Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Method With Geography: Illustrating the Use of the Sketch-Map There has, in recent year, been much discussion on the subject of map-drawing as an aid in the study of Geography; and, while many good teachers strongly advocate it, some equally good teachers as strongly oppose it. The opposition is founded mainly on the fact that it takes up too much valuable time. And, who will say that this objection is not well taken? Pupils have been encouraged to spend weeks in the mechanical construction of maps into whose real meaning and relative proportions they took but little trouble to inquire, but rather spent their time in tracing outlines and coloring surfaces according to some model (usually the map in the book) which lay before them. This mechanical accuracy of copying is, in itself, not a bad thing, but it does not develop the faculty of location nor teach the pupil anything about Geography. To draw maps according to some cartographic diagram, or design, is to defeat the object intended to be gained, and hence, many of our best teachers have warred against map-drawing. The Sketching of maps from memory at once sets aside these objections and retains all that is favorable. This exercise when rightly conducted is a most valuable aid, and the following lessons have been arranged to assist teachers and pupils in its execution. The pupils should take their places at the black-board, and at the direction of the teacher draw the boundary lines, - drawing the same lines at the same time. In this way the outline may be discussed and criticised at different points and its accuracy determined from their memory of positions and relative proportions. Mountains, rivers and lakes should then be sketched, and discussed as to their location, trend, and extent. The capitals and other important cities should then be located. Clemens (before he became Mark Twain), as a teenager, traveled from his hometown of Hannibal, Missouri, to the east (Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and New York City) and south (St, Louis). In the 1860s, he traveled west to Nevada, California, and The Sandwich Islands (Hawai’I). He also traveled east to Europe and the Middle East. In between these early travels and his “around the world” lecture tour in the 1890s, he lived for periods of time in Europe. From these travels and sojourns abroad, Clemens often found that the imagined geography differed significantly from the reality. And, as most people know, he drew on his real and imagined “home” geography of the lower Mississippi River region to produce several works, including his masterpiece, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Although much has been published about his travels, this collection of essays marks a different approach to Twain’s use of geography and geography’s influence on Twain. The eleven essays use Twain’s concepts of space (geography) to help us understand (or to complicate our understanding of) some of Twain’s works, including Life on the Mississippi, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Prince and the Pauper, Roughing It, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, No. 44 The Mysterious Stranger, Tom Sawyer Abroad, and “The Private History of Campaign that Failed.” The contributors include veteran Twain scholars as well as a graduate student and a non-academic humorist. Book excerpt: Writing regions, undertaking a regional study, was once a standard form of geographic communication and critique. This was until the quantitative revolution in the middle of the previous century and more definitively the critical turn in human geography towards the end of the twentieth century. From then on writing regions as they were experienced phenomenologically, or arguing culturally, historically, and politically with regions, was deemed to be old-fashioned. Yet the region is, and always will be, a central geographical concept, and thinking about regions can tell us a lot about the history of the discipline called geography. Despite taking up an identifiable place within the geographical imagination in scholarship and beyond, region remains a relatively forgotten, under-used, and in part under-theorised term. Reanimating Regions marks the continued reinvigoration of a set of disciplinary debates surrounding regions, the regional, and regional geography. Across 18 chapters from international, interdisciplinary scholars, this book writes and performs region as a temporary permanence, something held stable, not fixed and absolute, at different points in time, for different purposes. There is, as this expansive volume outlines, no single reading of a region. Reanimating Regions collectively rebalances the region within geography and geographical thought.
