Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketch of and Scenes Along the Line of the Columbus, Buckeye Lake and Newark Traction Railway Since it has been in operation its fame has spread throughout. The country and attracted experts from all sections to inspect it. They all declare it the most up-to-date road in existence. In point of construction they concede it equal to the best steam road standards, and its cars or trains the finest in the country. The daily increasing travel over the line attests the truth of the above statements. This road is now known as the Pleasure Line. Every person who makes a trip over it is so pleased with the ease of the ride and the beautiful scenery along the line, and the rapid time made, that he or she becomes an enthusiast and induces all friends and acquaintances to Take a trip. Thus the endless chain and the traction habit. A trip over the road is a revelation to those even who have traveled on traction lines all over the country. They declare the Columbus, Buckeye Lake and Newark road the Abou Ben dhcm of them all. There is no extravagance in this claim, as every traveler will admit. To those who have not made a trip, all we ask is a stay of judgment until they have made a trial trip. This is the day of the trolley; the steam roads have had their day. The chestnut about traction roads not making fast time is exploded. Running side by side, the latest traction car can run away from the steam cars as there is no limit to the speed of the former. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the history of electronic communication, the last quarter of the nineteenth century holds a special place, for it was during this period that the telephone, phonograph, electric light, wireless, and cinema were all invented. In When old Technologies Were New, Carolyn Marvin explores how two of these new inventions--the telephone and the electric light--were publicly envisioned at the end of the nineteenth century, as seen in specialized engineering journals and popular media. Marvin pays particular attention to the telephone, describing how it disrupted established social relations, unsettling customary ways of dividing the private person and family from the more public setting of the community. On the lighter side, she describes how people spoke louder when calling long distance, and how they worried about catching contagious diseases over the phone. A particularly powerful chapter deals with telephonic precursors of radio broadcasting--the "Telephone Herald" in New York and the "Telefon Hirmondo" of Hungary--and the conflict between the technological development of broadcasting and the attempt to impose a homogenous, ethnocentric variant of Anglo-Saxon culture on the public. While focusing on the way professionals in the electronics field tried to control the new media, Marvin also illuminates the broader social impact, presenting a wide-ranging, informative, and entertaining account of the early years of electronic media.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of Chautauqua, written by Jesse Lyman Hurlbut and originally published in 1921, is a comprehensive account of the history and development of the Chautauqua Institution, a cultural and educational center located in Chautauqua, New York. The book traces the origins of the Chautauqua movement, which began as a series of summer lectures and religious retreats in the late 19th century, and follows its growth into a national phenomenon that attracted millions of visitors each year. Hurlbut's book delves into the various aspects of the Chautauqua experience, including its religious and educational programs, its recreational activities, and its impact on American culture and society. He explores the lives and contributions of key figures in the Chautauqua movement, such as John Heyl Vincent and Lewis Miller, and describes the various buildings and landmarks that make up the Chautauqua grounds. Throughout the book, Hurlbut emphasizes the importance of the Chautauqua Institution as a place of intellectual and spiritual growth, and as a symbol of the progressive ideals of the era. He also touches on the challenges and controversies that the institution faced over the years, including financial struggles, changing social attitudes, and the impact of World War I. Overall, The Story of Chautauqua offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of one of America's most beloved cultural institutions, and provides insights into the social and intellectual currents that shaped the nation during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

How did teetotalers, cooperators, railroad moguls, real estate brokers, and radical socialists pool their energies to found a new society and build affordable housing for "men of moderate means"? How did church politics and other critical events shape the social and environmental transformation of a once rural community? This history provides a complete survey of the Bond Hill area, from the post-Colonial period through the Village of Bond Hill's annexation by the City of Cincinnati in 1903, up until the present day.
