It is an outstanding picture book from just before photography. Hiroshige travelled the Tokaido road to participate in an important procession in Kyoto in 1832 and published his 53 Stations of the Tokaido (Hoeido) which was the most popular print series ever made in Japan, see the authors ISBN ES 978-8-413-731-469. It was even more popular than Hokusais series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which had been recently published and which had influenced Hiroshige tremendously ISBN ES 978-8-411-744-935. The Famous Views from the Sixty-Odd Provinces contains some of Hiroshiges most beloved prints and he again uses the horizontal format he pioneered for landscape prints.

Book excerpt: “With a goal in mind of providing each of my children and grandchildren a little update on my life travels after the publishing of “60 Odd Years”, I have decided to provide a short synopsis of each year for the next few – to hand off to them when I am older; my further gift to them, of who I really am. This writing may be in cursive form, short notes, or perhaps there may be even a short video to describe the joys of living. I am not sure what the end result will look like, but it will be cool, no matter. I love to tell my story!” - The Writer in Me (Nancy Dupuis)

Book excerpt: Here is the first new book of poems in more than a decade from the author so well known for her thought-provoking science fiction novels. It is also the most autobiographical of Ursula K. Le Guin's five poetry collections, taking its inspiration from the wisdom and perspective that a woman attains in her sixties. Here she is at turns wry, playful, and sharply critical, with finely observed details of her day-to-day life and moving philosophical reflections on growing older.
Book Synopsis Hiroshige's Journey in the 60-odd Provinces by : Marije Jansen
Download or read book Hiroshige's Journey in the 60-odd Provinces written by Marije Jansen and published by Hotei Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) designed a series of seventy landscapes depicting the provinces of Japan between 1854 and 1856. It was the first in a number of sets from the highly productive years of his later life. The designs comprising "Famous Places in the 60-Odd Provinces (Rokuju yoshu meisho zue) are taken from all corners of Japan, thus representing an enormous innovation in the choice of subject matter. Large sets published before this had depicted the famous routes between Edo and Kyoto, the Tokaido and the Kisokaido, but Hiroshige had never before ventured beyond these well-known themes/ The Japanese countryside was already depicted in graphic art, but mostly in travelers' guidebooks and not as full color prints. With this set, Hiroshige brought the Japanese countryside closer to the urban population. It evidently met with high acclaim: the publisher Koshimuraya Heisuke produced a large number of impressions. In this study, the author Marije Jansen briefly discusses Hiroshige's life and the formal aspects of this series. Jansen takes as her point of departure the set in possession of the German collector Gerhard Pulverer, which is generally acknowledged to be a superb example of a first edition, and compares this series to a number of other sets in public and private collections. The detectable printing variations in each design are carefully analyzed, making this an indispensable tool for collectors.

Book Synopsis Inventing America's First Immigration Crisis by : Luke Ritter
Download or read book Inventing America's First Immigration Crisis written by Luke Ritter and published by Fordham University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why have Americans expressed concern about immigration at some times but not at others? In pursuit of an answer, this book examines America’s first nativist movement, which responded to the rapid influx of 4.2 million immigrants between 1840 and 1860 and culminated in the dramatic rise of the National American Party. As previous studies have focused on the coasts, historians have not yet completely explained why westerners joined the ranks of the National American, or “Know Nothing,” Party or why the nation’s bloodiest anti-immigrant riots erupted in western cities—namely Chicago, Cincinnati, Louisville, and St. Louis. In focusing on the antebellum West, Inventing America’s First Immigration Crisis illuminates the cultural, economic, and political issues that originally motivated American nativism and explains how it ultimately shaped the political relationship between church and state. In six detailed chapters, Ritter explains how unprecedented immigration from Europe and rapid westward expansion re-ignited fears of Catholicism as a corrosive force. He presents new research on the inner sanctums of the secretive Order of Know-Nothings and provides original data on immigration, crime, and poverty in the urban West. Ritter argues that the country’s first bout of political nativism actually renewed Americans’ commitment to church–state separation. Native-born Americans compelled Catholics and immigrants, who might have otherwise shared an affinity for monarchism, to accept American-style democracy. Catholics and immigrants forced Americans to adopt a more inclusive definition of religious freedom. This study offers valuable insight into the history of nativism in U.S. politics and sheds light on present-day concerns about immigration, particularly the role of anti-Islamic appeals in recent elections.
