Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been described as the bible of muscle disease, from both a scientific and a clinical point of view. It is a comprehensive work that explains and illustrates in detail all pathological reactions of skeletal muscles that occur in human disease. The microscopic changes are illustrated by histochemistry, immunocytochemistry, resin histology, and electron microscopy. The pathological findings are correlated with the clinical picture whenever possible. The interpretation of the findings is scientifically based. To facilitate this process, the fundamentals of normal histology and biology of the muscle cell are also covered. The book has been thoroughly revised and expanded for this Second Edition to provide up-to-date coverage of the relevant molecular biology and molecular genetics, as well as extensive references. It has been well organized and richly illustrated by the authors, who have been at the forefront of muscle pathology and neuromuscular research for 35 years. This practical reference work is intended for neuropathologists, neurologists, and general pathologists who look at muscle biopsies. It will also serve as an introduction to muscle disease for neurology and pathology residents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this treatise is to summarize the current understanding of the mechanisms for blood flow control to skeletal muscle under resting conditions, how perfusion is elevated (exercise hyperemia) to meet the increased demand for oxygen and other substrates during exercise, mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of regular physical activity on cardiovascular health, the regulation of transcapillary fluid filtration and protein flux across the microvascular exchange vessels, and the role of changes in the skeletal muscle circulation in pathologic states. Skeletal muscle is unique among organs in that its blood flow can change over a remarkably large range. Compared to blood flow at rest, muscle blood flow can increase by more than 20-fold on average during intense exercise, while perfusion of certain individual white muscles or portions of those muscles can increase by as much as 80-fold. This is compared to maximal increases of 4- to 6-fold in the coronary circulation during exercise. These increases in muscle perfusion are required to meet the enormous demands for oxygen and nutrients by the active muscles. Because of its large mass and the fact that skeletal muscles receive 25% of the cardiac output at rest, sympathetically mediated vasoconstriction in vessels supplying this tissue allows central hemodynamic variables (e.g., blood pressure) to be spared during stresses such as hypovolemic shock. Sympathetic vasoconstriction in skeletal muscle in such pathologic conditions also effectively shunts blood flow away from muscles to tissues that are more sensitive to reductions in their blood supply that might otherwise occur. Again, because of its large mass and percentage of cardiac output directed to skeletal muscle, alterations in blood vessel structure and function with chronic disease (e.g., hypertension) contribute significantly to the pathology of such disorders. Alterations in skeletal muscle vascular resistance and/or in the exchange properties of this vascular bed also modify transcapillary fluid filtration and solute movement across the microvascular barrier to influence muscle function and contribute to disease pathology. Finally, it is clear that exercise training induces an adaptive transformation to a protected phenotype in the vasculature supplying skeletal muscle and other tissues to promote overall cardiovascular health. Table of Contents: Introduction / Anatomy of Skeletal Muscle and Its Vascular Supply / Regulation of Vascular Tone in Skeletal Muscle / Exercise Hyperemia and Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation During Muscular Activity / Microvascular Fluid and Solute Exchange in Skeletal Muscle / Skeletal Muscle Circulation in Aging and Disease States: Protective Effects of Exercise / References

Over the last few years, there have been considerable advances in this area, driven by clinical as well as technological developments. The authors are all internationally renowned experts in their field. They are also excellent teachers, and provide didactically outstanding chapters. The book is disease-oriented and covers all relevant imaging modalities, with particular emphasis on magnetic resonance imaging. Important aspects of pediatric imaging are also included. IDKD books are completely re-written every four years. As a result, they offer a comprehensive review of the state of the art in imaging. The book is clearly structured with learning objectives, abstracts, subheadings, tables and take-home points, supported by design elements to help readers easily navigate through the text. As an IDKD book, it is particularly valuable for general radiologists, radiology residents, and interventional radiologists who want to update their diagnostic knowledge, and for clinicians interested in imaging as it relates to their specialty.

Book excerpt: Silverberg's Principles and Practice of Surgical Pathology and Cytopathology is one of the most durable reference texts in pathology. Thoroughly revised and updated, this state-of-the-art new edition encompasses the entire fields of surgical pathology and cytopathology in a single source. Its practice-oriented format uniquely integrates these disciplines to present all the relevant features of a particular lesion, side by side. Over 4000 color images depict clinical features, morphological attributes, histochemical and immunohistochemical findings, and molecular characteristics of all lesions included. This edition features new highly experienced and academically accomplished editors, while chapters are written by the leading experts in the field (several new to this edition, bringing a fresh approach). Dr Steven Silverberg's practical approach to problem solving has been carefully preserved. Book excerpt: Museie biopsy is a long-established technique in clinical practice having been introduced by Duchenne in 1868 (Arch. Gen. Med. , 11, 5-179). However, the needle method used by Duchenne was not generally adopted, although Shank and Hoagland described a similar technique in 1943 (Science, 98, 592), and open muscle biopsy has for long been preferred in clinical practice, even with the advent of newer needle biopsy methods (Bergstrom, 1962, Scand. J. Clin. Lab. Invest. , 14, Suppl. 68, 1-110). The development of enzyme histochemical techniques has contributed greatly to knowledge of muscle pathology. More recently electron microscopy and immunocytochemistry have also been applied to clinical diagnosis of neuromuscular disease. This book is intended to serve as a practical guide in muscle pathology, particularly for histopathologists, and for those in training. As enzyme histochemistry has become more widely available, formalin-fixed methods have become less frequently used in muscle biopsy work. In this new edition of Muscle Biopsy Pathology we have taken account of the advances in classification and histological technique, and in knowledge of neuromuscular diseases, that have emerged since the first editionwas published in 1984. We hope that this book will continue to be used as a practical guide in the diagnosis and understanding of these disorders. 1. Introduction 1. 1 Generalfeatures of muscle The differentiation of musde into red and white types is a feature of all vertebrates and, indeed, of chordates.
