William Jones about two hundred fifty years ago, in his introduction on Hafez, wrote, "...At Oxford there is a manuscript containing the lives of a hundred and twenty-eight of the finest Persian poets," of these, according to Iranians, the fourteenth century poet, Hafez, is their last, greatest, and the most beloved of all; even though, Persia has had poets like Sa'di, Khayyam, Ferdosi, Nezami, and Rumi to boast about! (Iranians take Rumi as a Persian.) They also consider Hafez as their most difficult poet to understand. One may ask, how could such a difficult poet be so popular among people of all walks of life? No Hafez scholar, heretofore, has directly addressed, or adequately answered this question! In this book, the author, for the first time, raises and answers this question by bringing convincing examples from different parts of the divan. Another unique aspect of this book is in the fact that the author has interpreted some couplets entirely different than what other commentators have done, and sometimes, the opposite of theirs! Still another difference that we find in this book is the sequence of the couplets in some ghazals. The author, in order to find the natural unity of the poems, he has arranged a new sequence for the couplets. Something that is lacking in all available divans. The translations are accurately and charmingly done in the form of uni-rhymed ghazal, and each one is preceded by the original, and followed by a commentary, something that has never been done before. This book is written for English-speaking people who wish to know Hafez, especially, the siblings of the Iranians in diaspora, whose children have heard the praise of Hafez from their parents, but are unable to read him in Farsi. It is for them to read him in english and put to test the judgment of their parents.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Persian Poetry: From the Beginnings Down to the Time of Firdausi; With Ten Illustrations This book is a labor of love - the outcome of years of devotion to the study of Persia, its history, languages, and literature, and is in part the result of four journeys through the Land of the Sun, in 1903, 1907, 1910, and 1918. Some of the records of these travels have appeared in print elsewhere. The appreciation with which those studies were received has been an incentive to supplement them by a literary presentation, in brief form, of the earlier poetry of Persia down to about 1000 a.d., so as to include Firdausi's Shah-namah, or 'Book of Kings, ' the great epic poem of Persia. Perhaps the reception of the present work may give encouragement enough to lead to the preparation of a couple of volumes on 'Persian Mystic Poetry' and on 'The Lyric and Romantic Poetry of Iran.' The aim of the chapters included in the present volume - and I hope that they may not be found unduly long - is to give succinctly the main outlines of the several early periods now chosen for presentation, and to illustrate, by translations made from the original Persian, the characteristics of the various authors, regarding whom I have gathered material from all sorts of sources, native and foreign. Many of the citations are only small fragments of verse from Persian poets so long dead that they have been evoked almost as shades from the far-distant past; but there is something very human in their brief messages that makes their story more up-to-date than might be imagined.
