Book excerpt: In Bioarchaeology of the Florida Gulf Coast, Dale Hutchinson explores the role of human adaptation along the Gulf Coast of Florida and the influence of coastal foraging on several indigenous Florida populations. The Sarasota landmark known as Historic Spanish Point has captured the attention of historians and archaeologists for over 150 years. This picturesque location includes remnants of a prehistoric Indian village and a massive ancient burial mound-- known to archaeologists as the Palmer Site--that is one of the largest mortuary sites uncovered in the southeastern United States. Interpreting the Palmer population (numbering over 400 burials circa 800 A.D.) by analyzing such topics as health and diet, trauma, and demography, Hutchinson provides a unique view of a post-Archaic group of Indians who lived by hunting, collecting, and fishing rather than by agriculture. This book provides new data that support a general absence of agriculture among Florida Gulf Coast populations within the context of great similarities but also substantial differences in nutrition and health. Along the central and southern Florida Gulf Coast, multiple lines of evidence such as site architecture, settlement density and size, changes in ceramic technology, and the diversity of shell and stone tools suggest that this period was one of emerging social and political complexity accompanied by population growth. The comparisons between the Florida Gulf Coast and other coastal regions illuminate our understanding of coastal adaptation, while comparisons with interior populations further stimulate thoughts regarding the process of culture change during the agricultural era. The data suggest a dietary regime which included a summer use of coastal foods was in place as early as ca. 8000 BP and changed little over the next 5000 years. Despite the presence of large freshwater shell mounds, freshwater shellfish did not constitute a large portion of the annual diet which suggests the appearance of shell mounds during the Middle Archaic was not a result of a dietary shift. Furthermore, the presence of extra local individuals in these mounds suggests the mounds were not territorial markers for local groups of isolated hunter-gatherers; rather the mounds provided a place for contact between different groups in a wider network of socially connected groups.

Book excerpt: One of the primary goals in the discipline of anthropology is to explain the changes that accompany major transitions in human life. One very important transition that has occurred worldwide was the transition from a foraging existence where humans depended solely on wild food resources to an agricultural way of life with humans growing and manipulating certain staple crops. Changes that accompanied the shift to agriculture in the region of what is now the state of Alabama include increased sedentarism, increased social stratification, and poorer health and nutrition. As human groups adopted agriculture people also had to work harder to produce the food they needed to survive. This study looks to see if these changes affected the elderly in prehistoric Alabama in the same ways it affected the rest of the population. Two sites were chosen for this study. The Perry site in northwestern Alabama represents the pre-agricultural Archaic period and Moundville in west central Alabama represents the agricultural Mississippian period. Previous studies in Alabama have found a general increase in workload and trauma with the introduction of agriculture by looking at changes in osteoarthritis, bone strength and density, fractures, and dislocations, so it was expected that similar trends would be found in the oldest segment of these populations. Contrary to the results of previous studies, this study found that evidence of activity actually decreased among the elderly from the Archaic period to the Mississippian period in Alabama. This could be due to the small sample size available for this study, but if these results are in fact accurate, they reflect the excellent treatment of the elderly as reported in ethnohistoric accounts of the Southeast.
